From time to time my system will lock up in games (WoW, Civ V)

Hope someone can help me.  Suspect my setting may play a role.
Just flashed the BIOS to the latest from this forum P10.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have adjusted all settings to match the values you posted.

Now I'll download that memory test program I seen mentioned in another thread and see if I can figure out how that works.

Again, thanks for the help!

Make sure that you download the bootable CD version of Memtest.  If you want to stress test your PC, run the Intel Burn Test for 20 passes at max stress.  Keep an eye on your temps while you run the test.  http://www.softpedia.com/...t-Download-115298.html

Think I may have hit a heat issue.

1) Adjusted all setting to match post.
2)  started up... browsed around and download mem test.  bootable cd version
3)  burned cd  (10 min elapsed up to now)
4)  started up mem test  system shut down.

tried to restart.  wouldn't

waited about 2 min.  started up for a couple sec and shut down.
waited about 15 min.  started up long enough to load defaults.

Guessing.. over heated.

Questions:
Should I modify some of the settings you recommended?
How do I monitor temps during memtest?
I have everest.
My current temps are
motherboard 95 F
CPU     127 F
SPP 136 F
MCP  153 F
GPU 122 F
GPU1 memory 108 F
GPU1 GPU Ambient 109 F
GPU2 GPU 111 F
GPU2 memory 97 F
GPU2 Ambient 100 F
Drive 106 F

Cooling fans
GPU1 40%
GPU2 40%

Are those idle temps?  If so, most of your temps are fine, however, if 61C is your CPU idle temp that is high, and your MCP temp is high.  Are you using the stock cooler?  Additionally, you are using OCZ RAM, which quite a few folks have a problem with on the 790i chipset.

Truthfully I'm not sure if they are ideal temps or not.

I have a thermal take big water cooler.  For the CPU.  and quite a few fans in the case.  The water cooler never seemed to impressive to me.  I was thinking of changing to a Prolimatech Megahalems CPU Cooler and a different more dependable RAM.

Do you have any recommendations on either the RAM or cooler?

Ok.  You have two issues...high temps and shutting down, although I don't think the temps are high enough at idle to make your PC shut down.  Let's first address the temps.  I use to have the Thermaltake Big Water setup, and while it is not the best water cooling system out there, your CPU temp should be lower than 61C at idle if it is installed properly and working properly.  I would check the installation of the water block.  Make sure that you are using good thermal grease and the block is properly installed.  Make sure that your pump is indeed working, and there are no obstructions in the loop.  As far as the MCP/SPP, I would change the thermal grease on the motherboard heatsink, which is held on by screws through the bottom of the motherboard.  Are you using the small heatsink fan that came with the board?

After dinner I can take a look at the Bigwater and try to remount it.  Could swear it is right.  Perhaps it needs new grease.  It never seemed like very much fluid moved.  Wonder if it ever really worked.

As to the above.  I am not sure.  Can you show me a link of what this would look like?  I may actually not have one at all.  The case has a lot of fans on it.  It is a thermaltake speedo.  Perhaps its been screwed up all along cause I don't remember installing a MCP/SPP heatsink at all... but then again.  not knowing for sure what it looks like precludes me being certain.

Re:EVGA nForce 790i Ultra = Locks up in Games 2010/10/15 15:29:27 (permalink)
The motherboard heatsink is that long metal heatsink that runs along the side of the CPU and up past the PCIE slots with a high portion next to the CPU.  It covers the MOSFETS which are next to the CPU, and the Northbridge chip (SPP), which is located above the CPU , and the Southbridge chip (MCP) that is located by the PCIE slots.  The small fan that should have come with the board attaches to the tall portion of the heatsink on the video card side.  As far as the Big Water system, make sure that you have good liquid flow, that your radiator is not slightly clogged.  Shine a flashlight on the pump reservoir (I think it's tinted) and see if you see any "churn" (swirling /movement of fluid).  If you are using the Thermaltake fluid, it can become gunky over time, and turn kind of a greenish-brown.

OK some progress.  The water level was way too low.  I've added water and worked out all the air in the hoses.
CPU temp is now holding at 37 C - 38 C.  Big difference.

Also, I do not have the other fan.  Would you mind giving me a link to where I can buy one?

Back to family time.  Thanks for all your help!

Re:EVGA nForce 790i Ultra = Locks up in Games 2010/10/15 18:06:28 (permalink)
You can purchase a 40mm or 60mm fan from Newegg and zip tie it to the heatsink.  EVGA doesn't sell the fan separately.  You could give them a call and see if they have one they could ship you.  The number is (888) 880-3842.  You really need a fan on the NB/SB heatsink because you are running two GPU's which generate quite a bit of heat.  If it were me, I would also change the thermal grease on the heatsink.  The boards are notorious for not having good/enough thermal grease applied during assembly by the manufacturer.
Edit - Please try the settings in post #2 again.

Some major progress today with the help of my brother.
Took everything out.. and added fresh grease.  You were rigth.. the grease on the heat sinks were basically powder.
We cleaned and reapplied grease and remounted.  Also took the Bigwater out and flushed it.  The difference in water flow is amazing.
Also, went to BestBuy and bought a 80mm fan (only size they had) and zip tied it to blow down directly on the heat sink.

After all this was done we went to the BIOS and applied the recommended settings.  Temps did rise after these settings were applied... but voltages are higher so I guess that makes sense.

Here are my temps now, with the new settings.

    CPU 33 C
    SPP 60 C
    MCP 60 C
    GPU1 49C
    GPU1 Memory 41C
    GPU1 Ambient 41C
    GPU2 44 C
    GPU2 Memory 37C
    GPU2 Ambient 38

Both GPU at 40% fan speed.

This is all at idle..  Internet Explorer + Everest are the only apps running.

    Your thoughts?

Those are good temps.  I would try the heatsink fan blowing the opposite direction and see which way gives the lowest MCP/SPP temps.  By the way, did you replace or reapply  the thermal pads on the portion of the heatsink that covers the MOSFETS (beside the CPU)?

We couldn't find thermal pads at Best Buy.  I'll search for it on Newegg.  They looked undamaged.  I did not add grease to them.  Hope that was the right call.  It didn't look like they had grease before.  We will try flip flopping the fan and see if that changes anything.  Good advise.

It is perfectly fine to reinstall the ones that were already there as long as they were not torn or shredded.  They do not need thermal grease.  The important thing is to not run the board with no thermal pads at all on the MOSFETS.  Best Buy probably won't have Thermal Pads...you would have to get them on line, but since you reused the ones that you had, there is no need to get any.

Thermal pads are hard to find.  Sidewinder Computers have a pretty good selection.  http://search.store.yahoo...&query=thermal+pad
