Having issues with your new gpu? Here are some basic troubleshooting steps everyone should try before creating a new thread. #1 Perform a clean boot of windows: - Instructions on how to perform a clean boot for windows vista, 7, 8/8.1 & 10 can be found here
Clean boot notes: Leave NVIDIA Display Container LS check-marked under the services tab. #2 Perform a clean installation of the most recent video drivers: - Uninstall Precision X/MSI Afterburner if installed, make sure to select "no" to saving profiles if asked. Reboot the PC now if you had to uninstall PX or Afterburner.
- Use DDU (Display driver uninstaller) in safe mode to clean out all your nvidia drivers. Use the clean and restart (highly recommended) option.
- Download & save the most recent graphics driver to your desktop. You can find the most recent graphics driver here.
- Run the graphics installer located on your desktop once the download is complete.
- Select custom advanced install, under custom installation options uncheck all options except graphics driver & physx system software, if you have a 3D capable monitor and would like to use 3D at some point please select both 3D options, check mark perform clean install, then click next to install the driver, reboot when asked.
#3 Nvidia control panel debug mode: - This should only be attempted if windows clean boot & clean driver installation didn't resolve your issue.
- This is a great feature to help determine problems with the card, or for games that are sensitive to overclocked video cards. To turn on Debug Mode, open the Nvidia Control Panel, then go to the Help menu, and check the Debug Mode option. If you have a reference model card, this option will be grayed out and you will need to use the latest version of msi afterburner to underclock the card.
Debug mode notes: If running your card in debug mode resolves your issues you will be left with two options... - A. Leave the card running in debug mode so you're able to play without problems. Leaving the card in debug mode forces the card to run at nvidia reference clock speeds all the time.
- B. RMA the card. I would personally recommend doing option b as all cards should work perfectly out of the box at out of the box clock speeds.
#4 How to underclock with msi afterburner: - Download & install latest version of msi afterburner. Latest version of msi afterburner can be found here.
- Run msi afterburner and adjust the following settings... set core clock (MHz) to as far negative as you can set it. Set memory clock (mhz) to as far negative as you can set it. Click apply (check mark button) to apply the changes.
- Retest system for issues. Leave afterburner running while retesting for problems.
Afterburner underclocking notes: If running your card underclocked resolves your issues you will be left with the same two options as listed above in debug mode notes. #5 Getting low fps/low gpu utilization inside your games? Here is the solution to low fps/low gpu utilization if you ever optimized your games with geforce experience... - Uninstall geforce experience from your computer.
- Reboot pc.
- Delete game config file from main install directory. Deleting the game config file from the main directory will force the game to rebuild a new config file on next game start which should reset all your graphics settings back to default settings for you to adjust manually.
- Config graphics settings manually.
- Should be good to go now.
#6 By default the xbox app has game dvr turned on since the windows 10 anniversary update. This is causing a mess of problems with games previously running at 90-120 FPS suddenly being capped at or below 60 FPS. It also has been known to cause microstutters. Solution #1:Open Xbox App -> Settings (gear button) -> Game DVR (tab) -> enable/disable silder to OFF. Soultion #2 (no microsoft account): Open Registry Editor (Run > regedit) Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore Set the value of DWORD "GameDVR_Enabled" to 0 Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\ Create key "GameDVR" Create DWORD 32bit called "AllowgameDVR" and set to 0 Restart PC & Retest system.

i had a problem yesterday with installing my 1080 sc my pc wouldn't boot it would just sit at the mob screen and wouldn't let me do anything, keyboard and mouse lit up but were not responsive. what it was is i never updated my mob bios (never saw the need to until now) so it would not detect the 1080. you should put that on your list cuz it was a pain to figure out what i needed to do to update the bios with making a bootable usb drive. i can write a step by step list of what i did later if you need

Make sure your running windows version 1511 and selecting the correct driver version for your os (32-bit vs 64-bit)

You need the latest build of Windows 10 to install newer Nvidia drivers. Grab an updated ISO to burn to DVD, or to make a bootable USB, using microsoft's media creation tool - http://www.thewindowsclub.com/windows-10-media-creation-tool-create-installation-media-upgrade Or just update from within Windows.

Should OC software like MSI AB or Precision X, be uninstalled first, then DDU drivers, then reinstall OC software - for best stability ? I run DDU, and custom install the EVGA / Nvidia drivers --- Only selecting PhysX and the actual GPU driver, none of the other "stuff" and select clean install. ( I do NOT load GeForce Experience software, Nvidia 3D drivers, Nvidia Sound ) (edit added link DDU)

So I received my evga gtx 1080 ftw two days ago and had instant issues. I installed it in an Alienware graphics amplifier for my 17r3 with a gtx 980m. I tried playing Doom, GTA 5 and, Rise of the Tomb Raider and was getting crashes when loading and getting single digit fps when I could get the games to load. I completely removed all traces of NVIDEA on my PC and did a clean install. I still had the same issues. I called NVIDEA, DELL, and EVGA and spent most of my day yesterday on the phone trying different things with no success. Then I read your post this morning about checking the debug mode in the Nvidea control panel. That seemed to do the trick and I am now getting double the fps as I was on my 980m and no more crashes. My only concern is that after checking the debug mode it stays greyed out and I can't uncheck it. The card seems to be working well now so I am not sure I need to uncheck it but I also know it is now no longer overclocked. Do you have any idea how to get the debug mode unchecked? I was thinking about downloading the EVGA precision XOC software to play with some settings but maybe I should just leave it as is?

I haven't used an amplifier before, so that might introduce specific issues. But assuming it works as intended, debug mode means you are running at core clocks and your card may be unstable at the factory overclock. You may want to look at an RMA with eVGA or return it locally (if that is an option) and get another FTW. Call eVGA with the debug stable result and see what is said.

Welcome to the forums shaun Did you reboot the PC ? Thanks for the feedback that this thread helped you. (You maybe should start your own thread for help though, if reboot does not fix it)

Drivers change so frequently now that anything they would put in the box will be outdated. Just get them directly from NVIDIA or from here.
