One rule stated that a bullied kid should "treat the person who is being mean as if they're trying to help you." Another instructed students not to "tell on" bullies and "learn to laugh at yourself."

Yeah when I was a freshman in high school the seniors would haze the freshman class.  They eventually got to me while I was eating lunch and I told them to leave me alone...  The two of them refused so I used the ice pack my mother put in my lunch and hit one of them in the face as hard as possible then tackled the other one and starting punching his face.  I had been the target of bullying since 5th grade but after that moment no one ever picked on me again.  The only rule and true way to not get bullied is to stand up and fight back.  Then again when I was a senior some one got in my face in the middle of history and tried to bully me.  So I got up and threw my desk on him.  Finished Highschool without ever having another incident...  RushXTC that is how it's done!

I was known for being hazardous with my pens (Zebra F-301s) and pencils (Pentel Quicker Clicker).  You would get a warning, then I would stab you with them, usually in a sensitive spot like the back of the hand or forearm.
I was considered an odd duck, so between my tendency to stab people who really annoyed me and my odd demeanor, people mostly left me alone.

Was bullied in the 5th grade, guy tried to come back at me in 7th and I grinded his face on the asphalt. All the guys around me said he tripped and fell on the Asphalt, after that he never talked to me again. I really, REALLY hate bullies.

I got bullied in middle/high school but the worst part is when I slammed the bully's face into the locker and gave him a few stitches, I GOT IN TROUBLE. Not fair

My life was tough growing up, back in Russia I had a lot of bullies growing up. I had only a few friends who were my best friends. When I moved to Canada at 10, I was bullied in elementary school, up until the point that I just went from being a small 4"5' tall 6th grader to a 5"10 7th grader over one summer.. Being the tallest kid in elementary school was pretty cool.
 
basically the point of my part-life story is instead of feeling crappy when someone bullies you, make it your plate of food. Eat that hate and make yourself stronger. That is one of the lessons I learned that can not only be used to fight off bullies, but in business too. No matter how good or bad your idea is, you will receive hatred. Use that hatred to build your strength and beliefs that you will succeed. That is why I personally chose to become an entrepreneur and personally believe that I think different from the regular crowd. I know it involves risk and high chance of failure. Yet nearly every successful person will tell you that "I'm not successful because I got lucky, I'm successful because I failed more times than you."

TL;DR When people start hating, then you are probably doing something right, or they want to be like you.
 
 

Been bullied before in Jr. High.  I was kind of a tolerant passive person until somebody threw a class book at the back of my head.  They weren't so lucky next go around when I dragged them screaming down the halls to the main office. 
 
Naturally, my choice actions weren't tolerated by the teachers, so I got in trouble too.  That the correct action that I should have taken was to tell a teacher.  And they wonder why bullies continue to be bullies.

Zillers have to agree with you   Yet nearly every successful person will tell you that "I'm not successful because I got lucky, I'm successful because I failed more times than you."Very true read about Hersheys Chocolate, Babe Ruth and Abraham Lincoln fail your way to success monetarily speaking and or personal values. Was never bullied because of my attitude and size. We had bullies in school that took advantage of other class mates. Often intervened and was one of those kids that would fight at the drop of a hat. Always felt like  talk was cheap with an attitude of fairness. Lets put it this way facing some court orders my grand father signed paper work so I could enlist in the USMC in 1967 one year prior to high school graduation. My wife and I are celebrating our 45th wedding anniversary with our children and grand children. Our grandson asked me the other day if I ever wanted to change any thing in my life. Told him no, because my failures and success made me who I am today.

Lincoln succeeded because he had everyone of his political opponents locked away on Alcatraz. Other than that I agree with you.

Ive always been able to walk away from fights. But now days, screw that! And bust/break that Cupcake nose and watch em cry and bleed like the cowards they are!

On topic: Its the bigger man or woman that walks away. But, the sad thing is, that same bully that ya walked away from would most likely turn around come back at you and BANG. Yall want to stop bullying, start holding these douchebags accountable from the get-go, not let things go and on......................................
 
And parents need to do the same and be consistent, and hold their kids to be responsible, respectful and accountable. And cash, or Mommy,  dosent mean the eazzy way out or this all or nothing attitudes we now see.
 
American need to Buckle-Up (buck up), or when we see this upcoming Great Depression and or WW3, The USA is going to be so freaking screwed.....

Back when I grew up, parents(at least in Romania) told me to fight back if someone got me in a corner. I did that, and I didn't get bullied. Sometimes bullies only bully until you get in their face - once you do that, it's over for them as they realize they lost power over you.

Haven't ever in my life stood to be bullied. It's sufficient to say that when it was attempted it didn't last long.
