Im having a weird problem that i just came across. When i have my system overclocked to 4.0GHz my Windows 7 only detects 3.99GB usuable RAM and when i have the system on stock Windows 7 detects the full 6GB. Any solutions or ideas would be appreciated. Heres my template Mother Board ( EVGA X58 LE ) Bios ( 70 ) CPU ( i7 920 ) CPU Cooler ( Venomous X) Memory ( 6GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600 TR3X6G1600C8D ) PSU ( Corsair HX750 ) GPU ( ASUS 5850 ) Operating System ( Windows 7 Ultimate x64 ) Frequency Control CPU Clock Ratio ( 20x ) CPU Host Frequency (Mhz) ( 191 ) MCH Strap ( Auto ) CPU Uncore Frequency (Mhz) ( x16 ) CPU Clock Skew ( 0 ps ) Spread Spectrum ( Disabled ) PCIE Frequency (Mhz) ( 100 ) OC Recorvery ( Enabled ) Turbo Performance (Disabled) Memory Feature Memory Speed ( Standard ) Memory Control Setting ( Enabled ) Memory Frequency ( 2:8 ) Channel Interleave Setting ( 6 Way ) Rank Interleave Setting ( 4 Way ) Memory Low Gap ( Auto ) tCL Setting ( 8 ) tRCD Setting ( 8 ) tRP Setting ( 8 ) tRAS Setting ( 24 ) tRFC Setting ( 88 ) Command Rate ( 1T ) Voltage Control EVGA VDroop Control ( Without VDroop ) CPU VCore ( 1.275 ) CPU VTT Voltage ( +100 ) CPU PLL VCore ( 1.2 ) DIMM Voltage ( 1.65 ) DIMM DQ Vref ( +0mV ) QPI PLL VCore ( 1.225 ) IOH VCore ( 1.1 ) IOH/ICH I/O Voltage ( 1.65 ) ICH VCore ( 1.1 ) CPU Feature Intel SpeedStep ( Disabled ) Turbo Mode Function ( Enabled ) CxE Function ( Disabled ) Execute Disable Bit ( Disabled ) Virtualization Technology ( Disabled ) Intel HT Technology ( Enabled ) Active Processor Cores ( All ) QPI Control Settings ( Enabled ) QPI Link Fast Mode ( Enabled ) QPI Frequency Selection ( 4.800 GT/s )

on the bootup screen, you have to hit the "pause" key at just the right second during the first screen. Hit another key to continue (other than del if you don't want BIOS). When you miss it, do <Ctl> <alt> <del> or press reset before Windows starts to boot.

That's why I still run revision SZ2Z. It's a prime testimony for not updating your BIOS without a good reason.

It happened to me the same when I flashed the lastest bios avaliable (Beta 70) I had to reflash other bios (50 I guess) I will give another try when it gets the final version.

Oh Xeon, sorry, I don't know about that. Here's what I was going to say: If you have a 920 or 930 the newer BIOSes just seemed to be more trouble, go with this one: EVGA X58 Classified (E760/E761/E769) - S61J BIOS Released But since you have Xeon I just don't know. It's up to you or perhaps someone else could comment about it. If you had a gulftown then you should use the latest.

On my new X58 FTW3 board, when I went from the shipping bios ( 59 ) to bios 71 for it that just came out because it contained the quick fix for the vreg temp issue, I lost 2gb of my 6gb of ram, both bios and windows showed only 4gb. I did not have this issue prior to flashing to this newer bios. I was able to get my other 2gb back by changing MCH strap from "auto" to "dram ratio". So apparantly there are some more recent bios' than can cause this for whatever reason. Don't know exactly what changing the MCH really does, does not seem to have cost me anything in performance, at least not in Vantage that I can tell. But it sure got me my missing 2gb of ram back.

Well I have just tried with the lastest beta bios (70) and I get some weird results: blck 133-180 6gb blck 180-185 2gb blck 185-205 4gb blck 210 6gb vcore 1.375-1.387 without any results vdimm 1.65-1.7 without any results vtt +200-300 with no results Ram speed 1600 2:8 6-7-6-18/7-8-7-20/8-9-8-24 Hpec tried 32 / 64 bits without any results It seems like the blck is the problem as far as I could try the beta. I reflashed with v 64 and the problem solved like I thougt. I couldn't boot with the 2:6 ram multiplier and... I could boot with the 2:10 with 6gb. A lot of combinations.... That's all.

I too would like to run at 6GB full, but it's at 3.99GB. Seems like the only option to have full 6GB on an high OC is to downgrade the bios. I don't do that because I think the features and updates from the older one to the newest is worth it. I don't think I go over 4GB when I play my games. If I'm below the 4GB line then anything more won't make any difference.

Just an observation: Funny, where the RAM amt is dropping is some of the hardest areas of speeds to achieve for OCing. You see, for most ppls they find OC gets a bit easier after 190, and wicked hard (a New England term) around low 180s. futuremark2 I don't do that because I think the features and updates from the older one to the newest is worth it. I don't think I go over 4GB when I play my games. If I'm below the 4GB line then anything more won't make any difference. Wow I guess just bc ppls have lots of posts don't mean they know what they are talking about more than ppls with less posts (sorry futuremark2, I don't mean anything personal by it but that was just "open mouth, insert foot"). Everybody knows that Windows reverts to the "swap file" when it uses up all RAM and then things stutter (a tiny bit) as the swap file is read and written. This may not happen on many games, it is more prevalent in the big more complicated 3D environments of today's shooters (or "action" games) and some games of other genres. And the more things you have open or running in the background, like AV, Steam, HP update, MS office applications, RSS feeds, input device update and drivers like Logitech setpoint, special input devices, USB headphones, game mods, webcams, etc; the faster you will fill your memory. What's more, games have been using steadily more and more RAM as the years progress, meaning what's common today is just a sliver of what will be used in a few years. Also if you are just using a 920 or 930 then all this years "features and updates" to BIOS' are just a mirage. There are none, unless you buy an FTW3.

Main (gaming) rig: i7-3930K; Asus Rampage IV Extreme; H100 W/p-p Excaliburs, AS5; MSI 7870 2GD5/OC; Crucial M4 SSD 256GB. See my primary ModsRigs: Adam for the rest, and I have a second (wife's) rig Asus Rampage III Extreme & 960: Eve. Overclocking is useless to me if it is not rock stable.
