I recently received a 460 768mb as a gift and it's having some odd freezing issues. It randomly freezes when web browsing and it froze once about 30 seconds into a Fur Mark run. By freeze, I mean the screen locks up and the computer becomes unresponsive. When I restart the computer, often there is no picture / sometimes it freezes at the Gigabyte mobo logo before POST. When I log into Windows XP, during the black screen with the loading bar it flickers a bit. I don't know if that is significant. My computer setup is pretty crappy and I'm upgrading soon, but it was fine previously. If the computer crashes and I'm away for a few hours, when I return and reboot an nv infinite loop error displays in the event viewer -- otherwise no errors. I've also tried a few different drivers. My system is not overclocked. This 460 replaces an 8800GT that died on me. crappy system: e2180 2gb ddr2 800 500w antec earthwatts ga-p35-ds3l

What drivers are you currently running? It seems to me, that when your gpu downclocks when idle.. or exploring which is normal for that gpu, but during the downclock it causes your system to freeze, this may be due to your old hardwear, or the card its self, its a hard call. Try disabling the downclock in "manage 3d settings" by doing this it will not idle, but will consume more power. Also try re-installing your drivers, you can also remove 3d vision and nvidia sound drivers (by extracting the 3d vision and sound, and removing them, then running setup). Before you reinstall your drivers, use driver sweeper to confirm all your old drivers are gone. If all these fail.. call evga, and possibly RMA the card.

I forgot to add it did this today about 30 seconds into Furmark, but I'll try disabling that setting. Running 258.96. One thing to note that I just thought of is I tried that free BIOS update for the card that's stickied. I don't remember having the problem before I tried that. Coincidence probably? I also didn't know drivers could prevent a POST -- that's what I wasn't sure about. edit: I don't have that option under Manage 3d :/

Well prior to that update, if you experienced no issues then that must be the cause, i recommend you reinstall that update, completely clean your drivers.. DriverSweeper and test the new 260.63 beta drivers, and see how all works for you. 260.63 drivers You do not need 3d vision and sound drivers, so you can also do that as well. The power savings option thing is optional, i had an issue previously and that helped it, but now since the new drivers, i no longer have it.

I've also tried the 260.63 drivers with no luck :( I'll try Drive Sweeper.

^ try that.. completely remove all drivers, then reinstall. Also reinstall that 460 bios update, if it continues to cause issues, get the old bios if you can. You can call evga tomorrow about this, from what you have told me, something seems to be conflicting and causing you to crash, especially if it worked previously.

The thing about it working previously is that I only had it 8ish hours before I tried that update, so I'm not really sure. Just crashed again. Forgot to add that playing audio loops infinitely when this happens. My 8800GT died before I got this card and I am trying to remember if it had the same issue. Do you think this could be possibly PSU-related?

Originally i thought it could be psu related, but that psu is enough to run a gtx 460 fine, depending on how old it is, and how well its working its hard to say. I would get a friends card, and test it in your system if possible. The gtx 460 does consume more power then the 8800gt, 50w higher rating on spec sheet. There could be alot of reasons why its not working. The best thing to do is to try all of them to pinpoint the problem. The audoloops is not necessarily related to the audio driver, when anything crashes it loops the sound.

I'm now on an old Macbook because the crashes are starting to piss me off. Drive Sweeper didn't help. After the last crash, it booted all the way into Windows without my monitor receiving any signal -- black screen the last two times. The third time, it hung on the PCI listing boot screen, which it is now continuing to do. I noticed during the XP load screen when it flickers, a line in the background also flickers and two period-looking dots pop up about 3 inches from the XP logo. PC is now vacillating between booting with no video source and hanging at PCI listing, with no signal being more common. Can't get into Windows now.

Here is a picture of the weird dots overlayed on a normal XP load screen. Couldn't catch the flicker, it's too fast. http://i.imgur.com/kG9JX.jpg

On a whim, I downclocked it to what Newegg says are the card's default settings -- what it was prior to the "free BIOS update" and made it through some Furmark and OCCT. I read somewhere on that update thread that newer cards ship with the upgrade, but I never checked the card clocks before I applied it so I don't know if that's valid. Anyhow, going to leave my PC on overnight since it usually freezes when I'm AFK. If this turns out to fix this crashing, what does that say about this card? Shouldn't it be able to handle those increased clocks?

Saw that thread and had already tried it :( I really appreciate your guys' help. Scaling back the clocks that "free update" gave SEEMS to have helped. Is that bad?

I think its your crappy system causing the problems. Your PSU may-be going bad and may have fried your last card... I would try the card in another system or try another PSU in your system. Either way, your system is an insult to that card. You should be running at-least 4GBs Ram, and your CPU-chip needs to be upgraded or at-least OC'ed too around 2.8... Next, you should do a complete install of Windows and all programs (Not an image install, a complete fresh install) after you try the card in another PC or try another PSU in your current system...
Live long and learn how to fish... Asus P8P67 Pro Intel Core i5 2500K (3.3GHz / 4.8 OC'ed) Corsair XMS 16Gs Ram (1333MHz / 1600MHz OC'ed) 2 x EVGA GTX 570 2 x PSUs Antec 620 ECO (Single Rail) OS Quad boot (Linux, XP, Vista*, 7) (VT enabled Linux, XP) OS God Modification!
