Hey there, i'm looking to figure out what the best cpu cooling system I can get for around 100 bucks, I decided against a water-cooled loop for the rig i'm building due to cost constraints (putting that money towards another 580 gpu).

If you guys have any other ideas on what is a good cooler i'd like to know, I only plan on pushing the i7 2600k to 4.0 ghz on air, maybe more if the temps are good, for when the classy evga board comes out.

Also, I saw Jacob got an 2500k to 5.0 or something crazy on air, what kinda cooler can do that?

Are the fans that come with the H70 any good? Microcenter was trying to sell me on

But i'm on a budget, 580s are expensive lol, gotta save where I can.

Here is a comparison test, the H70 did score better, but I would be willing to bet the Noctua is bit quiter....

I have my H70 running with two non-stock fans cooling a 965EE at 4.32Ghz while my idle is 28c while typing this, so yeah, I am happy with mine.

Gizmo: Asus MVF - i7-3770k - Corsair H100 - 32GB G.Skill 2133MHz - Radeon 7970
Two Kingston HyperX 120GB SSDs in R0 - Two 1TB WD Black in R0 - AX1200 - Thermaltake A71

Kids Rig: EVGA X58 Classified3 - i7 950 - Corsair H100 - 12GB G.Skill 1866MHz - Radeon 7970 - 240GB RevoDrivex2

May I ask what fans you are using?  Or a good fan set for the H70 that is around 10 to 20 each?

GOD NO. FOR the love of god dont spend that much on a fan LOL!

Get the H70 for sure as it will give better results depending on the fan you use. I would say make sure you have 2 fans for push/pull and if you dont like the temps as much as you think you would have buy 2 faster fans with a fan controller and adjust it that way.

Noctua NH-D14 if you want silence.  Thermalright Silver Arrow if you want the best.  This might help you choose your fans.

2 - San Ace 9G1212H4011's - 2850 RPM/88 CFM/40 DBA, 6.5278 mmH20 static pressure, actually found them in the same post BoredGunner linked to above, lots a good info there...and IIRC, they were around $15-18 each.

I only have a Megahalems and it is a P55 FTW.  However it is plenty with that shrouded Nidec VA450DC fan I've got on there (5300 RPM/220 CFM/64.8 DBA/21 mmH20).

What is the comparsion between that chip and a 965 EE, honestly I have no idea how the two compare thermally...or in any other way for that matter...

I use a H70 on a i7 2600k its great, can't really compare it to the Noctua though as I've never used one. I replaced the stock H70 fans and did so in favour of the Gentle Typhoon AP-15; so much quieter and better performance.

On idle I get circa 25 celsius on all 4 cores
At load, I get around 50-55 celsius on all 4 cores

Bearing in mind the CPU is overclocked @ 4.2GHz for everyday use.

You would get Equal Performance with an H50 as you would with an H70 as many reviews have shown. The only major differences in the H50/70 are the H70 has a Smaller waterblock, and the Waterlines are flexible(unlike the stationary water lines on the H50) And also the H50 is about 40 bucks cheaper.    Just My 2 cents of the overpriced H70. =)

Also H50 in Push/Pull config is awesome. =)

The plastic part on the H50 was bigger, not the block it self though. The H70 also has a bigger radiator. Idol, the H50 has lower temps, but once some strain is put on the processor, the H70 holds a lower temp, most likely because of the bigger radiator.

Here is a comparison:

The H70 is the best CPU cooler that I have ever used to date and I have built numerous systems for friends and colleagues.

I prefer the H70 vs. my Mega Shadow or my True Black mainly because I can only use one fan on the Mega since I'm filling all the DIMM slots with 16GB of RAM on my P67 rig.

My H50, with the same fans used on the H70, did not do as well.  It's not bad, but did not perform the same as the H70 in my little tests.

using the H70 with Gentle Typhoon push pull config, works like a charm and very easy to install, have had my chip up to 5.50 on the H70, running 5.0 daily, my idle temps are 35,32,34,34...load temps in vantage or gaming hit mid 60's, saw one core hit 82' during 20 linx runs at 5.00
