Changed over from a server to a HTPC; due to some problems I was running into with ubuntu ..and maybe a little impatience The HTPC build is complete; though, 'ASUS Home Theatre Gate' is a bit of a joke. It doesn't really have any real features; it just borrows from windows, or something else. The mediaU program doesn't work either; though, the mediaU internet interface does. Been listening to a bit of soft Jazz; for most of the day. Something I could do on just about any Win 7 PC, really.

Anyway.. looks pretty good; and it's 24/7 operation.

..so, that's changed! Using Linux Mint 8 now; and have swapped out the HDD for a 500GB Seagate 7200.12. Very nice, quiet drive. Still have the 2 WD 640GB.. I'm going to throw them into my old Crosshair II based PC; and see how they do in that, with a fresh install of Vista. Fortunately, I did not activate my OEM of Win 7 Pro, on the HTPC build; so, I still have that, for later use somewhere else. Working on setting up the HTPC and Linux Mint; with almost no Linux experience, it's been interesting. Still, not too bad.

    First Pic's:

Also got some Innovation Cooling Diamond TIM, in 7 and 24 Carat, Windows 7 Pro 64bit OEM; and some Swiftech MC21 aluminum heatsinks, and Primochill zinc plated worm-drive clamps. ..those are for the Swiftech pump; and will be nicely hidden away, in the dark recesses of the case

...that's all for now. I'll update with some new pic's; when I get some more stuff

    Re:TBuild-Log [Work in Progress] 2010/05/22 15:56:21 (permalink)
Minor update: Just a few other things, I've picked up; and, a bit of power supply modding.

The idea is, I want to be able to quickly disconnect the 360 from the loop; and couple the qdc's, in a small loop out and back in. The 360 will just have a loop running in, to the GPU and CPU; and back out, through the watercooling grommets, at the back of the case. I can always just close the loop; when the system is not in use.
I picked up an OCZ Z550 Series PSU, for a small server; which I intend to design for ultra low power consumption. It's not 80 Plus Gold; but, it'll do for the price. Also, it's a non-modular design; which doesn't work well for me. So.. I'm making it modular; or, at least, cutting off the cables So, I cut off the extra connector's, in uneven length's; and heatshrink wrapped the up, giving plenty of cover. All I left, were the 20-24 pin Main power connector; and the SATA and Straight-Molex Connectors. That should be all I need; for the new home server.
Finally, I tested all of the connectors; after reassembling the new power supply. Still, maybe a bit more than I need; but, I'll leave that, for later. It's all on the outside of the PSU now, anyway. My test setup, includes a new Antec Digital Power Supply Tester; which, will also come in handy when I decide to leak test my water cooling. After cutting off all those connectors; it still appears to work pretty well.

Got my RAM coolers from Dazmode today Okay, so I'm not as happy as all that.. they cost a lot of money; and they seem a bit thin, (not quite flimsy). I see they have pressed metal edges; and have to wonder, at their ability to hold water. QC passed.. but that means little to me these days; save they looked at them, and decided they were unlikely to be defective. Hopefully, they hold water; as they sit right on the RAM chips k.. not really that funny

Anyway, just one pic for today; as the other package wsn't quite delivered. Had them redirect to my workplace; rather than drop it off in my neighbourhood. ..particularly with a big yellow and brown sticker; saying package from US on doorstep

They look relatively good, anyway; never as nice as online, but good.

got my G1/4 Quick disconnects, inline filter, and impingement plates in from Koolance today; and, I'll be picking up some parcels at the post office tomorrow.

Slowly getting all the base parts in; then I have to start--seriously--looking at the case. I'm either not happy with; or not able to use most cases out there. Mountain Mod's would fit; but, I think its a little excessive. Also has to be ordered from MM; as they no longer sell up here. ..I'd want custom anyway.

So, I'm pondering a custom case; and having it prefab'd, for me. ..saves me having to cut aluminum; which, I'd rather not. ..stuff melts to easily. I don't have a real shop; so, a custom fabrication, locally, makes the most sense. All I have to do; is find out the cost. ..working on a design allready; though, not excessively motivated. I've spent to much money allready

This stuff really does cost to much, in retrospect; however, whats done is done, and now I have to finish it. The real waste, would be to give up; with 85% of the build already paid for. Hopefully, I'm over that anyway; with the amount I've spent, to date. (edit: I can dream can't I)

I'll see what I can do about shrinking those pic's; they're a bit cumbersome on the load's. Like wearily drudging through a pigsty; scrolling to the bottom of the page.

Got my GPU 200 blocks in the mail on Friday; for used, they look pretty nice. Trying to keep the XBox 360 portion of the build, a little cheaper; which is why I jumped at the chance to pick up a couple used GPU blocks. These ones look good; and, they'll fit the standoff's, diagonally, for the XBox 360 board. ..out of the console case.

Also included a pick of some more fittings and the dual UV light; all of the fittings here, are for the 360 blocks.

Just a few back-ordered items arrived today; almost everything in fact. Still missing the remaining 6 Bitspower fittings; and the Lian Li mDTX case.

Some very cool specialized fittings here. Particularly like the Koolance Inline Flow meter; which, can shutdown my PC if the flow stops. (i.e.: the pump dies; or the system gets a blockage in the flow.)

The flow meter, actually comes in an anti-static bag. I was a little surprised at that; but, understand the logic. It is electronic after all.

..not much of a pic; but I thought I'd add it anyway. It'll be a bit yet; before I start doing any serious assembly; and I don't want to risk contamination, on any of the parts

edit: right... picture; almost forgot.. k.. I did forget

    Re:XBuild - updated - new GPU-200 waterblocks for XBox 360 part of build 2010/06/09 15:53:43 (permalink)
Got some new parts in today; these, for my server build mostly. The Noctua retention plates, and brackets; will be used to secure the waterblocks in the XBox 360, with some modification. They look and feel very nice; solid construction, and nice finish.. not that anyone will ever be able to see them

Some very nice fans; particularly the Gelid TC fan; which I will be using for the push fan in my server chassis. The 140mm Fractal Designs fan; will be for the pull fan, on the front of the chassis. ..and a nice mesh fanguard for the 120mm. It'll be a positive pressure system, with a good dust mesh on the intake; so I don't have to worry too much, about cleaning it

Still waiting on a few parts. Expecting 5 days before the order from newegg.ca comes in; and still waiting on the chassis, which was back-ordered. Hopefully, it won't be too long now

okay So, I've recieved permission from my household's ISP; to put a DHCP server on the network, so long as it remains an internal server.

    Very cool!

Now.. on with business. I'll be recieving the next bit of stuff to set up this glorious little mITX server; over the next 2 weeks, approximately. I'm not sure how long it'll take really; as, it's been quite some time since I ordered the chassis for this. However, when it does arrive; I'll be sure to post a small set-up and configuration post. shoul be very cool; and look pretty good

    Parts list:

    OCZ Z-SERIES 550W 80+ Silver PSU
Lian Li PC-Q08R Red Aluminum ITX Cube

wait xbox360 your doing a case mod or a xbox mod

Doing a full case and watercooling mod on the 360; but, not till later this year, as I have to get my server and primary system built first. I'm hoping they don't suddenly come out; with a next generation XBox, in the meantime. Got a bit of a scare, when I saw the possible PS4 trailer last night; though, its generally considered they're fake.

The XBox 360 will be moved into a Lian Li XB01 modding case; which I've shown above in one of the posts. Allready have everything; for that part of the build. I'm going to use quick disconnects to tie the loop into my main rig; with the option of using a short loop, to bypass the XBox 360 loop. Pretty simple idea, really; though, it increases the temps following the loop. I have a possible answer to that; which, I will get into later.

found that site: llamas.com ..not sure if I'll bother posting there; as it's really not strictly a 360 mod.

..anyway, I should be getting at least, most of the stuff; for the server in next week. Seems there has been a problem with my chassis backorder; though, it may just be a long delay in shipping. The order is no longer on my account; where I purchased it from. Hoping to get that resolved; or cleared up, on Monday or Tuesday this week. Hopefully, everything works out all right; and I'm not out a fair bit of money, and chassis

Re:Multi-build log (server, gaming rig, and xbox) - updated 06/09/10 2010/06/17 00:03:00 (permalink)
Finally got my parts in; the fittings I have been waiting for, and motherboard plus RAM. Been waiting awhile for the fittings; so, I'm glad they finally came. All I need now, is the server and HDD's for it; then I can start that build. Due to the backorder taking an inordinate amount of time; I am changing to a slightly pricier chassis. The Lian Li VM351I; which is actually blue. Which is allright, because the board and RAM are too; though, I hadn't counted on that when I made the purchase. So losing out on the lengthy back-ordered red chassis; isn't so bad afterall, and I think the build will be nicer without it.

    Re:Multi-build log (Server Build, minus HDD's) 06/19/2010 2010/06/19 13:06:13 (permalink)
Got my new chassis in yesterday; and I decided to put it together. I unfortunately, don't have my HDD's; so installing the new OS is going to have to wait till Monday, I think.

This chassis is not what I intended; however, it is still pretty nice. I'm a little disappointed in the fan set-up; but only because it doesn't allow a positive pressure chassis. Instead, the 2*120mm fans are mounted inside the chassis; with vents in the bottom and front of the channel in front of them. The mounting system is very good however; and once setup with the new fans, is easy, and pretty nice. The rear 180mm fan for the HDD's, is setup a little different; and is the only fan in the chassis, that allows air to be pulled directly from outside the case.

It has a removable motherboard tray, which is very nice; and only a little difficulty in installing other components, once you find your way around the case. The biggest issue, I had; was the connection of the chassis USB and HD Audio connectors. The cables aren't quite long enough, to reach over the board and plug in; until you have inserted the motherboard tray nearly all the way into the case. I'm also a little less than satisfied with the ATX cable management; though, thanks to my light PSU modding, I have enough room.

Once everything is setup, and the motherboard is fully installed; it is relatively easy to manage some decent cable tying. The 24-pin connector is a bit of a mutant; but, it tucks up behind the PSU if you have room. Thanks to a few clever little cable run modifications, and a bit of sleeving I did, it wasn't too bad; though, the SATA power connectors--from DVD to HDD's--may not work for all PSU's, and requires a bit of thought, to get in properly. It has to be done with all the 5.25" drive bay covers removed; so you can connect the DVD, and route the cable back to the HDD bay. It remains to be seen; how easy it will be to fit those connectors after.

All-in-all, the build went fairly well; and I am quite happy with the chassis. Everything appears to work, though the old Ubuntu live CD I have is giving a IO-APIC + Timer error; which, I seem to recall, it did as well on another computer. Might be why I tossed it on a shelf; and nearly forgot about it. It predates this hardware by quite a bit, anyway; being version 5.1, from quite a few years ago. Express gate install is also registering as incomplete; which might be perfectly normal, as I have no idea how it works yet.

You can find the worklog, for the DHCP server here. This thread will continue with my gaming rig build later; as I get parts in, and start to mod and/or build. I'll probably post briefly, regarding the completed network later; once I have it entirely set up, and running to my satisfaction.

Re:Multi-build log - cleaning up the old rig 2010/06/27 17:20:49 (permalink)
    Hello again,

Finally got everything together; though, not exactly as planned. I now have a small blue HTPC, which runs, not to bad; and I've taken the time to reorganize and clean up my room. Now, I'm starting to pull apart my old rig..and it's really about time .

so, here's a few pic's ..big ones this time

    The old Rig:

    ..dusty, isn't it

..and, where I'm at with my room:

..you should have seen it before The desk is the major change; it's supposed to be an L-shape. Had to mount that rounded little wing to the wall; can't say as I want to put anything really heavy on it

Two last Pic's, of the network wiring:

    ..and a little later

    that's all for now!

Have had a few modification's to the build list; and overall plan, for this build log. See edited posts regarding the components; and the main entry above, for that.

Aside from that, the HTPC seems to be running stable; with the new configuration. Running Linux Mint 8 on it; and that has been an experience. I'm still a Window's man; haven't really got the draw for Linux based operating systems. They are interesting, and useful, in there own way; but, far to complicated and user intensive, to be truly enjoyable. The file structure is monstrous.

I have attempted to install the DHCP server; however, it failed for unknown reasons. Likely, due to my not having installed libraries; of which, it is dependent on. I have no idea what these are at the moment, and the repositories contain some 29K plus packages to search through; which means I am not going to bother looking until I know for certain, what I am supposed to be installing.

    Lot's of fun..
