I just replaced my CORSAIR TW3X2G1600C9DHXNV (2GB) with Patriot Viper 4GB (2 x 2GB)DDR3 1600(PC3 12800)PVS34G1600LLK that was highly recommended in the forums. I also added a EVGA 01G-P3-1373-AR GeForce GTX 460 with my 8800-GT running 2 secondary monitors, but I'll save those questions for the 400 series forum.

Could someone suggest bios settings for this RAM? I would like to fine tune it but not really overclock. I know I have the older bios, but it has been rock solid and I didn't want to rock the boat. I will update it if necessary.
The RAM is running stable with these settings:

The RAM timings and voltage should be set to the manufacture's specs.  Are your System Voltages set to "auto"?

+1 and if that is what your bios is set at then the system probably isn't stable.

Man, you really should "open the gate" and let your CPU and RAM "run wild". Do a mild OC of 1600MHz on your CPU so that you CAN run your RAM at it's rated spex of 1600MHz (Linked and Synced). You will enjoy the results very much and it will not harm your CPU. I'll be very happy to help you tweak it up.

You do not want to run your CPU at 1333MHz and RAM at 1600MHz. That will cause a CPU bottle-neck and you'll get memory errors. EDIT: Install your sticks in the black slots.

grrr,
just changed the ram to 1600 with cpu at 1333.
hyper-pi ran both cores to 32mb no errors, but nothing every breaks when you want it to.
I will change the CPU settings and post resutls.

Sorry,
had an error with hyper-pi so I changed some settings and ran memtest86 4.10. These setting passed and passed hyper-pi.

Also, what should PCI express max payload size be set to?

Thanks for the help!

You are quite welcome.

I think the default settings on those should be fine. Run your system as you normally do for awhile with these new settings and see how she does.

EDIT: Change your tREF to 7.8uS...sorry, I missed that the first time I looked at your template.

I also apologize for not answering your other questions on your template...here they are:

CPU Multiplier: [9.5X] <-current value greyed out
CPU N/2 Ratio: Enabled   <--- not sure what this is???  **  9.5 is the default multi. for your chip. If you disable the ratio, it will take you down to 9x multi.

CPU Core: [1.3] Auto<-- is this okay, the processor specs at 1.25v max? Actually, it is 1.3625v Max. Since the board has VDroop, it runs lower than what is set in the BIOS. As long as you stay out of the "RED" voltages...you have nothing to worry about hurting your CPU.

EDIT: Regarding your CPU core, FSB and MCP that are on Auto....please manually set those same voltages...1.3v,1.3v and 1.5v.

I made the changes you suggested. So far everything is running cool and stable.
Thanks again for your help. Now I have to get the GTX 460 tweaked out ;)

Very good news....you are most welcome. Post back here if you have further MoBo issues or if you would like to go for a higher OC...say 1800MHz....that should also be easy to accomplish for you.

Re:790i RAM upgrade - help fine tuning please 2010/10/07 18:04:00 (permalink)
I'm back!!!
I kept having random BSD crashes. I had upgraded my RAM, video, and had a lot of game and system updates as well so I didn't know which was the problem. So after about 5 BSD's in a row while trying to play a match in a Counter Strike Source tourny I raged, formatted and reloaded Windows. I upgraded first to the P09 and then to the P10 bios. I had reset all my bios settings to the last stable revision posted here. I ran memtest86 v4.2 overnight and all day while at work. In 92 passes I had 7 errors, in different test. I read that this may not mean the memory is bad, that it could be other components or CPU undervoltage. I changed back to 1T timing and memtest has passed 3 passes with no errors. I then ran Intel burn test 2.5 at max level and it crashed (BSD) before returning any results and the log file was empty. I changed the setting to standard and was able to run long enough for 1 result before BSD. I have not loaded any 3rd party drivers in Windows yet. Should I install the EVGA board drivers (storage and nic) and the video drivers? I didn't thing this would affect the burn test, if anything it would eliminate the possibility of the drivers causing the problem.
PLEASE HELP. THIS IS MY GAMING RIG!!!!!
I would love to make the overclock work, buy stability is a must.
TIA for any advise.

RAM is installed in the black slots...correct? I think you should go back to the 2T setting on the RAM. SPP to 1.45v and MCP to 1.55v.

And I think the biggest cause of your BSOD's is too low of CPU Core voltage. You're at 1.3v now...run IBT again with the above changes and if that doesn't pass then, start taking CPU Core up one setting higher at a time until it will pass IBT.

EDIT: You may want to follow the testing proceedures that I have outlined here: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=602447

I do not know how I can make what I said any more clearer...."start taking CPU Core up one setting higher at a time." Test each one...if the next highest setting on the list fails IBT then, go back into the BIOS and go up to the next one....test it...keep doing that until it passes.....stay out of the RED colored voltages.
