Started having some significant problems with my GTX 680 about a week ago. We had a particularly hot couple days in Southern California the last couple weekends. So I was playing Arkham Origins and I got some green artifacting and then a black screen. I was able to alt-tab out and restart my computer. The graphics driver had crashed so I was at a really low res, but I restarted. As soon as my computer POSTS i get an error saying "Overclocking failed". I've never overclocked this computer before. In fact, after I restarted - I uninstalled Asus AI Suite II just in case and also went into the BIOS and reset everything to defaults just to be sure.

Then, 2 nights ago, as I was playing Heroes of the Storm for about 2 hours - black screen and a total lockup. Keyboard and mouse weren't responding. Had to press power button to power down. Upon reboot, I get to the Windows logo and black screen again and another restart. My computer was stuck in a reboot loop. I reboot in safe mode and do some internet searching and it turns out that crash had corrupted my graphics drivers. So I uninstalled from the Device Manager and redownloaded the latest nVidia drivers for my GTX680 2GB Superclocked. This weekend - I cleaned out my entire case. Made sure to properly clean the fins on the GPU cooler with compressed air. That seemed to bring the temps down a few degrees. My case is huge - it's a NZXT Switch 810 and there's plenty of cooling in there. The CPU cooler is a Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO.

So I posted to Tom's Hardware about my overheating issue and people seemed to think it was my fan profile. I downloaded EVGA Precision X and made a fan profile based on what some other GTX680 users had. Everything seemed fine until tonight. I'm playing Heroes of the Storm again and I'm getting stuttering. Not micro-stuttering, but full on stuttering. I have the Fraps frame counter running in the corner and I'll drop from 90 fps to 35 and then back up to 90 within a second. I tried different configurations. Normally I play at 2560x1440 Fullscreen Windowed mode, but I switched down to 1920x1080 Fullscreen and no change. I turned off Aero, but no change. I went into the nVidia Control Panel and reset everything to defaults - no change so far.

I'm out of ideas. Could anyone assist me in diagnosing the problem?

Here are my specs at idle as well as my fan curve:

Re: Big Problems with my GTX 680 2014/04/15 00:29:43 (permalink)
    Welcome to the EVGA forums
Please post your system specs, OS version, currently installed Nvidia driver version and monitor details for review..

The Asus AISuite is -known- to have terrible issues with Nvidia drivers for which is was not designed for... (thats ALL current Nvidia drivers)
It should NOT be installed or used at all because of this.

Other programs like HWMonitor, AIDA, SpeedFan Etc.. also use injectors into the Nvidia drivers to monitor videocard sensors and for control...
These can all have the same issues as the AI Suite, with newer drivers and videocard sensors

The first failure sounds alot like a SMB conflict (a program(s) using the sensors) and then you damaged your Nvidia driver install by using Device Manager
*(as per Nvidia, Device manager should NOT be used as a Microsoft patch has changed the behavior and Nvidia driver installs can now be damaged by using it)

The second could simply be a bug from a new game...

Its unclear "how" you installed your Nvidia driver after all of this (posted above) and then you put in Precision.
    ---------------------------

You need to PROPERLY recover from the above before starting testing

    -----------------------------

Shut down and uninstall EVGA Precision
*VERY IMPORTANT: during the Precision uninstall a box will pop up asking to save data. You MUST answer -NO-
After the uninstall is complete, REBOOT once (do NOT skip this reboot)

Now manually download Nvidia 337.50 BETA (or the driver of your choice)
--DO NOT USE the GeForce Experience to download or install--
*If you have the GeForce Experience installed, go to Control Panel/Programs and features and UNINSTALL it

After downloading your driver of choice...
Launch the installer, choose -only- CUSTOM Mode
UNCHECK -ALL- Nvidia driver components, except for Graphics driver and PhysX (nothing else checked)
*Do make sure the you put a check in the box for "Perform a clean install"
    Now install the driver
After the install is complete, reboot your computer once (do NOT skip this reboot)

You may now install Precision X
    Use ONLY version 4.2.1
*It is suggested to -uncheck- the RivaTuner (RTSS) addon during the install
Set Precision to start at boot, and use a aggressive user fan profile for testing (example below)

*remember that Precision must be running for the fan profile to be active.

All of this should get your Nvidia driver in CLEAN and give you a STRONG fan profile for further testing
    ------------------

This is not to say that something else might be going on...
But getting your drivers back in -correctly- and having a strong fan profile will rule out drivers and temps and allow for further testing

Do keep in mind that Heroes of the Storm is still in beta, and doesn't make a very good stability test. I would suggest testing with some other games that are not in beta, or running some benchmarks to test for crashing.

@maniacvvv - I'll give your instructions a shot. Is it necessary to Uninstaller the nVidia drivers first before manually downloading the latest drivers from the website? Should I select "clean install" once I'm in the driver installer?

I will try to answer for Maniac.  Please correct me if I am wrong.

No, you shouldn't have to uninstall the drivers first.  Selecting CLEAN install should take care of it.  But I would manually restart your computer AFTER the driver has been installed if it does not do so automatically.

    Good luck

You're spot-on Randolla. A clean install should be sufficient.

    Update:

Ok - I uninstalled Precision X and the GeForce Experience and reinstalled Precision X and the drivers via direct download.

Unfortunately, no improvement. Jumped into Heroes of the Storm and Batman Arkham Origins and still noticed the stuttering issue. What's interesting is - it seems to be game specific stuttering. I jumped into a practice game with 24 bots in Team Fortress 2 and didn't notice a single stutter.

Any other steps I can take?

A single GTX 680 would be underpowered for 2560x1440 for many games...
What GTX 680 model number do you have? how much Vram?

We also need to know what CPU you have, what speed its running at and how much system ram you have.

Right now with the info you have posted..
-->stuttering and crashing in certain games would be -normal- at 2560x1440 with higher settings, as that takes more Vram and horsepower than you appear to have available.

You should download the free Unigine Heaven 4.0 Benchmark  https://unigine.com/products/heaven/download/
And test for system performance with your hardware as its configured.

For some reason this forum is pruning the links I'm posting. I've attached idle temps and specs from Speccy below:

I agree the 680 won't play everything super smooth at Ultra settings at 2560x1440 - but this is occurring regardless of resolution. I turned settings to Low and ran the game at 1600X900 and I still saw the stuttering issue. It seems to be most prevalent whenever the game is loading any 3D asset into the game. There's a section of Heroes of the Storm where you character kind of "beams in" and there's visible stuttering.

Yeah, for some reason this forum doesn't like links. They work fine in the post preview, but disappear after I hit Submit Post.

You have great system hardware, but at stock clocks its underperforming

    As for your graphics....
A single GTX 680 2gig card is just destroyed at 2560x1440
*I run (2) GTX 680 2gig in SLI at only 1920x1980 and I have Vram and performance issues with some games and benchmarks at ultra settings.

For that killer CPU/MB setup you really need to add in (2) very high end cards (with 4gig Vram each) for running 2560x1440
And then crank up that CPU and RAM on your 2011 socket MB.

While it's not going to be the greatest performance, the 680 should be sufficient to keep you over 30FPS in most games at nearly maxed settings. I ran a single 760@ 2560x1440 for about a month, it managed to average 30-50FPS in most games, and 60-90 in SLI. With at least Team Fortress 2 running properly though, it doesn't sound like a hardware problem. If it were, it would manifest in every game.

I suspect it's a driver issue somewhere, maybe with the Nvidia HD audio controller driver. I've seen that cause stuttering and low performance before. Try going through our FAQ and see if it makes any difference: http://www.evga.com/support/faq/afmmain.aspx?faqid=59211. Also make sure you've got the Power Management setting in the Nvidia Control Panel set to "Prefer Maximum Performance". That should help with the dramatic swing in frame rates.

Jaeson - you know it's funny that you mention the HD audio driver. After I clean installed the nVidia beta drivers Windows looked up the nVidia HD audio drivers on it's own an installed them. Do you know of a way to get rid of them for good?

If you follow the FAQ, it tells you how to disable it semi-permanently so it won't come back on restart. Basically you'll disable the Nvidia High Definition Audio Controller that's on the same PCI Bus as your video card in the Windows Device Manager under System Devices. Just uninstalling the driver doesn't do it, and it gets reinstalled as you've noticed. Disabling it under System Devices basically shuts if off at the motherboard level, and when you do a clean driver install you'll notice the HD audio driver isn't even available anymore.

I'm no pc wiz by no means, but have you tried core parking. it drove me nuts for the longest time. I had plenty of power but still had that stuttering. disabled the parking of cpu cores and have NEVER had a problem since!

Yes and no. I think the majority of my stuttering fps problems were because of an issue Heroes of the Storm was having. But just last night I had a complete computer lockup. Graphics got green and pixelated. Had to power down and restart.

Double-checked to make sure all my case fans were running - they were.

Hypothetically, under load, would my GPU lock up my computer if my case fans weren't cooling? I'm trying to isolate this overheating problem.
