Here's the thing I want to build a cheap rig for folding, my kids, & other things. So, I have been looking at the B-stock & I see these 2 mobo's that I think will be great for my needs the thing is 1 is a x58 & the other is a p55 I like them both but I can only get 1 & with my EVGA bucks I can get one for real cheap to, just need your "IMO" thank you guys! Here are the 2: EVGA X58 SLI LE - Intel X58/ICH10R Chipset
- Supports Intel Core i7 Processors
- Triple Channel DDR3
- 133MHz+ QPI
& EVGA P55 FTW - Intel P55 Chipset
- Supports Intel Socket 1156 Processors
- Dual Channel DDR3
- 133MHz+ QPI
Well I can get a i5 655k CPU Manuf. link & a P55 Classified 200 Manuf. Link for a steel so I'm going for it my Big "?" is will this Extended ATX mobo fit my Cooler Master storm sniper case It says up to a ATX but if there's a way I want to do it! Thank you!

Well I guess that really depends on how much you want to spend. It's $210 for a i5 760 on Newegg and almost another 100 to jump to an i7... and for some reason the 6xx series i5's are more expensive than that...

I would go w/ a $199 i7-950 from MC and a decent $200 X58 MB such as the X58 SLI, Asus Sabertooth, or Gigabyte X58A-UD3. Set that up with a 1gb 460 and 6gb kit of 1600MHz RAM. You would get great performance without the premium price tags associated with the high line models. If it's going to be for folding, you could put any extra cash into a better GPU.

The EVGA P55 FTW is a multi BIOS motherboard complete with three independent BIOS chips. 2 are soldered to the motherboard while the 3rd is removable for manual swapping and hot-flashes. This just might be overkill, but there is no such thing as overkill in the enthusiast arena. EVGA has everyone covered and wants them to feel safe while messing with their BIOS testing and tuning. ( Page three of the review below ) http://www.ninjalane.com/reviews/motherboards/evga_p55_ftw or Triple BIOS Another interesting feature EVGA has added to the P55 FTW is three BIOS chips. You can use this feature for a variety of different applications. Say for instance you want to setup different profiles for each BIOS. You could have one BIOS with the clock speeds you want for a mild OC (say for instance you need complete stability to run very CPU-intensive tasks like encoding and rendering), a second gaming-oriented BIOS that OCs the CPU even further, and a third tailored for low power consumption. You could also potentially use this feature to test out different BIOS’es without affecting your primary BIOS. A lot of enthusiasts like to tinker with different BIOS’es to see which gives them the highest stable OC, so this is helpful for them. Oh, and there’s also the added security of knowing you’ve got two backup BIOS’ always on tap just in case you experience a bad flash. To switch from one BIOS to the next, EVGA includes a 3-position BIOS selector switch on the bottom of the motherboard, just beneath the PCI slot. Simply push or pull the switch from BIOS 1, 2, or 3 to flip between BIOS’es. http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_p55_ftw_review/ Either case would be fine, I have two of each, I like the Haf-X best,

seabigbear I was looking at this one cause it's the cheapest Hyper-Threading Support CPU http://www.newegg.com/Pro...=N82E16819115221 Is Hyper-Threading an important thing for you? IMO HT is the least important CPU capability intel has. It's still nice to have, but I'd also like the AMD Hyper-Transport as much. Regardless, what's important is the Turbo-boost. Most important capability on an Intel processor. Just make sure TB is supported and you are golden.

[WildDog] IMHO you should get an AMD board and CPU Big +1 here Looks like the Phenom II 1090T can push more than a i7 930. http://techreport.com/articles.x/18799/13 *EDIT* You could put together an amazing machine just off the EVGA marketplace. I see a lot of very credible members on there selling stuff for cheap as hell. i7 920's going for 120 and X58's for 100... Some P55's as cheap as 75 dollars.

Bear, if you're looking to fold with a P55, I can totally help you out. I've had the fortune of being able to fold with an i3, i5, and an i7. These are some rough performance numbers of what you can expect. i3 @ 4ghz, -smp 4, -advmethods: ~3-4k PPD depending on WU i5 @ 3.8-4ghz, -smp 4, -advmethods: ~6-7k PPD depending on WU i7 @ 4ghz, -smp 7, -advmethods: ~10k PPD depending on WU i7 @ 4ghz, -smp 7, -bigadv : ~20-25k PPD depending on WU (the screenshot here shows lower because I'm running at 3.4 ghz because of the increasingly hot weather here) The best middle ground, IMO, would be the i5. Unless folding really means that much to you that you're willing to drop ~$300 for an i7, the i5 will still do an adequate enough job, and it's more than enough for gaming in any game today. Alternatively, you can spy on the EVGA Marketplace and hope that a great deal for an i7 comes through. I was able to get mine for just $160; a fantastic deal! As a reminder, you cannot run bigadv without an i7 at at least ~3.8ghz. The i3 has hyperthreading, yes, but it's still a rather weak CPU, even clocked up high. It cannot do bigadv, for it only has 2 cores, 4 threads. The same goes for the i5-6xx processors. The i5-7xx processors can't either, for they're only 4 core, 4 thread processors. You'll need to be dedicating at least 7 threads from an i7-8xx series processors in order to run bigadv and finish on time in order to collect the tasty bonus points. In regards to RAM, any 4GB kit of DDR3-1600 will do. 1600 just makes it much easier to overclock since you can use a BCLK of 200 and a RAM multiplier of 2:8. These here are all great kits for $50. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231193 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226176 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145339 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231427 Unless you're planning to fill up all 4 RAM bays, you don't need to worry about RAM height too much. On the P55, the slots are arranged like the following from the CPU area to the edge of the motherboard: 3-1-4-2; this means that you'll be using the further away RAM slots, and as such, if you're not using all 4 bays and you're not using some crazy heatsink like a Noctua D-14, then you can use RAM with high heatsinks for a little pizazz. Lastly, make sure to shop for a kit that will run at 1.65V and under. DDR3 for 780i and 790i boards may still be floating around (and for whatever AMD boards use this kind of high voltage RAM) and those use between 1.8V-2.1V. If you run that much DRAM voltage on a P55 board, you will fry your CPU. Don't be afraid if a kit is spec'd as "P67 Certified". You can use these kits just fine, for they only run with 1.5V on DRAM. In fact, I use an 8GB G.SKILL Ripjaws X kit that's P67 Certified, but runs perfectly fine on my setup. If you have any other questions, Bear, I'm here! (uber long post)
