Getting ready to add a second GTX 480.  What I need to know is what slot on the board to put the second one in, or does it matter?  The first 480 is in the slot nearest the CPU.

Difrent boards have difrent PCIe lay outs, On the 760 you skip a slot , on the 758 ( and some others ) they go side by side, and the 758 the first slot is all time 16X, on the 760 first slot is 16X as long as second is empty, third is 16X as long as bottom one is empty. ( 759 and 762 have NF200 chips to provide more 16X ) ; If for some rasion you can not get them in the right slots, due to cooling, or Bridge lingth, the 8x to 16X loss is only 2% 760 is same as 770.

Note : with two 480's you may want to look into the powerboost as well ( the 770 has an additional Molex so not needed )

Here is the diference with the 758

And here is a chatr 16X to 8X performance

Hope I have answered all your questions,

I just want to make sure I understand - in your top image then, I would use 1 and 3 correct?
Another quick question, can I use any of the SLI bridges, and if I use only the single SLI bridge, which SLI "plug" do I use?  I believe its the one closest to the backplate, but want to be sure.
I picked up the powerboost a little bit ago, but thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for the quick reply and help so far!

Everything you said above is correct, you can easly tell if it's the correct slot, it's labled 16/8X on the board, just beside the slot, the wrong ones just have 8X etched there.
