Finally got a 6700k for this motherboard. This build has been nothing but hell.

This is my first intel build so i'm probably overthinking the problems at hand.

mobo - z170 classified
cpu - i7-6700k
memory -  G.SKILL Ripjaws 4 Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR4 3000 (PC4 24000) Model F4-3000C15Q-16GRK
gpu - asus 980 gtx strix - PCIe slot 2 since the provided EVGA shield covers slot 1???
ssd1 - samsung 850 pro - (boot drive)
ssd2 - intel 750 PCIe x4 card - PCIe slot 5
psu - corsair hx1000i

I'll leave out the win7 install adventures (half day of my life i'll never get back.. ya I tried the bios update and it still laughed at me). Currently I'm on a clean install of Win 10.

Now running into stability problems (WHEA_UNCORRECTABLE_ERROR BSODs). Google says this is probably incorrect cpu/memory settings. I had left all bios settings as default since I figured it would auto set them somewhat correctly. So I went back to verify them.

Looks like the default voltage was auto'ed to 1.175 - so  I manually overrode that to 1.2V
CPU was auto-ed to 4000MHz with a 100 BLCK - didn't see anything wrong with that. set it to manual anyways with those settings. Disabled VDROOP, CPU C-States, Turbo mode, and Speed Step.
Memory was auto to 2133Mhz and 1.25V. Way off. This G.Skill set says it should be 3000Mhz and 1.35V so I manually set that.

Stability issues fixed by bumping up vccio and vsa.

Intel 750 PCIe card not recognized/initializing when the memory is set to 3000Mhz now. The lights don't even bother to turn on when the memory is set to that. Bios doesn't even list it as plugged in. Weird. No idea what to try for that. Currently have memory set to 2933Mhz so it's functional for now.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Figured out the 750 problem. Apparently setting the memory to 3000Mhz causes the PCIe SSD to not initialize for some reason... I had to set my memory to 2900Mhz.

Currently running prime to see if my stability problems have cleared.

no your good i got ddr4-3200 and 32 gigs of it on mine. you need to enable xmp. you might need to set the voltage on the vccio and the system agent also called SA on some M/B. i would start at 1.20 and no more than 1.3. vccio and SA are the memory controller on the chip. all i had to do was enable xmp and it did those for me. but they were on auto for me

edit: i would also do memtest. Maybe you got unlucky and got a bad stick

The memory recommendations by the other forums members are worth trying as this should work.

What I want to address is your comment about the graphics card going into slot number 2. I've taken a good look at the pictures and since the rear of the card faces the North side of the motherboard you should be able to put a video card in the primary slot. It should not hit anything and if it is then I would like you to contact EVGA tech support.

I just checked with G.Skill. They said the ram should be compatible with this board. I'll definitely give the VCCIO and VSA settings a try. Sounds like that's the problem.

Also with Slot 1 it's the add-on dust shield (with the fancy evga logo) that you have to manually attach. It obstructs a card from being inserted into slot one. I had to remove it to get my video card to fit in Slot 1.

You're gonna have some fun figuring this one out. It could be the cpu/ram/mb.

I bumped up the vccio and vsa settings. So far no crashes tonight! Woot!

Gonna run prime 95 overnight and see what happens.

Only problem left now is that the Intel 750 PCIe card will not initialize if I set the memory to >=3000Mhz.

Glad I could help on the ram.

so your saying it did recognize the 750. have you attempted to move it to a different pcie slot? have you tried it in another M/B? what did you do to get it recognized in the first place?  also you could try to email or call tech support.

side note mine was a build from hell as well, i fell your pain.

It recognizes it fine when the memory is set below 3000 Mhz. If I set the memory to 3000Mhz or above the bios will act like nothing is in that slot. I've tried moving it to another slot as well. No change. Very weird.

For now I have the memory set to 2933 Mhz.

I had left it at 100. So I'm assuming it stays at 100 unless there's something else that would change it.

I'll definitely check that out tonight. Someone on the Intel forums alluded to the same thing.

Enabling xmp to goto 3000 probably adjusted the bclk speed. Adjusting the bclk makes everything on the system speed up. The extra speed from adjusting the bclk can make the ssd unstable.

Re: z170 classified (build from hell) 2015/09/16 16:51:24 (permalink)
Alright did some testing and couldn't find anything.

BCLK is set to 100 - when I change the memory to 3000 Mhz everything says it's still 100 (bios and the e-leet util)

I did verify that increasing the BCLK duplicates the issue. Any setting other than 100 this card will not get recognized (no lights light up on it). So something is changing that I can't control -or- it's a hardware limitation of some sort.

This x4 slot is fed from the PCH. There is two voltage options for PCH (1.0V and 1.8V). I tried bumping them a little bit but no change. Didn't push it too high since I don't know what's safe.

yea there's gotta be something else.

hardocp's review states the BCLK doesnt affect PCIe or DMI frequencies... which is probably why there's no ratio's to mess with in the bios.

yea the black I/O cover with the eVGA logo on it can't be used if you put a card in slot one.

it blocks the slot. definitely an oversight.

oh yea it's not installed on the board from the factory. it's held on by two mounting screws for the motherboard.

Hello, this is my first post in the forum. I would just like to say that you can have the IO shield and a GPU installed at the same time. It works for me and I have K|NGP|N GPU. I repeat, the IO shield does not block the first PCI-E slot. It must be an issue with your ASUS GPU.

Edit: My motherboard is EVGA Z170 Classified.

I'm sorry but my GPU is not blocked. So it is definitely a issue on your end. Either your GPU is too fat/too big or the IO shield got damaged at some point. Either way, my GPU fits fine in Slot 1 and it is a K|NGP|N and I know many others with the EVGA Z170 Classified that has no problems.

I have a z170 ftw and it blocks the first slot. The cover screws in right behind the slot and blocks it from coming out the back.
