Re: Best Graphics Cards For The Money: April 2014 2014/04/13 21:27:17 (permalink)
"Clearly, the Radeon R7 260X is the price/performance card to beat under $200. Nvidia's GeForce GTX 750 Ti offers slightly more performance for considerably more money, so it's not really a good value play, except for gamers who are stuck with a low-end power supply they don't want to upgrade."

Says the 260X is $120 but i'm finding most around the 130-140 mark. It also states the 750ti is 160, but i see asus and evga about 150-155. So I'm not seeing how 20-25 dollars is a "considerably more money". It's a large pizza with a side. I also noted that there was no 750 non-ti be evaluated or 260 non-x.

On the  XFX 290X ENFC that they test, they stated 590 USD dollars on newegg (http://tinyurl.com/q2nse2t)This thing has been out of stock on NewEgg for awhile, so I looked it up on Amazon and it fetches an impressive 740 USD (http://tinyurl.com/p55x4ba). Well as i stated 590 sounds right but lets double check, I found the top 3 dealers of AMD is Asus, Sapphire, and Gigabyte, so I used the MEAN AVERAGE and found it to be ~740 USD so comparable to the XFX 290X ENFC.

The 780ti that they test stated 700 USD, (http://tinyurl.com/o3hh9d9)This thing I can't find on amazon or newegg in stock. It looks like a reference GPU so I used the MEAN AVERAGE between EVGA/Asus/MSI  of the stock reference card on amazon and found it to be ~710 USD.

So now we have the 290X to be 740 USD where the report says 590, and the 780ti to be 710 where the report says 700. Now I know that the 290x is being changed by bitminers, but even if that is true it still shows that the price for April  is no 590 but rather 740. Maybe after the bitcoin craze dies down it will return to 590.

So overall unimpressed by this article overall. It seems like biased or they didn't do enough research or they happened to catch the 290x at a good price range. Either way I am that bored and did about 20 minutes to research it and found different results... take it how you want.

    EDIT:
290X price is 620 USD Mean Average between 5 companies Gigabyte/Asus/Powercolor/MSI/Sapphire. My first quote is off due to me looking at Amazon's first quote and note all the companies on there offering the item. My apologies.

Even the high end MSI Lightening version of the R9 290X isn't $740, you pay a premium price of $699 for that model.

The one in the review was just a reference R9 290X, which can be had for about $580. Even BestBuy carry's a R9 290X for a little over $600... So the review seems fine IMO.

I just picked up a R9 290X used for $363... It's up to the consumer to find the best deal... It's more than just newegg and amazon that sell computer parts.

Not the ones in my state. They didn't have anything higher than a reference NVIDIA GTX 760

prices actually fluctuate more then you think guys.
They give you a link to amazon, and they are a fairly safe metric to go off of.

Their card they linked is out of stock

Asus: For some reason Amazon shows 780 USD, but they also have some for 600 (this may have thrown off my averages)
    http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-R9290X-4GD5-DDR5-Graphics-Card/dp/B00GBJQ24C/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1397462485&sr=8-2&keywords=290x+asus

Sapphire: Amazon shows 500-600 (amazons first quote is 700-800)
    http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-21226-00-40G/dp/B00FLMKQY2/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397462563&sr=1-5&keywords=290x+sapphire
    &
    http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Radeon-PCI-Express-Graphics-21226-00-53G/dp/B00GRNUNQU/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397462563&sr=1-3&keywords=290x+sapphire

Gigabyte: Amazon shows 730 (now this one has one guy selling it at 500 but the other two are 700ish)
    http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Radeon-GDDR5-Graphics-GV-R929XD5-4GD-B/dp/B00FONISY8/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397462681&sr=1-2&keywords=290x+Gigabyte

MSI: Amazon shows 600 (again amazon first quote is 700)
    http://www.amazon.com/MSI-R9-290X-4GD5-Graphics/dp/B00GIAXVKM/ref=sr_1_6?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397462681&sr=1-6&keywords=290x+Gigabyte

    PowerColor: Amazon shows 674
    http://www.amazon.com/PowerColor-AXPowerColor-290X-4GBD5-MDHG-OC/dp/B00G5BEBVM/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397462872&sr=1-4&keywords=r9+290x+powercolor

    VisionTek: Amazon shows 850
    http://www.amazon.com/Visiontek-Genuine-Radeon-290X-GDDR5/dp/B00J9UDOU0/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1397462823&sr=8-5&keywords=r9+290x+visiontek

So I agree 600 sounds more like it should be the normal. It was my fault that I just looked at the first price on the page and not the rest of the stores. But the 290x still radically changes from 500 to 850. So again MEAN Average with all the above, I also checked to make sure I saw different stores and not the first quote this time... and we get.... 659 (I only used the 500 USD estimate from sapphire and not the 600). If we remove VisionTek's price because it is so bizarrely high we get 620 which is more in the ballpark.

Again my apologies for looking at first quotes and not all the other stores. I'll update my first post with the new numbers.

Best Buy's website hasn't been solely representative of the stores in years. They have "outside vendors" or some such nonsense same as lots of other sites now.

Yep, and the only availability is "Ship to store" or buy online.

    We were both right?

    The R9 295?

I love my Sapphire R9 290X, got it used for $363 shipped. Can't find a game it can't handle... Playing Crysis 3 on it is pretty damn fun.
