I am attempting to upgrade to a Z77 FTW from an AMD 990FX platform, and I have ran into a wall. With everything hooked up, I can no longer boot to Windows. The BIOS recognizes the hard drives, but it will just go straight to:
"MBR Error 1"
"Press any key to boot from floppy...."
Assuming I needed to re-install Windows 7, I tried to go that path. However, when trying to install Windows, it indicates all of the hard drives are GPT format, and cannot be used. I know they are not, and one already has Windows on it, so clearly it cannot be GPT. Even re-formatting a drive as MBR in a working Windows and trying again, it still indicates it cannot install windows because it is a GPT format.
What am I missing? Do I have something wrong in the BIOS? The BIOS is up to date and has been set back to default. The board was purchased used.

In your bios, under the BOOT tab. What is your hard drive bbs setting?

The only bbs I see is priority so, my Hard Drive BBS Priority is: Boot Option #1 [P1: WD6000BHLX...] Boot Option #2 [P3: ST31500541AS..] Boot option 1 is my drive with the OS on it. I understand if I need to re-install the OS with the new motherboard, but I am not able to do that when Windows indicates all of my drives are GPT.

That is really odd. So you can't even do a fresh install when booting from the Windows C.D.?
Did you load bios defaults, save, and exit before trying?

I would try putting that hard drive in a different machine, and format it. Also, make sure it is plugged into one of your INTEL sata ports on the board.

That is correct. I when I try to do a fresh install from the Windows CD, it gives me a warning on every hard drive that it cannot install on this partition. When I click on the warning, it tells me it is formatted as GPT. I have loaded bios defaults, as well as trying all 3 of the bios switches, just to see. I did put a hard drive in another machine, formatted it, and tried that as well, with the same result. I will try with a different drive, but it still seems strange.

Boot the Windows 7 DVD and choose the repair option and bring up a command line.
Type: bootrec /fixmbr
Followed by: bootrec /fixboot

Good idea trying a different drive. Still very odd though.
Even better idea from R.J.on fix mbr.

Did you try to delete the partition, and go from there with the install, under custom install?

Even after the /fixmbr and /fixboot, it still came up with the same GPT error. Just as a shot in the dark, I decided to try an intentional GPT install. I formatted it as GPT in the other PC and changed my boot order to the UEFI CD drive. It is currently installing, although it still recommended I not install to a GPT partition. I will see how it goes.

I did not try to install windows on another machine using the same hard drive. That would have been a good idea to rule out (or not) the hard drive. Currently, everything is working with Windows installed on a GPT partition. So at least it is working.

Alright, after more testing, it looks like it was the hard drive. I am not sure of the specific problem, as I have not heard of a hard drive refusing to be formatted as a different type. Presumably, I was getting a false success when trying to format it as MBR in Acronis. The second hard drive (which still had to be formatted in a second PC) allowed an install when I booted the DVD drive in non-UEFI mode, indicating it was formatted properly.
So there were 2 solutions to the problem. I could either swap to a more cooperative hard drive or intentionally install on a GPT partition, which has yet to cause any issues. I am sticking with the GPT install because the hard drive is much faster. Most forums, even some recent, were indicating this is impossible.
Sorry for the less than definitive answer for anyone who comes across the same problem. On a plus side, the motherboard appears to be not in any way at fault.
