If you haven't updated the firmware on the Marvel controller do so now. Note: I've updated 03/07/11 to the current Firmware version to 1.0.0.1407 (direct dwnld CD method iso) & (direct dwnld floppy method .bin file) respectively in the links below. These are direct evga ftp links below and can be found in the driver download section. So please verify that you are downloading the current recommended files if you are unsure or finding this at some late date.
There is a SATA III/6G Firmware Update version 1701 found here for the following mainboards only: - EVGA CLASSIFIED SR-2
- EVGA x58 CLASSIFIED 3
- EVGA X58 FTW 3
- EVGA X58 SLI 3
Now back to the purpose of this tutorial. How to Install Marvel Drivers (1.0.0.1042) prior to Win7 installation The tutorial is for a new clean system I recommend using a blank unformatted and unpartitioned drive or Raid Array. Start your system go in to bios and make sure DVD drive as the first boot and HDD to second in the boot order. This is the default setting for most bios but be sure. For more info review my installation tips below. Start by downloading the Sata6 driver package 1.0.0.1042 Click Here . Then place the package on a thumb drive and make sure it's in a USB port prior to the next step or before you go to browse for the file. When you boot to the installation DVD wait til it comes to the point where you select the drive to install windows to. It's likely your drive if on the marvel controller will not be visible like in the image below (Fig1) at which point you can hit the click on "Drive options (Advanced)" Fig1 The resulting page should look like Fig2 below minus the drives listed. Remember your Marvel connected drive will not appear yet until we install the drivers. Next click on "Drive options Advanced (see Fig1) the resulting page shold look like Fig 2 . Next click on "Load drivers" and a browse dialog like Fig4 slide 3 will appear. Fig2 If you have placed the entire 1.0.0.1042 package on a thumb drive as mentioned above navigate to the folder as highlighted in the address bar of Fig3 then select the floppy 64 folder and click OK Fig3 slide 6 or second row down second from left. If you have a 32 bit system and OS make sure to choose the Floppy32 folder instead. Fig3 The next window you see after you have pointed to it will be a list of available drivers (see next to last slide below Fig4) Choose the driver for your OS, then click next and wait for the driver to load which will take you back to the screen (Fig1 or last slide below) but now your drive should appear. From there just click on the found drive to highlight it then click next the installation should resume by formatting, then partitioning, followed by installing Win 7. Follow prompts from there. Fig4 (to get a closer look right click and select view image then ctrl +mouse scroll to zoom) Installation & initial setup Tips Please follow the general rules for installing windows trouble free - use a minimum config
- 1-HDD( un-formatted)
- 1-optical drive (set as first boot and HDD second)
- 1-GPU (if SLI add 2nd after installing drivers for 1st)
- no overclock (check for proper defaults)
- have drivers ready on thumb drive or similar
- leave Ethernet unplugged
- load chipset drivers at first boot to desktop
- then GPU at next boot
- add latest software for any connected hardware
- add any additional hardware like the extra GPU or optical drive followed by adding there drivers/software
- now install Anti Virus from thumb drive or similar.
- shut down the system now it's safe to attach your Ethernet
- restart and activate windows first thing
- then Run Windows updates.
Good Luck with your Build & Enjoy!! FYI there are a few who have experienced issue using the current version 10xxxx Intel IRST software and was fixed by using the 9.xxx IRST instead. These include lost drives, cold boot and corrupted raid issues. Although the 10.xxx storage manager was designed for the P67 and H67 chipset boards they are supposed to work with all boards that include the ICH10R chip however sometimes it doesn't play well with x58 so if you experience issue try the older IRST if you need it. I've seen reported those who just use the windows drivers in lieu of the IRST without issue but it's unclear if that is advisable so you could try version 9.6.0.1014 found here edit: updated links

First off let me thank you for the heads up. I've rebuilt the links but believe the forum is going through some changes that is preventing the direct linking to FTP at the moment. Probably for security reasons mostly yours. However finding these and future drivers are easy. When logged in to the forums just go to the top middle left of any page and click on "Support" then the click pon the "Download Drivers and Bios" button which will navigate you to a page that looks like what you see below. Note the three item highlighted, those are the links you will need and the same I tried pointing to above. Best of Luck and if you run in to any trouble just let us know.

I don't have a need for this but it's a well thought out guide that should be stickied and a BR should be given to the OP. Well done!

Hmmm. I just built my rig in August, and using Windows 7 SP1 the Marvell Controller was recognized right off the bat b/c my SSD is connected to it - and my system installed to my SSD just fine. Perhaps because of SP1 Window s7 now has a default driver to recognize the Marvell SATA III 6G controller now? Mind you, I'm not saying the guide is obsolete or unnecessary, just that (maybe) you can avoid doing this if you hae a Win 7 SP1 install disc.

As you eluded to not all of us have SP1 disk or will take the time to slipstream it. Not sure what driver M$ is using but in the event a user doesn't want to use it and a updated version is desired the only way to install it is at windows installation. Even if the M$ driver is up to date now, eventually an update will come along a user may want to try. M$ is notorious for using outdated drivers but that's the nature of the beast. They make a run of SP1 disk and they sit on shelves for months even years so it's to be expected.

Sadly until they either refine the Marvel drivers or make all sata III 6g ports native to the Intel chipset (some z68 & x79 chipset) eliminating the need for a discrete chip (Marvel & J=Micron) controller your best bet, performance wise, even with a SataIII drive is to use the SataII native Intel ports. You will see better numbers there and faster boots with Marvel disabled.

So are you saying the most current Marvel drivers are included in the most current Mass storage Driver package like this one for Win 7/Vista x64 here and these packages integrate with rt7lite seamlessly but I don't see how a pre-installation marvel drivers to recognize the drive for partitioning by Windows can be avoided. Sure the marvel driver will be slipped in the the install routine for the windows environment but that's for after windows is installed right? or are you saying these add to the MS driver store Marvel drivers for the pre-installation environment. IN other words with that package slipped into the install iso windows will recognize a Sata II 6G drive for installation on it without having to F6 in the drivers (unattended) at install right?

Like nykyadav, I just did a reinstall of Windows (with SP1 slipstreamed), and I didn't need the F6 drivers to recognize and install the drive. The drive performance for my Force GT is actually quite good (hitting upper 450 MB/s read) for a system without a "true" SATA 6G port. However, one strange thing I noticed is that there's a listing in my Device Manager for a Marvell 91xx Config ATA Device, and it doesn't have a driver installed. I've read elsewhere that installing the Marvell driver reduces performance overall, and that you can install the MSACHI driver to get that performance back, but if Windows is saying neither are installed, should I try installing the Marvell stuff, or just leave it as is?

man, I'd love to hear the answer to DarkAngel's question... Did you leave it as is, or install the marvel driver? I'm getting a new i7 950 / x58 767 and a fresh copy of windows to load on a new crucial128 ssd, and wouldn't it be cool if I didn't need to use the marvel stuff and I could just let windows install msachi?

There is no known benefit that I know of to using the Microsoft AHCI drivers that I'm aware of but if you want to try this do so at your own risk. The AHCI driver is required to boot the system if used at install which augments the registry to be compliant for a good boot any changes done incorrectly may cause you not to boot. As long as you understand the risk make sure you backup before you give it a whirl. To Change the AHCI driver: - Go into device manager.
- find your ahci driver. it will probably be located under IDE ATA/Atapi controllers.
- Right click it and go to the drivers tab.
- Click on update drivers button. It will ask whether to look on the internet or on your computer. Choose look on your computer. Then choose 'let me pick the driver'.
- You will find your drivers here: C:/windows/system32/drivers/msahci. this should change the controller back to the windows controller for ahci.
- You will probably have to reboot When windows begins to load up, you should see a balloon saying windows is loading drivers. If you see that it will probably work. However You are now at the point of no return choose the msachi driver if you change your mind you will have the opportunity to push cancel and will have therefore done nothing, if you proceed you are now using the MSAHCI driver.

Thank you so much, owcraftsman, for the excellent information! Since will be a new build, on a new EVGA X58 SLI3 board with a new SSD as the C drive, my plan is to: 1) flash the bios, then 2) flash the marvel driver so the mobo would see my SSD to load windows7 onto it, then once windows is installed, 3) install chipset driver, raid manager, sound driver etc... But DarkAngel and nkyadav both seem to have skipped installing the marvel driver, perhaps because they also (like me) are doing a fresh install of Windows7 w/ SP1 which (maybe) makes it so you don't have to install marvel driver (which I've heard causes slower read/write speeds than msachi driver?).

Hello This topic explains in detail how to install the drivers when installing the system SATAIII and you m exactly say that you need to install because I have a folder flopy64 choice of two of the following names Marvell 91xx config mv91cons.inf device and the second is Sata6G Controller Marvell 91xx mv91xx.inf. If you need both in what order? Classified motherboard I have three and they are to it are also included driver CD Marvell as exe files. whether they also need to install if you have already installed the drivers during installation? And if you want to install these drivers before installing the system or you can just only use those that are included on the CD already in the installed system?

Just select the Floppy64 folder and click OK. Do not select an individual file within it. After clicking OK a list of drivers will present it self for you to choose from based on what OS you have. See the OP Fig4 next to last slide.I hope that helps. However it should be noted again this can be avoided using Windows7 with SP1 either slip streamed or whole W7 w/sp1 iso if you have that. Also, unfortunately, using the Intel Sata II ports will produce better performance even under the best of circumstances, that is to say, using W7 sp1 and F6ing the current Marvel floppy64 drivers pre-installation which can be forced. I recommend disabling the Marvel ports all together unless needed in which case I would use optical drives only there and that is based on the plethora of peeps who have tried it with no good results.
