Thought I'd break out of my multi-build log; for individual build's, as they come to completion. Here is one of the build's; which I have decided to name, "DHCP Blue Box." Once I have my hard drives, ( 2 WD Caviar Black 640GB drives; which should arrive on Monday); I'll be installing Ubuntu Server 10.04 "Lucid Linx," and configuring it as a DHCP server for my home network. There will be a total of approximately six computer's connected to it; including my own, and excluding the later addition of an XBox 360. The intent is to have this system, handle all of these connections; and be available for use as a back-up server using Samba. This is one of the reasons, I have gone to some expense; to make sure all the components have high bandwidth available to them. I will post some pic's of the build now; and add pic's later, of it up and running as a server. The chassis fans, due to certain limitations of the design; will be used in a cyclonic configuration, with exhaust through the PSU, and intake through the HDD bay. The 120mm fan on the left will act as a push fan, directed at the motherboard; while the right 120mm fan will act as a pull fan, drawing air from the open side of the tray, beside the network card. Air from the HDD bay intake should flow down, towards the right 120mm pull fan; and the airflow from the left 120mm should be pulled up through the PSU fan. To limit air intake from various ventilation holes; I will be silicone gluing in more breathable mesh; onto the unused PCI bracket ventilation, and the ventilation area above the motherboard I/O panel. This should help to increase the cyclonic action; while reducing some of the potential dust in the case. edit: Have decided to install Win 7 Pro 64-bit on this system, and use it is an HTPC, netsurfing PC; with it as the primary PC in my home network. I may later see if I can configure ICS through it; and use it as the primary router, using Windows. It will require a bit of network modification, of course; but, it should be relatively easy to accomplish, when/if I decide to do this. /edit. Most recent shipment, which allowed me; to finally get near completion on this build. The V351I chassis, out of the box These are the not-so-silent pin's that came with the chassis; for the 5.25" drive mounting. I only used them on the left side; as it is inaccessable, for thumb screws. Chassis fans switched out for Gelid Solutions; thermall Controlled silent fans. Pic of the front of the chassis, and a little mod I did with a bit of silicon and some filter inserts from my CM 690's 5.25" bay covers. Side pic, showing sleeved FP Connector, and Gigabit CT Desktop Adapter Fitting the 5.25" Drive into place The newly mounted AT3IONT-I; on the new motherboard tray. After making all connection's; and completing this part of the assembly. Stuffing the remaining PSU connector's, and a large majority of the 24-pin connector cabling; up into the space behind the power supply.

Just finished adding in the modifications; I discussed in my previous post. I've also added some mini heat sinks to a few spots; to potentially offset damage caused by heavier usage. Aside from the one on the Gigabit CT Adapter's chip; I doubt any of the others, will prove very effective. I put them in anyway Back of the chassis, showing the new mesh inside the PCI brackets; and the mesh I placed over the 80mm fan intake. The inside mesh over the I/O plate; isn't really visible here. One of my Heatsinks up front, and a nice look at the RAM. The mesh installed; no more easy airflow there The Thermal sensor from the 120mm push fan; which is plugged into the CPU fan header; the other 120mm being plugged into the power fan header.

Thanks.. it's taken awhile, with shipping and all; but, I'm glad to have it this far along. The chassis really does look good. I should have the drives and be installing the OS tomorrow or the next day; then I'll have a chance to see how well it really performs. This is completely new to me, (the mini-build, and the server set up); and I'm not sure how its going to handle it

Having a few problems with my HDD's; noise and heavy vibration, during OS install. Not entirely sure atm; but it may be the result of incompatibility in the software RAID configuration. ..had a few errors when I was trying to set it up, originally; and apparently, erasing it--to start over--actually did nothing. I am in the process of erasing one HDD now; through the setup, without any noise, and with minimal vibration. I'll do the same with the other in a bit; and see if it has the same result. Will update with results..

I have, to some degree, resolved the issue with my HDD's, thankfully; and now have an operational ubuntu server, up and ready to go. I have not yet connected it to the network, or done any other "server" stuff; but, I am happy to say, that will be in the works over the next week. I am currently waiting on some few hundred feet of Cat6; with which to make network cables. Once I have that in, I'll be doing a bit of network setup; then making some effort to configure the server. Till then, I'll be experimenting with it a bit; and, mostly, reading up on ubuntu linux server operation and commands. There is no GUI!! ..at least, none that I've found

Just a little update.. I was having issues with my drives and ubuntu; as some of you may already know. These have been resolved.. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ..I installed Windows 7 Pro So.. just a few pic's, of my HDD fan modification; that I needed to do, to get proper cable placement. ..no crunching now .

Awesome build! I have been thinking of using Gelid's fans for my next build. Either them or Noctua.

Okay.. looks like things with this system; may have had a turn around of sorts. I'm happy to say, that everything seems to be working; as of roughly 15m ago. The reason: Unbelievably, after spending a week messing around with this frakin' build; I discovered today, that the SATA cables that came with the mobo, are quite, absolutely crap ..and, I don't mean that in a good way Moral of the story: Don't use the purplish-red SATA Cables. ASUS packed this thing; with the cheapest quality SATA connector's they could find. I went through days of operating system issues, and boot problems; only, to buy a new Seagate 500GB HDD, get a system that couldn't identify the new drive, or find the DVD ROM. So, I pull it apart for the enth time, and look at it intently for a minute; then decide to swap out the DVD drive, and the SATA cables. I really didn't like the sound from the "Silent Play" LG, or the way the SATA connectors fit. Pop it back together, and enter Setup; to find the drives are showing, and everything seems okay. Boot up the Linux Mint 8 Disk, and enter the 'Showcase' operating system; after a moment of puzzlement, (realizing it is what it is; and has an Install executable), I double click, and WHAM!! ..it works ..so far. I've also reseated the Heatsink; and TIM'd it up with IC Diamond. Now, it's just a matter of a few days of testing; and, I should know if it's good-to-go!!

Thanks notfordman. rachet45, I'm using just the base Ion GPU and Atom 330 processor; that come with the AT3IONT-I motherboard. They're embedded, so there's no way around that; though, I would have preferred a board with a better Atom processor, like the 510. I suppose that's up to speculation; but, I am seeing lag, and buggy windows with the recent update. The D510, is designed for better data processing; where the 330, is intended for media processing. I still have yet to play a DVD video on this thing however; presumeably, because the copy protection is kicking in. Just drops out, as soon as I try to play it; and I haven't bothered to test another one yet. I might have to run Wine, and install Cyberlink DVD, to get it to work; as Linux dev's won't use the decoder's, due to legal complications. Learn something new everyday, I suppose edit: So, I can watch DVD's now; and without installing Wine. Turns out, you just have to find out what is missing from the install; and use the package manager to search that particular package, and install it. Works great now; or, it plays the first 30s of the DVD ..wasn't interested in watching it again; just in verifying that it works, and it does. Well that was fun.. now I just have to figure out how to add real programs; to my Mac OS X style program/applet dock. All I have, is Volume Control and Weather; which leaves a lot out, at the moment. I'd like to, at least; move Mumble and Firefox on there.
