The Power Fan header will work with pretty much any 3-pin fan.
It is tied to the motherboard's Voltage Regulator temp sensor, which monitors the PWM circuitry feeding power to the CPU. This temp is displayed as VREG Temperature on the PC Health Status page in the BIOS.
What this means is that if you enable Smart Fan in the BIOS for the Power Speed Control, Smart Fan will adjust the speed of the fan based on the Voltage Regulator temps specified.
It's located in the BIOS under
PC Health Status, then selecting
SmartFan Function and pressing Enter.
edit: Note, you don't have to use Smart Fan. If you want to use this header without Smart Fan autmoatically adjusting the speed based on the VREG temp, you can just specify a manual setting (for example, set it at 100% to have the fan running full speed all the time.)
If you have a seperate speed control knob for this fan, I'd recommend setting it at 100% in BIOS and using the speed control knob to adjust the speed.
Lots of combinations are possible.
Here's a picture showing the fan header placement on an X58 Classified for reference:
