So I'm going to do a new build with one of these motherboards for my son for Christmas. I am not familiar with the works of the x99 chipset so I would like to ask a few questions to help me decide what ram to chose. When using overclocked ram, how does the chipset overclock the ram, does it raise the bclk or what? If so,  what  bclk frequencies are any of you finding stable on the micro2? I plan on getting the 5820k for this build, EVGA 850 G2 psu, and will have a evga 780sc card. That is all I have made up my mind on so far. Gonna let him chose the storage devices.

With the ram, anything over 2800 mhz requires bclk 125 to be set. I have always used GSkill RipJaws 4 ddr4 memory. The RipJaws 5 memory is dual channel, which seems to make it a little cheaper. The RJ5 looks much much cleaner honestly. There hasn't been a huge difference between the two when it comes to true performance.

I also have corsair Dominator Platinum ddr4 and it is great as well.

For memory over clocking, you can simply set the xmp profile, and it will set everything up for you so you don't have to think about it. If it is over the base limit, it will change the bclk of course.

I can not comment on overclock in general for the board, but there are a lot of awesome users that will probably chime in relatively quick.

Thanks for the reply Scarlet-Tech. So can I assume that anything under 2800 requires no base clock adjustment? I have been thinking about this some more and have come to the conclusion that bclk frequency stability is more dependent on the the quality of cpu instead of motherboard you get if I am thinking right?

Yes.. Bclk seems to have a lot to do with the cpu mostly. Sometimes it could be a bios issue as well.

I really enjoy 2666 memory. I run all 3 of my memory sets at 2666, and they are fantastic. Both of my sets are 2400 rated and perform perfectly at 2666.

Ddr4 is a breeze to overclock. I suggest saving the extra money a higher frequency costs, and let him overclock it himself if he wants to get it faster later.

Hey! Thanks for the quick replies ST. Sounds like the x99 is going to be easier to work with than the x58. I am looking at this right now but still considering all options. Got some time to decide. http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-2666MHz-PC4-21300-Memory/dp/B00MPIE7KO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446751466&sr=8-1&keywords=CMK16GX4M4A2666C15

Anyone else want to chime in their ram frequencies, feel free to do so. This is part of the fun.... for me anyways.

Just make sure the ram you decide to go with has been certified by the EVGA engineers.  Granted some ram that does work with these boards aren't even listed yet.

If it is not on the list, we cannot guarantee it will work, but at the same time doesn't mean it will not.  Typically it just means that it has not been tested.  We will of course assist in getting your memory working if there is a problem.  The RAM I run on my X79 Dark is not on the list, however it is on G.Skills list for being compatible with the Dark board, so the memory QVL should be looked at as well.

Hi DaveB, how often do you all update the QVL for your boards? I've seen other brands post updates as they arrive, so I was curious.

Thanks for your post. I did pick the ram from that list and copy and paste in amazon search so I would be sure to get the right one. It seems I saw a while back that EVGA had some ram but I did not see it on the list.

Been working with x99 micro2 some today.
Just for anyone curious, When xmp profile is set to run 2400 mhz memory the multiplier changes to 38 on the 5930k giving a freq. of 3.8ghz showing in bios. HW monitor only shows 3.5 ghz for some reason. Have not tried the 2666 mhz profile yet to see if it bumps up 3 more multipliers.  My idle temp is 35c, that seems a little high to me? Anyone else got idle temp that high on micro2? Pretty cool in the room today. My x58 idles a 24C in the same room.

What cooler are you using, and which cpu? 35 may be a little warm, but load temps will be the major concern when it is at its hottest.

Was the 3.5ghz max under load or just the max it showed in cpu-z?

I wound up putting the h105 on it because of h100i using the usb header.  3.5 is as high as it went to when it clocked up from idle state. Here is my list....
Case has the side off of it now so system heat is not a issue.

Put the pc under load and see if it clocks up to 3.8ghz.

Monitor your temps with something like hwinfo64.

I'll do some more testing tomorrow and put something on that will work it some. Wonder if the led cpu readout reports socket temperature or core temp? Hw info reports 36-39c core temp on my x58 at idle.

The led readout reports the cpu package temp, as it couldn't pick a single core to read as the hottest since it is ever changing between them all.

That is incorrect.  The LED readout on the X99 MBs displays the socket temp.

When I have compared the cpu package temps with all monitoring software, it shows as matched to the motherboard readout. Since there is no cpu socket readout, one could consider that they may be the same thing.

But since only one is labeled, I have always called it the cpu package.

No worries.  It can get a bit confusing at times.  On the 3rd party software I used, I saw the core temps, CPU package temp and the socket temps but it had a different name that matched up with the LED display on the MB.  I also remembered a EVGA tech telling me over the phone to make sure what temp it was displaying as well.

Ok got it going again and all is good, real good. Were ran a few games with hwmonitor in background. Running @ 3.8ghz highest core temp was  39c. This is impressive. The x58 with a 960 running at 3.75ghz runs at 60-63c on same games. Hwmonitor also reports all cores reaching 3.791Ghz. All I can say now is get you one, this thing is a beast.
