How to use a multimeter Multimeters can be a very useful tool for modding. They can be used in a wide varity of electronics. Contents I: Testing Battery Charge II: Continuity (Connection between two points) III: Testing resistance (Ohms) IIII: Measuring current IIIII: Warnings Never ever connect the meter to a mains supply. Never change the dial when you have it connected to a circuit. Respect your meter I: Testing Battery Charge or voltage It is quite easy to test battery charge with a multimeter, all you have to do is set it to the DC voltage side (As shown below). You need to know roughly how many volts the battery has so Eg. If it is a AAA battery they normaly have 1.5volts so we want to select the Less than 20 volts option.  Now simply touch the positive side of the battery with the prositve prong and the negative with the other prong.  *IT SAYS 1.13V* II: Continuity (Connection between two points) Circuits must be continuous or complete, they must allow current to flow. Switches, fuses and wire connectors demand good continuity. While good fuses and closed switches have good continuity, blown fuses and open switches have no continuity. Testing Conunity is the easiest thing to do with a voltmeter its simply setting the dial to what is shown in the picture below.  Then touching 1 point and another point with the other prong it will show if they are connected together by changing the value on the screen. From  To

III: Testing resistance (Ohms) When you buy a resistor they will tell you it is for example 10 kila ohms when it is never exact so with a digital multimeter you can find the exact resistances. The same rule applys same as the voltage options you need to have a rough idea of how many Ohms your resistor resists. Below is a expample.   This resistor is supposed to be 15 ohms but they are never exact and a multimeter will tell you the exact resistance.  IIII: Measuring current Measuring current means to find out how many amps the circuit is drawing this can only be done by putting your multimeter in series with the circuit instead of parallel.

hello, can somebody make a how to guide about testing voltages with a multimeter on an evga x58 classified 3-Way SLI, i mean everything , step by step from scratch, i got a digital multimeter from eBay but i have no idea how to use it with my board, which cable put in on the measure points, at what setting of the multimeter, etc.. here a picture of the multimeter i got   i just want to test if all voltages are correct on the board, and matching what the bios shows up.

i just want to test if all voltages are correct on the board, and matching what the bios shows up.
It is very simple. Place the selector dial to the 2000m setting in the DCV range. This means that it is measuring 2000 millivolts DC which is equal to 2 volts DC. Place the black testing lead into the hole labeled COM which stands for common. Place the red testing lead into the hole labeled V/Ohms/mA (the middle hole). Now, attach the black testing lead to a conductive part of your computer case or onto a screw which is attaching your motherboard to your case. Then, touch the red testing lead on each motherboard voltage testing point and read the voltage displayed on your multimeter.

All of your pictures are broken.  It is hard enough to hold one testing lead on the small voltage measurement points, let alone two. The case should be at the same potential as ground as long as your PSU is wired correctly and your case isn't made of a non-coductive material with no ground wires attached to the component grounds.
