Welcome to the Forum, ashwin114. It is not your OS that is the problem....it is your RAM. Whatever OS you run, your RAM settings must be set right before you install it or you are going to have data corruption. You are trying to run RAM that was made for running on Core i5 and i7 MoBo's...and 8GB's of it too. Copied from the Features Section on them, "8GB memory kit (4 x 2GB) for use with Dual Channel DDR3 Intel Core i5 and Core i7 processors". http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145261&Tpk=CMX8GX3M4A1600C9 Some folks have been able to run this type of RAM with some serious tweaking but, most cannot. The RAM that does run really well on the 790i is very hard to find these days since it and the MoBo are past End-of-Life. You want to try and find RAM that runs at 1.7v-2.0v. People have been experiencing some pretty decent results with these: http://www.directron.com/pgs34g1600elk.html

You are most welcome. At the present time, those Patriots I linked would be your best bet, IMHO. However; if you do not have a REAL NEED for running 8GB's of RAM, I would suggest running only 4GB's (2x2). 4GB's is easier on the Memory Controller and easier to tune in and stabilize.

First of all....the OpSys you have installed has no effect upon whether the BIOS boots up properly to the settings applied. To answer your questions: (1) Yes, CPU N/2 ration should be Enabled. This is what gives your multiplier the .5 which is stock setting for your chip. (2) The stock frequency of your chip is 2.833.3GHz and FSB of 1333Mhz. It changed 3.4GHz because we overclocked your FSB to 1600MHz. (3) The Auto GTLVREF's auto-change accordingly with the FSB. Let's take a step back and start with the basics and see if it will boot properly to the BIOS. Please apply the following settings and try to reboot several times in a row right back to the BIOS. Do not load your OpSys yet. If it does give you a single BEEP each and every time you reboot then, copy/paste and post the below template with the (?) values filled in so I can see what the board assigns them. Thankx. OK...good deal. Please download the following files: MemTest86+ image file: http://memtest.org/download/4.20/memtest86+-4.20.iso.zip ImgBurn: http://www.softpedia.com/get/CD-DVD-Tools/Data-CD-DVD-Burning/ImgBurn.shtml Install and use the ImgBurn program to burn the MemTest .iso file to a CD at the SLOWEST speed possible. The CD will be bootable so, you can boot up to it and run the test for a minimum of 8hrs. You can exit the test at anytime by hitting the Escape key. This will determine if your stix are good or not. If they pass with no errors then, we can proceed on. If you get any errors then, one or both of your RAM stix could very well be bad and need to be returned.

I think it would be OK to just go ahead and run your first test with them both installed...if one or both of the stix are bad...you won't be able to complete even one full test pass.

That is good news, man. By all means, remove the 2 now known good stix and test the other pair ASAP in the same manner. Make sure that they do not get mixed up with the others. Mark them in some way so that you know which stix go together. You should not have to "reapply" the same settings...they should still be in effect until you change them.

the settings were different when i tested the RAM, you wanted to look at the default settings earlier, I tested with the same settings as below, after the test is complete for 8 hrs with no errors, i changed the settings back to your earlier recommendations and still im not able to get into the OS, i can get into the OS once but when i restart it doesnt load. Also ubuntu gives me a an option to memtest v4.10, the same RAM stix which passed with default settings as below failed (2nd pass) with modified Bios setting and memtest 4.10 that comes with ubuntu OS, Im kind of confused now, should I change RAM ? Please do not take this the wrong way, Man....I'm just trying to help, OK? I'm not trying to rude or overbearing. I do not want you making BIOS changes unless I ask you to do so. I did not instruct you to reapply the 1600MHz OC settings from post #6....those did not work so, I want you to forget them. I want you to stay with the above settings for now which, match the post #8-9 Template and actually work for you. We will try working our way up to a 1600MHz OC but, it is going to take some time and testing. I hope this is OK with you....if not, just say so.

Also forgot to add that the OS is 64 bit, hope that doesnt matter. -Ashwin

Kool.....have you tested the other pair of RAM stix in the black slots with the same settings that the first pair passed on?? If not, that is what I need you to do....need to get those initial tests out of the way to determine if all stix are good before worrying about whether you can get into OS or not. It would also be a good idea to create your Forum Signature listing all your system components including make/model numbers....kinda like what you did in post #1 but, add in the rest of your parts like PSU etc. There is a link button near the top of this page: User Control Panel>Edit Profile>Signature and Comments.

Good deal and thank you for doing that signature. Just run 1 pair for now at those same settings and let me know if you experience any problems getting into your OS or while running in it. If all is well after some testing, we'll see about OC'ing...OK??

☄ Helpful
Hey there Ashwin, To be honest; I have no experience with the Ubuntu OS but, from looking at your screenshot...it appears that either the drive it is installed on and/or the startup files are not being properly detected by the OS or the OS installation itself could be corrupted. If you installed the OS when your RAM was not properly functioning or when you were running on your old RAM...that could be the cause of this. I would suggest that you backup your important files and perform a clean install of the OS. Also, make sure that the OS drive is selected in the BIOS as the first boot device. Before you do any of this, please make the following changes to your BIOS settings. This is to ensure that they will always stay the same. CPU Core [Manually set] (1.20V) CPU FSB [Manually set] (1.1V) Memory [Manually set] (1.500V) nForce SPP [Manually set] (1.30V) nForce MCP [Manually set] (1.500V) As always...make sure that you select Save and Exit after making settings adjustments to the BIOS and immediately reboot right back to the BIOS to check and verify that the changes are effective and that they work for a successful BIOS boot.

Hi Jeff, I was not able to make a clean install of ubuntu, i tried to do it but there is no option to re-install over existing ubuntu one.So i installed windows 7 64bit, the installation went fine and was able to reboot without any problems with windows, and with the same bios settings as theRAM's passed.I guess the system is stable now with current settings, will wait for your next instructions on plugging in the other 4GB ram and OC settings. thanks! Hey there, Ashwin. Ok.....you'll still want to just stay with only the 2 stix of RAM yet. Please apply the below indicated settings changes and try to reboot directly back to the BIOS 3-4 times in a row (save and exit each time upon leaving the BIOS). If the boot is successful each time then, fill in the new Auto values on the template so I can see what they are. Make sure that you have your previous working settings written down in case you need to reapply them. **System ** CPU Freq, MHz:() GHZ () FSB Reference Clock, MHz: 1600 CPU Multiplier: [8.5X] ()MHz PCle x16-1 & 16-2, MHz: [100] PCle x16-3, MHz: [100] SPPc->MCP Ref Clock, MHz: [200] nForce SPP --> nForce MCP: [5X] nForce SPP c-- nForce MCP: [5X] **Spread Spectrum** CPU Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] HT Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] PCle Spread Spectrum(SPP): [Disabled] PCle Spread Spectrum(MCP): [Disabled] SATA Spread Spectrum: [Disabled] **FSB & Memorv Config** FSB -Memory Clock Mode [linked] FSB -Memory Ratio [synced] FSB (QDR), MHz [1600] Actual FSB (QDR), MHz [1600] MEM (DDR), MHz [1600] Actual MEM (DDR), MHz [1600] p1 [Auto] p1 [Auto] **Memory Timing Setting** [ Expert ] Manually set tCL ( CAS Latency) [9] tRCD [9] tRP [9] tRAS [24] Comamnd Per Clock (CMD) [2T] ** Advanced Memory Settings ** tRRD [Auto] (?) tRC [Auto] (?) tWR [Auto] (?) tWTR [Auto] (?) tFAW [Auto] (?) tREF [Manually set] (7.8uS) tRFC [Auto] (?) **System Voltages** CPU Core [Auto] (?)
