Hi everyone, yesterday I received my 2nd EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC ACX and installed it into my system. I didn't have too much time to test, so I just fired up 3DMark to do a test run of Ice Storm, Cloud Gate and Fire Strike. During Fire Strike my system suddenly shut down, just like somebody pulled the cord and rebooted itself into Windows. Here the detailed specs of my system: Motherboard: MSI Z87 MPOWER MAX CPU: Intel Core i7-4770K @ 4.4 GHz CPU-Cooler: Corsair H100i RAM: 8 GB DDR3-2400 GPU: 2x EVGA GTX 780 Ti SC ACX SLI PSU: Enermax Revolution 85+ 920W System was stable until the 2nd GTX 780 Ti went in. Is my PSU maybe too weak during heavy load? Any ideas what could be the problem are appreciated. Thanks!

Could be the psu, could be a bios setting in relation to power delivery to the mobo.

As doorules states, PSU is usually the first thing to suspect when system shutdowns are involved. Doing some looking, looks like that is a multi-rail +12V. How do you have the two cards connected? You might be pulling too much from 1 rail. Check to see if you are only pulling 1 card per 1 rail. Plus your CPU has a decent overclock on it as well, probably drawing a little more power there as well. Otherwise, it might just starting to fail and not providing good clean power. Does look like that model could be a few years old, maybe 3?

...if the unit has multiple PCI-E power cables unhook one from the card and try another one...

I've had some serious issues with faulty rails in enermax power supplies. Do you have a rail tester by chance?? I suspect the VGA rail is bad.

Thanks for all your answers. It looks like the top card is overheating during heavy load. When I open the side door of my case, both cards stay around 10 °C cooler and there was no shutdown since then.

Could be heating up the inside of the case and overheating the cpu. The gpu's will downclock themselves as low as needed to cool them down to operating temps. So im betting its you cpu overheating. The gpu's have that nice ability to adjust.

Welcome to the world of ACX coolers in SLI. Definitely need a very good case and fan arrangement to keep temps in check. What is your case and fan configuration? What kind of temps were you seeing before and after with the door off?

Can you space the cards out across the slots? Im assuming you have 3 slots?

The CPU stays cool, not higher than 55C during gaming. My case is the Corsair Carbide Air 540 with 2x 140mm fans in the front and 1x 140mm fan in the back. And 2 fans from the H100i CPU cooler exhaust mounted.

85C and 76C now with the side door open (temp target at 95C). Idle 30C both cards (even with closed case).
Third slot is not really an option with the HDD beneath it.

Are you using a custom fan curve in Precision X? If not, you should and make the curve more aggressive, meaning to ramp the fan speed up higher at lower temps. Of course this will create a little more noise, but should help with temps. The standard fan profile favors low noise more so than temps, so it doesn't ramp up as fast.

I will try a custom fan curve. Further overclocking is not possible at the moment. With only one card before I had no temp problems and I had a moderate overclock of 1200/3600 MHz with good temps and no throttling. Maybe I can ramp up the case fans too to get a better airflow inside the case. Will try that tomorrow evening when I'm back at home.

As mentioned air flow is critical. Before I put mine under water I was still able to get above 1300 core in bench runs, but I have a completely open case. And again as mentioned use a much more aggressive fan curve.

I ramped up the case fans and made a more aggressive custom fan curve for both GPUs. It's quite better now, but under full load both cards still clock down from standard boost 1137 MHz because they run into power target after a while when they get hot. Well, I think I have to live with that, because I don't want to keep my case open all the time. So no further overclocking for me.

Well at least your system is not shutting down. You might have to re-imagine your airflow into the chassis. Maybe tie-wrap a fan behind the video cards to help with airflow.

Yes, or maybe just better case fans would help. The 3x 140mm fans are still Corsair's standard fans which came with the case.

Today I found out, that both GTX 780 TIs were running on the same 12V-35A rail. So maybe that was the problem of my shut downs under load. I changed the connector on my PSU now for the second card so that it runs on a separate rail. :)
