OK so I have searched and searched the internet for how to set up a gpu sys tray folding client and smp2 client (aka -advmethods) on my SSD system well there is no guide and most people don't have a clue at any forums i have visited so here it is tested by me and working great.
Why do you need this guide? If you got SSD drives the life of them can be reduced with more read and writes as well as performance, which is very common in
folding@home. I have even found folders who stopped folding because they have ssd drives. first you need atleast a second drive that is platter or the common hard drive HDD.
So lets start with adding a second NO SSD drive to your system.
now create a folder on this drive (I used folding drive letter is F:)
you will need to download the gpu sys tray client here:
http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=14671 I am useing the new beta drivers for the 400 series card as it allows you to fold with no dummy plugs
now install it, after it starts and is working, right click on the tray icon and click quit to shut it down.
C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming, and locate the
Folding@home-gpu folder. Right click on the folder, and select copy.
Now Paste the folder into the Roaming directory two times, and name them, leaving the first as
folding@home-gpu Folding@home-gpu-2 and
Folding@home-gpu-3 for the second and third clients.
Now cut and paste these folders into the folder you made called folding on a different drive (a standard hdd, drive F: for me).
go back and delete the folder in C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\folding@home-gpu
make sure to enable show hidden folders to see these.
Go into both of the new folders
Folding@home-gpu-2, and
Folding@homegpu-3, and delete the following files:
unitinfo, queue.dat, FAHlog, client, and the entire Work folder. Piont Explorer to C:\Program files (X86)\Folding@home\
Folding@home-gpu, and right click on
Folding@home.exe, and select create a shortcut, now cut and paste to your Desktop. Repeat to make a total of 3 shortcuts for 3 cards folding.
Name the new shortcut
Folding @home-1 Click on the exact same
Folding@home.exe file in the same folder, and make a second shortcut. Name the new shortcut
Folding @home-2 Click on the exact same
Folding@home.exe file in the same folder, and make a third shortcut. Name the new shortcut
Folding @home-3 start in: is the important factor here use the drive and folder path you created on regular HDD I use drive F: Right click on the
Folding @home-1 icon, and click properties, and set the:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe" -gpu 0
Start in: F:\folding\Folding@home-gpu\
Right click on the
Folding @home-2 icon, and set it's properties to run as Administrator, and set the:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe" -gpu 1
Start in:F:\folding\Folding@home-gpu-gpu-2
Right click on the
Folding @home-3 icon, and set it's properties to run as Administrator, and set the:
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Folding@home\Folding@home-gpu\Folding@home.exe" -gpu 2
Start in: F:\folding\Folding@home-gpu-3
In Nvidia Control Panel set disable SLI, and in 3D settings set cuda all When each new instance of GPU Folding starts, there is only a few things we select. When the
Folding@Home Control Panel appears, you will be on the
User tab. Enter your
Folding Name in the User name field, and
111065 in the Team number field.
Next click the
Connection tab.
Select the box to Allow recept of work assignments and return of results greater than 10MB in size.
Next click the
Advanced tab. Select Core Priority. se to
Slightly higher Also, check the box next to:
'Do NOT lock cores to specific CPU'.
Ensure you give all 3 instances a
unique machine ID number NOW for SMP2 aka -advmethods go here
[link=http://folding.stanford.edu/English/DownloadWinOther]http://folding.stanford.e..nglish/DownloadWinOther[/link]
and download 6.29 beta for MPICH
in vista and windows 7 turn UAC off. Set your pc up to have a user name and password to login to windows.
get a folding at home passkey from stanford here:
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py Install the SMP client.
install this to the new folding folder on a standard hard drive location
F:\folding\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01
NOW
look for a file called install.bat. double click and Run that. be sure to enter your windows user name and log in pasword into the client it will not show your password so be careful what you type.
Make a shortcut of the
folding@home-win32-x86.exe file on your dektop. right click the shortcut click properties. @ the end of the Target path add a space and -smp
IMPORTANT! in the start in field change it to "F:\folding\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01"
enter the information into the client such as user name, team number, passkey, file size big, change adv options yes, set -advmethods flag yes. the rest is all default settings. red check marks is what needs changed.
start folding after you enter the info and make sure your getting core a3 work units.
To see the bonus points you'll need to use hfm.net to monitor your points it can be downloaded here:
[link=http://code.google.com/p/hfm-net/%3C/a%3E%3C/font%3E]http://code.google.com/p/..net/%3C/a%3E%3C/font%3E[/link]
If you have any questions or need help setting up smp2 please post here and me or someone else will be glad to help out the best we can.
a i7 can typicaly bring in 9-15k ppd useing all 8 cores a core 2 quad can bring in 5-10k ppd all of this will vary based on your OC and the work unit downloaded.
Now you don't have to worry about read and writes to your SSD drive and can fold without degrading your expensive drives. DO NOT FORGET cut and paste as much as possible!!! do not copy past then delete as this slows your SSD performance down quickly.
One tip for SSD systems is to not delete items cut and paste them to a external HDD and hook it up to a non ssd system and delte the files there.
HAPPY FOLDING WITH YOUR SSD SYSTEM!!!!!!!!
