Hi All,

Could someone please clarify the followings:

1. Does the E758-A1 support setting the CPU multiplier to 21x manually?  If so, how can this be done?  Would the 21x multiplier be applied to all 4 cores?

a. With the multiplier set to 21x, would this then effectively disable Turbo Mode?  Or Turbo Mode can still be utilized and automatically increases the CPU multiplier to 22x?

2. Does the E758-A1 suffer from the Turbo Mode throttling down issue?  If so, how can this be disabled?

TIA,

that is gonna be a no. the Multiplier max for the 920 is 20x.

the only way to get 21x is with turbo on. and it some cases the 1st core will go to 22X with certain single threaded applications.

and the E758-A1 or any other EVGA X58 only throttles down when" Intel Speedstep"(power saving feature) is enabled or your CPU temp goes above 90C (safety feature)

So to enable 21x multiplier for all 4 cores of the i7 920 all the time without Turbo throttling, set the E758-A1 BIOS to the followings:

    1. CPU Clock Ratio = 20x
    2. Intel SpeedStep = Disabled (to disable Turbo throttling)
    3. Turbo Mode Function = Enabled (to enable 21x multiplier)

    Thanks,

that is correct. and keep your temps below 90C.

    have fun with that chip.

    Thank you!

It's good to know that on this board, the Turbo Mode is not depended on EIST being enabled.

I read the EVGA x58 Overclocking Guide and noticed this:
    EVGATech_JacobF
    • Enable "Turbo Mode Function" (this will give me a 21x multiplier in some cases!)

I replied to that thread, but want to mention here as well just to make sure because the "some cases" is not what I'm looking for.

    Please pardon the broken record:

Can the E758-A1 support i7 920 at 21x "permanently"?  By "permanently" I mean the board can run 21x for all 4 cores all the time, regardless of TDP.  It is as if you manually set the CPU Clock Ratio to 21x.  If so, what are the BIOS settings?

    Thanks,

I'm wondering the exact same thing. I'm at 4.0GHZ with a 21 multiplier. However with out turbo it puts me at 3.8GHZ with a 20 multiplier. This is where I'm a bit confused. CPU-Z says it runs at 4.0GHZ, but is it always at 4.0 or is it truly at 3.8? According to 3dmark vantage it was running at 3.8.

So I'm confused, is it 4.0 only in certain circumstances and truly 3.8?

The only motherboards that are able to force the 21x multiplier on i7 920's are Asus motherboards. To my knowledge anyways, I don't think Gigabyte or MSi's can.

When running Turbo On you must have the CPU multiplier set to 20x for the i7 920 first. When it is enabled it will bump you to 21x multiplier which is good for overclocking.  When it shows you at 3.8Ghz is because turbo is disabled which makes sense as it brings the multiplier down. For instance I have a BCLK of 200 and with Turbo Enabled puts me at 4200Mhz but if I turn off Turbo I must subtract 1x which puts me at 20x200=4000Mhz. If you want to run Turbo off just raise your BCLK to 200x20 for your 4.0Ghz or leave it at 190x21 depending which way you want to get there. When I boot my boot screen shows a 20x200 which is what the CPU is at without Turbo but when I get into windows and run programs or E-Leet it shows the actual clock speed with Turbo running.
