HOME MADE LN2 DISPENSER

If you don't understand the fundamentals of explosives then read no further.  Messing with pressurized LN2 could be catastrophic.

OK, now that we got that out of the way, I bought a 50L dewar that did not come with a cap.  The idea of tipping a 3 something foot dewar did not appeal to me either, so I decided to build a dispenser.  I was probably motivated by the insane cost of a dispenser, but its also so much more fun to make something that works.

So here we start out with the dewar:

50L is around 13 gallons, so it is a monster in its own right.

here is the opening that we have to seal:

The better the seal, the less leakage of pressure you will have.

Now comes the construction.  Basically we start with a steel plate and drill screws to match the hole pattern of the dewar.

Standard 6 screw 6/32 thread.

Here is the plate touched up, sanded and the holes cut:

You  can see the rubber orange seal through the main holes

Here is the welding of the main steel pipe:

No argon, using the all in one wire feed.

And the first finished product

Basically the LN2 gets forced from the bottom up the pipe by its own pressure when it evaporates.  The smaller pipe is basically just the pressure relief valve.  Safety first as always.

Here is the pressure test, a regular pump:

After letting it pump for about 30 minutes the pressure never went above 10 psi.

And the final version, with twice as many screws to hold it down:

It holds a steady pressure for a few hours.

The parts used were specifically designed for cryogenic use.  These are not just regular pressure valves,  they are rated to the -200° that LN2 typically sits around.  The dispensing valve is also rated for cryogenics.  The steel pipe was hope depot, and so was the pressure gauge.  If that craps out, I have a plug that I can remove the pressure gauge and install the plug.

Nice job. That's pretty sweet. How much did it cost you aside from labor/planning time, and lack of sleep?

    the globe valve was $100.00
    pressure relief valve was $10.00
    pressure gauge was 10.00
    Pipe was 20ish total?

I know these can be in the neighborhood of hundreds.

I feel like counting down until the LN2.  The funniest thing is trying to fit this MONSTER dewar in my Mazda Protege wagon.. upright.

The pictures of that alone are priceless.  I will probably post them in the next few hours.

Is that black pipe?  Nateman, I dont see this ending well; steel becomes brittle when subjected to below freezing temps.
I recall reading about shattered screwdrivers in the Antarctic, and that regularly "only" gets down to -60C.  LN is somewhere between -196C (boiling) and -210C (freezing).

In reading about how they deal with brittleness in Antarctica, stainless steel kept popping up.  If this one does fail on you, try stainless steel next time.

yea, plain steel pipe.  If this fails I will try stainless (or just end up going with the "tip" method)

I figured there is no "stress" on the metal so it won't be a problem.

shock and i was wondering the same exact thing.
and the screws that bolt it to the dewar...those aren't subject to any serious cold right?

the bolts holding it down are stainless steel.  Only way to find out is to test it.   A few hours away from that.

I would like to report 100% success with the dispenser.  It performed flawlessly.

Again, if you even slightly question your own abilities, I would not recommend doing this project.  Also don't cheap out on the pressure valves, and ball valves.   MAKE SURE they are designed for cryogenic use!  It performed as it was supposed to.

How often do you have to change out that LN2, does it stop being cold after some time? where did u buy the container to house that so it would cool the CPU? also, is it work having a CPU that is -160? wont that ruin it?

When you say "change out the LN2" what do you mean?

LN2 will sit in a DEWAR for a VERY long time, but not mine with the steel dispenser.  The LN2 does evaporate since I have the 10 psi safety release valve.  It slowly hisses overnight.

The reason we run LN2 is so that we can increase the voltage  to get the higher clocks stable.  the higher voltage and operating frequencies make the chip run hotter.  This may end the chips life prematurely, but at the rate that we upgrade hardware, it really is not an issue.

    Hey Nate,

Have you gotten the chance to use this a bit more? Anything you would change? I'm interested in making one for my Taylor Wharton dewar.

The TW dispensers have glass tubes on the inside, too... so I think I may attempt that. Not sure what my timeline is for trying this, though.

    WOW?!  holy Necoposting batman?!
heh.. no, I haven't really touched it since then.  I have been too busy making blocks.  Once in a blue moon I run across that actual dispenser when going into the closet, and the dewar itself has been in my garage since then with about an inch of dust on it.  If I ever get a slow moment I may pick benching back up... but its not cheap.  Life was good back in the day when two GTX 295's and an i7 920d0 was the world wide "best you could get" and it was a level playing field.  Now its like THOUSANDS for videocards.  Although I have dumped THOUSANDS into my CNC machines... at least those make money.. not a depreciating asset :P

But to answer your question, I would have just made it with a bit more precision.  I don't see any other solution to make it, other then how I did it.  Metal pipes will transfer the cold from the LN2, into the dispenser which will not be as effective as a real one.  Weigh the cost vs how often you will you is.  For me, I only used it once.. so it paid off in spades.  If I did it every day, and held the LN2 for prolonged periods.. the real one might be better.
