I used to do this as a job (I was still living at home, so it wasnt for a living :P) - pull 2x Cat5e or Cat6 wires to the bedrooms and living room, single lines to the kitchen/dining room. You will hate yourself later when you need 2x lines and you only pulled 1. Given that you are in Sacramento, having the hardware in the garage shouldnt be too bad temperature wise - the danger may end up being in the humidity and/or whatever you track in on your vehicles. The case looks fine, but I dont recommend that wall-mount cabinet. You will have depth issues. If you honestly cant do a small rack and bolt it into the concrete ( eg.), try getting a vertical mounted rack, similar to this. If you trust FleaBay, you can get some Cisco gear on the cheap. What you expect from the hardware in terms of what roles you want it to fulfill will dictate whether or not "server-grade" or a well-built enthusiast motherboard will suffice. ~Fus

Will pulling 1 line and having hooked up to a multi port, like a phone wall jack work without pulling 2 lines? Yeah Sacramento gets a little hot , i think max we hit is like 110, but never consistintly. Ok so thumbs down to cabinet, i kinda liked the lock and key on it. I looked for a smaller 3'-4' rack but kinda on the upside of prices, the ones you showed aren't too bad. Ok so MB will probably be a micro, hopefully i learn how to setup raid 0 and raid 1 by then :/

TBH with the way cat6 is priced anymore i would rather just run some of that, know your ready for anything upcoming. If you look at cisco small business switches i'm sure you will find something, maybe a bit more than you want to spend but the quality will be much much better than a d-link. Another brand of case i would recommend is a norco, i've never used a rosewill case. As for mobo, if its gonna be a home server i would def recommend something that can take ECC ram and use it, I don't think its made a difference but i would rather think its not doing anything and really is than not get it and be sad when stuff is corrupted.

wired is more consistant and give a better connection. Wireless will only be for my wife's laptop. my neightbors dont believe in internet. (maybe...maybe not.)

So I work in IT for a living; here's my 2 cents. The difference between server boards and desktop boards is usually chipset, multiprocessor (though you can find single socket server boards), and RAM orientation. For tiny 1U servers you can't have the ram in the same orientation as a desktop because it will block the air flow. With the 4U I don't think it will matter but for smaller cases you pretty much need a server board. 1) I agree that a vertical rack may save some space depending on your closet orientation 2) Definitely pull 2 cables to the bedroom. It's a trival cost if you're already pulling 1, and the wallplates aren't that much different in cost. Cat6 isn't much more expensive though if you're not doing it yourself make sure the guys test the cables. For distance runs you can mess up Cat6 to a degree if the pairs are untwisted by different amounts significantly (Don't know how to phrase that better). While you should probably run solid rather than stranded I don't know if you should go shielded or not. My building infrastructure is Cat5 unshielded. 3) What are you doing with your server? While I operate on the higher end of stuff, I will say that Rosewill case looks a lot like this case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129049&cm_re=antec_4u-_-11-129-049-_-Product If you're going for storage rather than internals you're going to need a larger case, but there are many other cases out there that can store more drives than what you've got, and they have easier access. Example, not necessarily recommendation (it's probably a bit expensive) http://www.supermicro.com/products/system/2U/6026/SYS-6026T-6RF_.cfm If you're going for processing power you can get smaller servers like 1Us. Also, Seagate just released 1TB 2.5" drives so you can put them in a smaller server if that's your prerogative.

If you want to run a cable that shields from disturbance and have all pairs insulated then use Cat 6. Keep in mind Ethernet has a max range of about 300 to 350 feet.....I have pulled cables to each room of the house and installed a single panel beside the cable drop. They all run back to an Office (which I will not move) where there is a 10 port patch panel to connect them together. From there I have a basic switch that connects them and provides access to everything else. I did it this way to provide a solid connection to devices like consoles, desktops and even laptops that are stationary (they are older and heavier). I have a dual band wireless N for newer devices that support N protocol as well as a guest network that runs on G. I wouldn't recommend keeping the equipment outdoors due to the elements and what humidity causes to these devices. From a FW point of view, unless you know how to configure Cisco devices, you more than likely don't need one unless you have special VPN requirements or just want to learn on Cisco devices. An ASA5505 is a great small device that can be setup or if you want to go old school, go to ebay and look for Pix 501's or 506(E) devices. They can't be upgraded but to a certain revision level but will be cheaper than the 5505. If you don't have anything top secret, a standard Cisco home brand device should work fine. Some of the newer devices support QOS and some even VLANs. Not sure why the need for a server unless you have your own home domain but an older desktop can fill that roll easily. There are home server options that user friendly that you can look into but these 1 or 2 U servers are really intended to run in data centers have which higher RPM fans and are meant to be kept cool (cold air in, hot air out) and rack mounted. Some of them can be very noisy.... Lots of ways to do this to incorporate wired and wireless to make everyone happy and not break the bank as well. Hope this helps!

make sure you terminate you cat5/6 correctly 1: check the cable to see what spec it was made to (568A or 568B) if it doesn't say strip the cable back and check the twist rate, for 568A the green should be the tightest twist and for 568B the orange should be tightest, it do's matter!!! 2: when terminating onto module's try to not loose to much twist and use the correct punch down tool, there are many different styles of idc connectors 3:for patch panels treat the same as modules and keep the twist as well as you can. 4: when running the cable do not strain the cable and keep bends gradual, tight turns increase resistance/heat/and destructs the twist rate of all 4 pairs and will course crosstalk good luck

Thanks for the reading material guys, I guess i really want the look more then productivity. What i really want is a pc to hold all my music, movies, and pictures and able to stream it to my blu ray player, ps3, and any other pc in the house. I want all to be wired. So i figured i could build up a budget home server. I doubt i would be running over 300ft if i can do attic drops. I still have to buy the house too lol so i really dont know whats first lol

d-rock, Congrats on the house. The only one I could recommend with confidence out of the ones you listed on Newegg would be the HP. I personally havent had much luck with Netgear and people I have talked to dont really like D-Link. I wasnt aware that LG-Ericsson made networking gear TBH, but it got really good reviews, so that one could go on the list too. Remember that you can never have too many ports - I see you have 16 ports as a search filter. See this switch too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833129021&cm_re=rackmount_switch-_-33-129-021-_-Product Ports go bad, you get more electronics, etc etc - having spare ports never hurts. ~Fus

i never thought a single port could go bad, i would figure the whole unit would go as a first thought. Also in the link you showed, it doesnt have cat 6 listed with the 1000mbps catageory 5. it still could manage it right? The only review on there is really in my ball park as in multimedia. this switch fits a rackmount of 3u correct?

Happens more often than you'd think, at least for me it does. If I'm not totally off-base, if Cat5e will work, so will Cat6. Dont worry about it. The body is 1U - it'll fit on a 3U rack. ~Fus

Also, i will be using cable internet and i want to pick up a cable modem instead of renting comcast's modem. im seeing that the highest transfer rate modem i cna find is only a 10/100base-t with 42D/10.2U rate. Is that normal?

The modems you are finding are DOCSIS 2.0 modems. Try putting 'DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem' into Google - I possibly found a few at Amazon for ~80$. ~Fus
