Looks like a cpu cooler could hamper both sides.

- Don't think in a straight line regarding motherboard form factors or coolers and stuff. What mean is, this stuff was planned and isn't being dealt with right when we first hear about it. All companies research viability prior to building anything, they need ROI, they aren't going to waste millions and billions on a hunch. It doesn't matter if we don't get why companies do things.
- X79 doesn't equal "Patsburg", it is just a variant of it. Since one rumor mentioned that AMD would be delaying their consumer versions of Bulldozer for server, and that Intel would follow suite, then Intel would debut other "Patsburgs" in the meantime-- it is just that some rumorill journalists don't know anything else and call all Patsburg chipset boards with LGA2011 "X79" as if they are all the same thing.
They are not, like LGA1366, LGA2011 is a SERVER SOCKET with a single-socket version for high-end desktop users. It wasn't made just for us, its predecessor exists as a quad-channel DDR3 LGA1567 that held the 45nm 8-core Xeons and 32nm 10-core Xeons. FYI, X58 may have debuted with i7 900's, but one quarter later came to support Bloomfield (W3500) and Gulftown (W3600) Xeons. If these versions of sinlge-socket Xeons comes with X79 first/early, that doesn't automatically mean "Core i7 2800/2900" or whatever it will be called comes with it! This is why I strongly recommend details and to stop simplifying everything.

(just being the noob) lehpron do you think that IF these boards are released in august will there be CPU's for them? possibly only xeons but that's still something w/ the ram sockets the way that are, we have known about that for a while....companies are going to make new coolers and we are just gonna have to do a bit more searching for a compatible heatsink. plus the new design is actually beneficial, shorter traces mean slightly less complexity (maybe?) and hopefully faster throughput

@emperor... that's what I'm saying...how the heck do you release a board with no CPU available? Why even bother putting the boards out there of you got no way to utilize it. Might as well keep them in r&d awhile longer and debut closer together. So there's def got to be a chip about to hit for these boards.

emepror (just being the noob) lehpron do you think that IF these boards are released in august will there be CPU's for them? possibly only xeons but that's still something IF these boards appear, so will CPUs -- we just don't know which ones since not even i7's were unique to X58. If an X79 comes, it will only be the single-socket of LGA2011. If a variant comes in LGA13xx, it won't be called "X79" but will use a "Patsburg" chipset because it is just a southbridge. It will likely be named "X78" or "Z78" since that number isn't already taken (X79 followed by Z77). So the two Intel X79's are actually refering to two SKU's they are selling. Maybe different form factors or different number of additional PCIe chipsets like Hydra or "nF300". But they aren't two different sockets, that would confuse. This why I mentioned the straight line thinking gripe, some folks literally act like companies haven't thought things through when they announce intentions just because of the way and rate information comes to us. By the time we hear about it, they are in the beta stage, everything has been planned; Intel is simply waiting for AMD to do anything.

you think they may launch right after AMD in a kind of "ah ha look what we have" move? at this point both of the players are already building chips or are starting to now, i guess it could go that way or intel will wait

Intel has done the "ha ha look at this" thing to AMD at expos and trade shows in the past, but I don't know if they've done it with a physical launch.

I believe Intel knows more about the potential of AMD's Bulldozer that any rumor or anyone outside the company, including us. Ironic, you'd think the typical Intel fan would consider that Intel knows enough if they align their schedules to AMD despite their insistency that AMD either sits on their hands or doesn't compete... Potential in this case doesn't mean outperform, it just means it can affect their sales of their previous generation negatively, so they must debut something new to protect their bottomline. Intel uses a one-step-ahead strategy with AMD. It isn't that AMD is always behind.

I can see how it would seem weird if an X79 debuts while i7's don't, except if in fact Xeons that also work in X79 come instead -- but the rumor didn't include Xeons because enthusiasts don't generally care for the brandname. When board manufactures ship boards, they don't mean to retail near you, they mean by air or ship freight in the hundreds of thousands around the world to get ready for OEM/Retail that would be this winter -- yes it takes a long time, it has in the past.

False, it's coming August The CPUs called Zambezi that are part of the "Orochi" CPU Design and use the "Bulldozer" Core Design I believe the same with the Sandy Bridge-E Class CPUs they are coming Q3 2011, just like the AMD CPUs Beyond the lies spread by Xbit labs(they source donanimhaber a lot and plagiarize) Orochi vs Sandy Bridge-E in Q3 as expected

I read that article too, and remember the journalist wrote (I'm paraphrasing), 'there are no PCIe 3.0 cards to test'. But pretty much the next day another rumor claimed AMD's Radeon HD7000 will debut using PCIe 3.0. What does this tell you? Either someone made an assumption or we don't know the whole story. On one hand, just because the cards aren't in retail doesn't mean engineering samples don't exist for any possible use, so I'll bet Intel has access. But I'm not making conclusions about such tests, maybe it didn't work out in time, who knows. Or better still, we got to keep in mind that those who leak rumors, 1) don't have access to everything to give us the big picture and 2) they also get to choose what to leak when they do have more access. So how accurate do you think our idea of what's going on is? Everything is questionable, lol.
