I installed a second MSI Cyclone GTX 460 in the second 16x slot last night.  While running Furmark temps for the top card hit over 90c!  The lower card was about 30c less.  I swapped the cards and got the same results.  When I install just one card temps stay in the 50s while running Furmark.

Should I install the second card in the 8x slot for better cooling?  How much of a performance difference, if any, is there versus the dual 16x slots?  Do I need to change anything in the bios to use the 1st and 3rd slots?  I installed the second card in the third slot briefly last night. In Nvidia control panel it didn't show SLI as an option.  I was too tired so I gave up for the night.

I would install the second card in the 3rd/bottom slot for better cooling. Im getting read to SLI 480 SC's and am in the same boat, but i also got a GTS 450 for physx

I am going to try it tonight.  Is there anything special I have to do in the bios?

It must have been a fluke last night.  I reinstalled the second card in the lower 8x slot tonight.  When I went into Nvidia control panel I was able to configure the SLI setup this time.

I ran Furmark for a few minutes and now both cards are reaching the same temps.   I am going to run Furmark for at least a half hour to see high the temps hit.  After 5 minutes the temps were in the mid 60's.  I will run it longer when I get back home.  I don't want to leave it running while I'm not home just in case.

I am also going to run some benchmarks to see what the difference in performance is.

     3dmark06: 16x/16x-21625/21526/21556 16x/8x-21743/21698/21705

    Heaven: 16x/16x-1721/1722/1722 16x/8x-1722/1727/1724

    System specs: EVGA X58 758, i7 950, Kingston 1600 8-8-8-24, 2 Samsung F3 1tb in raid-0, 2 MSI Cyclone GTX 460 1gb in SLI. Stock speeds.

Basically the performance is the same in both 16x/16x and 16x/8x configurations.  Temps of course are much lower in 16x/8x.

I know mostly everyone here already knows this.  I am just trying to show my results with MSI Cyclone GTX 460s.  I thought the Cyclone's would handle being side by side because of the open cooler design.  Unfortunately that is not the case.  Luckily there is not a performance hit for using the lower 8x slot so that is what I am going to use.

strange you would get better results runnin x16/ x8 though. but what ever works. those are just benching numbers, real world performance, you will never see a difference what so ever.

I let Furmark run for about a half hour last night.  With all fans set to 100%, including the Cyclone's, temps for both cards stabilized at 57c.  That is about the same temperature I got when using only one card.  I am very happy with that.

The last thing I need to do is get a small fan for the Vreg and my system will be complete and ready to start overclocking.

You should get a fan that goes in the pci slot between the two video cards to suck all the warm are out.  Without it that air is just sitting between those two cards continuously getting hotter.

I have the 758 and I had to split the video cards so I would have solid temps.  My 480s got real hot and that was the only wat to pevent that.

I might do that down the road.  The 902 has a 120mm side intake fan blowing directly onto the two cards and there are two 120mm intake fans in the front.  The top and back case fans are exhausting air out the back.  Plus the power supply on the bottom is also exhausting.  Temps are fine for everything even when running P95 and Furmark at the same time.

My only concern right now is the Vreg.  While running p95 and Furmark at the same time the vreg will hit the mid 70s.  I know that is still safe but I plan on installing a small fan for it mainly to lower the idle temps.  After that I will see if anymore cooling is necessary as I start overclocking.  I don't plan on overclocking much at this point.  I will need to invest in a more powerful power supply if I overclock too much.  I am already drawing @650 watts from the outlet while running Furmark and P95 at the same time.  That equates to @520 watts at 80% effeciency that the pc is using.  My power supply is only rated for 620 watts so I don't want to push it too much further.  I can hear slight noises coming from the power supply when running P95 and Furmark together.  I know that nothing will push the pc to that level of stress under normal use but it is a good way to test 100% stability.
