Well I got my new power supply from corsair and decided to remove the case from the equation... I installed my new Noctua HSF and everything on my motherboard box... I go to turn it on... I hear a click and the cpu fan spins and the gpu fan tries to spin... All for about half a second then nothing no boot or anything... What could it be?

Was the board fully posting before the PSU was replaced ? The burning smell might have been coming from another location then previously thought. Check the board for any oddities like discoloration or burn marks. If you have access to a spare PSU I would highly recommend this in order to verify if the board is still posting.

Yes the board was posting fine before I had to replace it... I can try to get access to a power supply tomorrow maybe the new one is faulty? AX860 I was thinking 860w should be enough... I checked and cannot find any burn marks... Maybe I should check under vrm heatsink I don't want to void warranty though...

If the board was posting fine prior to the new PSU, the PSU would be my 1st suspect as your issue. You're probably thinking the same thing.

Yeah the only reason I had to replace it was because of that smell.. Could it have anything to do with my surge protector?

Easy enough to find out...bypass the surge protector. Plug in right to the wall to test.

Normally a non boot as what you describe seems to be the ATX cable and/or CPU motherboard cable not being plugged in all the way. Reseat both of those cables.

I got this exact same thing with the exact same PSU when I built my new PC a year ago. AX860 that would click on for half a second, then click back off, but would never boot. There is a PSU test you can perform, by jumping two pins on the 24 pin PSU cable. See here: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/blog/2011/may/testing-your-corsair-power-supply If this does the same thing, your PSU is the culprit.

My bet is on the PSU, based on the symptoms at least. Have you talked to Corsair yet before you RMA the board? Main reason to blame the PSU is that the board worked before as you said.

There was a thread on here not too long ago about issues with the Corsair 860 and the Dark. The issue was fixed when the users tried a different PSU.

It seems from my research it's the psu... I'll see if I can find a spare one... Does anyone know if it would be worth it to rma again or should I sell it? It is brand new just took it out of the box and this just really sucks

From what I remember, the only solution was to use a different PSU. There is some sort of incompatiblity between the X79 Dark and Corsair's AX series PSUs

I have found a Thermaltake smart that I used to use but it only has one cpu 8 pin I know on the ROG boards it's okay if you use only one and any other board I've used with two worked fine with one... My question is evga the same way

If you're not doing any kind of extreme OC on the CPU, you can use just one CPU power connector.

Called eVGA and as always outstanding support! Unfortunately this is a pretty much odd issue and maybe in my opinion would be fixed if I updated bios but probably not. I'll just sell and pick up an evga 1000 G2 or 850G2

Could be a bios issue, but as mentioned in a previous post, there were at least a couple threads right after the release of the Dark where the AX860 turned out to not be compatible with the Dark for whatever reason. According to those members, swapping out PSU's resolved their issue. If you could get your hands on a different PSU just to rule it out one way or another would give you some peace of mind as you troubleshoot.

Yeah... Do you know the difference between the 1000 P2 and G2 besides the rating? Also why did they go all black for the 1000 G1 and 750/850G2 but not the P2 or 1000G2 odd.... Anyways thanks everyone for your help and thanks Bdary!

Glad to hear its working. Sucks that you have to get a new PSU but at least you've figured it out now. I'm curious though why they do not work together.

Corsair's power supplys do this eventually. My AX 1200 was solid until it stopped turning on. If I cut power from the wall and re-connected it, it would start up fine. I swapped it out and have yet to have the issue.
