Hi guys, I was looking at ordering a backplate when I order my 780 since I've heard it helps strengthen the card.  Looking at the backplate info page in the store it mentions it can also reduce temps by up to 3C?  I'm curious how that works since it would seem like it would close the card in more.

Actually it acts passively.. If I'm not mistaken, there are some thermal pads that rest on the back of the card on the vrm (I'm not sure that's right) but either way it kind of creates a secondary heat sink for your card(s). It also helps to physically protect the card....... and it looks sexy. Definitely worth it.

Ah ok that would make sense.  I downloaded and looked at the install instructions but the pictures and instructions didn't mention anything like having thermal pads/etc. to help conduct heat.  Ok, off to order :)

There are no thermal pads so to speak. Sometimes there is a foam pad used for contact protection[I think]. I think the back plate helps the card radiate heat possibly....
I always try to put a back plate on my cards. One reason is the "finished" look it gives, another hypothetical is protection from anything contacting the card while running. I think EVGA should include the back plates , just my opinion.

Here's a photo of my Titan Black backplate (lower right corner).  You can see the thermal pads which are positioned over various components on the back.

There are no VRM MOSFETs on the back of the card. It has thermal pads for the memory chips (higher memory cards with memory on the back of the PCB) and a thermal pad in the center over the back of the GPU core.

If someone got a backplate with no thermal pads on it, they should contact EVGA because that is a mistake. Notfordman, it is a thermal pad, not foam.

As mentioned, the cooling is entirely passive.  In the past, I believe foam was used on some backplates.  Currently, the backplates mostly use thermal pads to draw off additional heat and avoid direct shorts/grounding.  With decent airflow in the system, it can pull a bit more heat off the metal of the backplate.  If you have a card overheating, this would not likely be a potential fix, but could take a couple degrees off your temps if you want it lower.  Really, though, it's more about the looks of the backplate than anything else.

Thanks for clarifying. Thats why I said I wasn't sure that my statement was right but I was fairly certain there were thermal pads :)
