I don't think hydrogen is a viable replacement......not anytime soon anyway. I read somewhere that right now world hydrogen production capacity is less than 10% of where it would need to be to supply enough hydrogen if 10-15% of the worlds cars were run on hydrogen. We are talking hundreds of billions of dollars and years of infastructure investment before this becomes a reality. Full on electric or at least diesle electric hybrid is where things should go immediately. Electric makes sense since the infastructure is in place now. The suns rays are free, the wind can be harnessed, as can geo-thermal, and they are all green. Remember that 90%+ of today's hydrogen production comes from natural gas, coal, and oil. Only 4% comes from electrolysis.
Electric is more viable by far. Cheaper, cleaner, more efficient. Electric wins in every way and is far more sustainable.
Time to get rid of oil.

Well I read more into it and this is caused by unrest in Libya where they're trying to overthrow the government. Now the problem with this is that Libya only accounts for 2% of the world's oil production and they're still producing oil at about half the usual rate. So that's only a 1% loss. That is no justification for a 10% increase in gas prices.

Short-terms memories here, gas prices used to be near $5/gal at one time just 2yrs ago. It is no where near that high, it is not like the economy was any better then. I do not really complain about rises in gas prices simply because I see driving as a choice (not a need or a right) and therefore paying for gasoline is also a choice. Although looking for the lowest local price is also a choice. Still, $30 every three weeks isn't a big deal to me, it would have to double or triple to get on my nerves, but long before that I'll just drive less.

I do remember gas prices then and its part of the reason why I downsized to a compact car because I knew prices would go back up eventually. What makes me mad is that the cost to fill up my car DID almost double from one fill up to the next because of this crap. Last time I put gas in my car it cost $24 to fill it up, last night it cost me $40.

I agree it's not a right......but for me and many others it is a need.....along the same lines that my wanting to provide shelter and food for my family is a need. I'd gladly work within walking or bike riding distance if there was work, or take transit if it were possible......but it isn't, so I need to drive.

unfortunately lephron not everyone only needs approx 10 gal every couple of weeks
i would love a gas effiecient car but i couldnt even afford a car so was lucky my dad was getting rid of his v70 wagon its awd but gets decent milage for one and i drive to school cause i need to get there
other then driving theres no means to walk as its 25 mins by car
theres no trains to there
theres no buses
theres no cheap taxi service or subway
I cannot afford a new place it would cost to much to move
can you really tell me that driving is an option when its required by todays society to have a job or go to school?
im all for social reform to make this world more green enabling a better future but just cause i want it doesnt mean im gonna get it

I don't. I'm just out of college and feel like I do need a car to survive. I went to school in Arizona and because of the weather and no hills I was able to bike pretty much wherever I needed to. It would have been nice to have a car, but I got by and got rides when I needed them. Back here in Minnesota, you NEED a car to get anywhere and do anything, along with most of the rest of America. Our country was built around the automobile for the last century. Driving is still a privilege in terms of having a license and driving, but for most places in the US it's a necessity to get anywhere.

I get what you mean though; there are too many variables that lead us to our way of life and sometimes with limited options; our choices may not seem like choices. I just maintain the idea that we all make choices from where we live, work or play; that it adds up and can eventually makes us precieve limited option as need. Essentially we did this to ourselves and the only change potential is in teaching the next generation how to do better. We can't change easily, the economy isn't helpful in reducing commute (i.e. get a closer job), none of us have funds to suddenly move closer to work/school or get a better mileage vehicle. I recognize that. But I maintain that driving is a more convinient choice than anything else, that paying for gasoline can ultimately be reduced to a time versus money issue. Where I live it can take 12 minutes to drive somewhere that takes an hour to use a bus, mainly from waiting, more if I miss the bus(!). The cost of the fare is $2.25 versus $1.50 in gasoline for the same trip driving myself. But owning the car requires insurance and other maintenance fees, in the end taking the bus is cheaper yet impractical for longer trips. Hence personal vehicle and back to time versus money issue.

It cost me $80 to fill my tank and its only 55L  you guys come live in Australia for a while, $5-6 a gallon is common place and the distances between anywhere are huge. A lot of people i know drive 100Km + to go to work and back. I still pay around $100 a week even with 98% highway driving on a 35mpg V6 car.
My computers are liquid cooled while my vehicles are air cooled.

Pricing is currently around $3.39 per gallon. I see 12 MPG and drive approximately 30-35 miles per day. I am not going to lose any sleep over this though. It is what it is. These days I only drive when I have to, such as going to work. I otherwise stay home.

and if buses arent availble to you nor are trains? what then? sure i could take a train into new york city just to take one out to get me 1 hour walking distance of the nearest bus that would take me to school but then thats 3 hours and money just to get to school for some cars are a necessity not a choice

I know for me the choice is live in a nice house with a yard have just enough to live comfortably or live in the city and live in a dog box that costs just as much as my nice house and worry every day about how to make ends meet. I have to drive a 4 cylinder car to do that then that is what I have to do. But hydrogen would be more environmentally friendly and its made from water. An electric car needs batteries and batteries are hardly environmentally friendly when they die. What is happening to gas prices right now is nothing more than traders using excuses to drive prices through the roof. If you look back to the first Gulf War, gas prices peaked around $1.40/gal, and that was with oil rigs on fire across the region. Now if someone says "boo" in the Mid East, traders use it as an axcuse to artificially inflate the price of oil.

Seriously, cause gas in my area went from $2.95 a gallon two days ago to $3.39 a gallon today. 
That's nothing. I just filled up about 10 minutes ago. $4.07 a gallon. Sigh.

Yup, I am gonna have to de-tune my old cop car so it takes regular unleaded instead of premium....cost me almost $70 to fill it up last week.
After rising 19 cents a gallon in the past four weeks, prices could spike another 60 cents or more by May.. expect average prices to be around $4.05 by Memorial day with major metropolitan areas seeing $4.60 or higher.
