I built my new machine this morning (everything brand new): E758-A1 Xeon W3520 (w/Corsair H50) 12GB G.Skill PI 7C Gigabyte GTX 260 SO Intel 160GB SSD system/programs Samsung 1TB System offload/storage Corsair TX850W PSU 5x 120mm Fans (2 on H50 as intake in front, 1x bottom front intake, 1x rear exhaust, 1x top rear exhaust) 1. I flashed to E758_49 just a little while ago ... where do I verify that is the BIOS I installed? CPU-Z shows "6.00 PG" - I don't think that's even a previous revision ??? 2. I'm not an overclocker, I have no interest in it (yet). CPU-Z shows my CPU @ 2917 MHz (should be 2667). Is this the multiplier? Should I set it to 20 or just leave it alone (anything to do with my memory?) ? 3. I'm not sure how to read memory stats ... I see the 12GB, I see the G.Skill rated timings (7-8-7-24), but do the frequencies look right? Is DDR3 1600 / 7-8-7-24 / 1.5v 4. I was very worried about my VREG temps when I first got the system running this morning (55-60 C). Only thing I have changed is the BIOS (updated to 44 about 2 hours ago, then saw the new 49 a little while ago and updated again). It shows mid 40s now. MUCH better, but why is it lower now? SCREENIES! The 3 columns below show Value | Min | Max
--Desktop-- Windows 95, Pentium MMX @ 260 MHz, 32MB RAM, 2GB HDD, dual liquid-cooled 3.5 floppy drives, Creative Sound Blaster 16 --Portable-- Apple IIc - 1.023 MHz, 128 KB RAM, Internal AND External 5.25 Floppy, Volume dial control, 40/80 Column Monitor, small trunk with Apple sticker to carry it in

you ca not read the Bios version with cpuz try everest, or the second boot screen, but it goes by fast. at last report the latest BIOSES have issues with all mem speeds except 2:8, I can't tell you much about it as I stuck with an older BIOS untill the problems got resolved, I'm not sure how many people will be able to tell you about 49, as it came out Hours ago, so I doubt many have tried it. THE 6.00 PG is the gernric Award #, I beleave every BIOS I have ever used in my 758, or 760,has listed that in CPU-Z If you want to fall back to the BIOS your board was originaly shiped with you can find out what version it was on a small white sticker located near the bios chip.

1. I flashed to E758_49 just a little while ago ... where do I verify that is the BIOS I installed? CPU-Z shows "6.00 PG" - I don't think that's even a previous revision ??? As KMoore suggested use Everest in windows. You can also see it in the boot, but it's very fast... 2. I'm not an overclocker, I have no interest in it (yet). CPU-Z shows my CPU @ 2917 MHz (should be 2667). Is this the multiplier? Should I set it to 20 or just leave it alone (anything to do with my memory?) ? You have Turbo enabled which gives a higher clock than stock. I'd leave it alone for now since you are not going to be overclocking right away. 3. I'm not sure how to read memory stats ... I see the 12GB, I see the G.Skill rated timings (7-8-7-24), but do the frequencies look right? Is DDR3 1600 / 7-8-7-24 / 1.5v. 794.5 x 2 = 1589. This is what you ram is running at. Did you use the XMP Profile? Whatever, if it's stable and all is working then I'd say you are doing well especially since you are using all 12GB with the new bios. I would put the DIMM Voltage at 1.65v in the BIOS though. 4. Not sure about this one, but maybe the new BIOS is reading things differently. The temps seem normal with the other BIOS to though. I don't think you are high at all if that's what you were thinking.

Thanks a bunch for the reply, YerBuddy. That's good news about the RAM. Is the "x2" for 2x sets of 3-channel (6 dimms)? G.Skill's site shows that RAM should be @ 1.5v with the timings I listed above. Should I still set the voltage to 1.65? Seems like G.Skill expects it to tun @ 1.5. Yes, I am using the XMP profile (for simplicity). I ran Memtestx86 for 3 passes with the XMP profile set as above last night before I installed Windows this morning. It passed all 3, so I assumed it was fine. I honestly expected at least one problem with at least one DIMM ... I am surprised it all works (all 12GB). I was honestly expecting to RMA (I read so many memory horror stories when purchased from the Egg and delivered by UPS). What is a safe temp for VREG? What is VREG? Where is it on the MB (E758)?

The x2 is for all double data rate, even if you only had three sticks in there. I would keep your voltage at the manufacturers recommended. Maybe someone else will chime in here cause I'm not sure about that. I've always thought it should be 1.65v, but maybe things are changing. If she's stable, then I'm always of the opinion I "don't fix what ain't broke..." Your VReg is the Voltage Regulator. The little mosfet chips loctated underneath the small heatsink to the left of the CPU socket. You can reduce this temp by placing an Antec spot fan or any small fan close to the heatsink and focusing air threw the fins. Don't even get me started on what I think is normal... All I'll say is that your VReg temps you are reporting are what the rest of us see as well.
