...I have put together this list of my stable BIOS settings that I have achieved so far. This is not intended as an OC'ing Guide. It's purpose is to show what can be accomplished on the 790i MoBo when you have the proper RAM installed on it. I see many people posting their issues with this board and a great number of them are caused by trying to run improper RAM. Using the right RAM is the key to running with solid stability at whatever speed you desire.

This represents many hours of tuning and testing and I hope that it will help those of you that have a similar system. These are all done with my Q9650 Processor (using the stock 9x Mulltiplier) and 4Gb's (2x2) of my Patriot Viper Series Model # PVS34G1600LLK 1600MHz RAM installed in the black slots on my 790i Ultra MoBo. All listed settings have passed both MemTest86+ v4.10 and 20 passes at Max Stress on IBT v2.5. Since I am running on all air cooling, I have not ventured much higher yet. Any higher speeds that I will accomplish after winter gets here (ambient room temp. will be much cooler as I do not heat my computer room) will be added to the list. To save space, I have intentionally left out the settings sections of the BIOS Templates that do not change. HAPPY OC'ing EVERYONE!!!

EDIT: My Disclaimer: *Use good common sense and try these settings at your own risk*

I will be happy to answer any questions regarding these settings that you might have. As you can see, this RAM is very versitile when running 4GB's on a 790i board. Running 8GB's is a different story, as most of you already know. 1800MHz is "the sweet spot" on my board with the 8GB's and was extremely easy to do...just a few minor adjustments from the above 4GB settings was all it took. With 8GB's installed; I can only run them stable at 1333MHz, 1800MHz, 1828Mhz and 1900MHz.

Since the Patriot Viper "N" Series Modules (SLI Ready with the green heatspreaders) which were made specifically for the 790i boards are past EOL and extremely hard to find; if at all....these are a great alternative. They are basically the same modules with a different colored heatspreader and they do not have the EPP 2.0 (SLI Feature).

Thanks Jeffrey!
This is awesome and should help a lot of people out... including me. One question... is this all with a 9x multiplier? With my Q9450 is this possible or should I just stick with the 8X?

Thanks again for helping so many people!

Thank you very much, mantic. Yes, 9x multi and no, that is not possible for your CPU. You can go lower than your 8x but, not higher. This post is mostly centered around the RAM speeds and timings. You will have to play around with your CPU voltages.

EDIT: I'm guessing that those changes I suggested to you on your thread made a good improvement and passed the tests??

Thank you very much for your kind comments here, Mark!! AAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAA AAAA AAAA Boo Boo!!!

When your RAM comes in then, start a New Thread here in the nForce 7 Series MoBo Forum and we'll get your rig squared away. (Not that I wouldn't be willing to continue assisting you by PM...which I am happy to do)

This is awesome! it is EXACTLY what I've been scouring the net for, I have the same setup, right down to the patriot viper RAM :)

My system is running stock right now, I will be trying push it to 4.05ghz setting this evening. My only questions is about the voltages, on Intel's CPU specification chart is says the max voltage for the Q9650 is 1.3625V, but in your 4.225ghz profile you have 1.393 listed. Is this a concern?

Also, what revision of BIOS are you running this on? Thanks! I'll give you a heads up how it goes tonight :)

Welcome to the Forum, vi0lation and thank you for your comment.

Yes, your are correct about the max, safe voltage according to Intel Spex. The MoBo suffers from what is known as VDroop. With VDroop...what is set in the BIOS is not what actually gets applied to the chip....it is a lower amount. Not all boards droop the same exact amount either...some more, some less. You need to use a monitoring program within Windows to see what the applied voltage is.

For example, I'm currently running at the 4.113GHz 1828MHz settings with the Vcore set at 1.331v in the BIOS. CPU-z shows me that the actual applied voltage is 1.288v and under load, it drops down to 1.272v.

I am on the latest BIOS for my board which is vP09. EVGA's 790i Ultra boards have a vP10 BIOS but, XFX has not put one out.

I'll look forward to hearing your results. If you need assistance with your settings, please start a new thread in this Forum and list your detailed system spex and post a BIOS Template showing all of your current settings. Good Luck with your tuning.

Hi, interesting thread ya have here. I saw your last post earlier, & it got me thinking, why not try for the lowest voltages @ 3GHz, since I have the same issue of getting anything stable between 3GHz & 3.6GHz?  I had 3.6 yesterday for awhile, but it was just running too darn hot, & something wasn't quite right. So this evening I played around awhile, & got 1.25V CPU, 1.275V CPU FSB, 1.65V RAM (mine's the newer Corsair XMS3), 1.32V SPP, & 1.5V MCP. I also started playing around with the Intel Burn Test, & found it more reliable than OCCT, which I still like, and used it to check each voltage setting, so it took awhile. BTW, I'm using a Q6600 on the EVGA 790i FTW Digital board, so it's a bit different from yours. These are mostly the lowest voltages available, other than vcore & RAM, lol, so it'll be hard to improve, voltage-wise. ;) I suspect that wrap-around heatsink deal is my problem, I think individual heatsinks on everything would work better, & I'm planning to experiment with that very soon. Anyways, thanks for the motivation & insight, I'm folding on it now, & still haven't hit 50C.

It would be interesting to also see the VDroop voltage on each .I know with my QX9770 each step up in OC'ing increased it's Droop significantly

I could certainly add the VDrooped values next to the BIOS vcore settings. If I receive a few more requests for that info...I will.

You can see the drooped value on the 4.320GHz setting in the CPU-z Validation link I provided on that one. Vcore at 1.4v set in the BIOS comes out at 1.352v drooped.

Yeah.....I'm so happy that I did not buy a QX chip.....I can't believe how volt-hungry they all seem to be.

Excellent write up and thank you.  I had to replace my 780i FTW with a 790i FTW since they didn't have the 780i FTW available.  I purchased the suggested memory from Fry's.  It costed a little more than NewEgg, but I didn't want to wait 2-3 days on delivery.  I was able to OC the processor to 3.6Ghz with no problems.  Thanks again and +1.
