The BOINC Pentathlon is the first cross-project competition for teams in the BOINC world and will run for two weeks. Participating teams are offered various challenges:
  • Gaining as many active crunchers as possible within your team to take part in the Pentathlon
  • Switching precisely from one project to another (Pending credits!)
  • Well-planned resource sharing when participating in disciplines that are running simultaneously
  • Planning and discussing a strategy within the own team
  • Dynamical adjustment of strategies, as disciplines are always confirmed just a few days before they start
  • Choose your goal: try to win the BOINC Pentathlon or concentrate on the single disciplines
  • CPU vs. GPU disciplines

The BOINC Pentathlon will start on 5th of May 2014, 00:00 UTC, and will end on 19th of May 2014, 00:00 UTC – so it will run for exactly 14 days.  * 5/5 0:00 UTC equates to 5/4 5:00pm PDT*

Every discipline will run for 5 days and is going to be announced 5 days (Sprint: 3 days) before it will start via Blog (Feed Twitter Facebook ) - therefore no team will know the entire sequence of the Pentathlon right from the beginning!

The Marathon discipline spans the duration of the whole Pentathlon, while the Sprint discipline runs for 3 days and the other disciplines run for 5 days. Hence different disciplines may be performed in a row or simultaneously.

Projects:

Marathon - theSkyNet POGS (5/5/14 0:00 UTC - 5/19/14 0:00 UTC)

Natural Sciences - Rosetta@home (5/8/14 0:00 UTC - 5/13/14 0:00 UTC)

Sprint - Collatz Conjecture (5/10/14 0:00 UTC - 5/13/14 0:00 UTC)

Opolis are you going to set which of the 5 Disciplines we tackle or are we going to do all 5?

    In!
I think the teams that do the best run all 5 and the individuals within the team run to their strengths.

    Thanks Opolis!

Each registered team gets a vote on each of the 5 disciplines.  The one project with the most votes under each discipline is the one to be crunched by all.  Have a look here at the choices for each discipline for this year's contest.  Some of the disciplines overlap during the contest, so teams choose whether to stick to one project or if they'll have better luck by switching to the next project.

EDIT: Just want to add our team has participated in this contest the last couple of years, and it's a lot of fun.  I'm looking forward to it!

i would love to help with my meager equipment and anything else i can come up with between now and then, I won't be able to swich tasks very much during the week and my gpu likely won't be all that much help but i still wanna play :)

I certainly hope you will join us regardless of your equipment, that would be awesome!
I'm bringing my newest rig to the race. A friend gave it to me to crunch with. It's a Dell single core Sempron with integrated graphics. It's that skinny form factor that Dell made and I can't even put a gpu card in there even if the power supply was big enough. But it will be crunching one work unit at a time during the race.

If your rig is the one in your MODS RIGS, it's a great crunching machine.

Everyone's contribution counts, no matter how small or large.  We need all the crunchers we can get!  As planetclown said, each team gets a vote on which project they want for each category.  I can make another thread when voting and registration are open where each of us can put in our votes for what we would like to run, and the projects that get the most votes will be our final vote submitted on the seti.germany site.  Each project will run for only limited time so we will have to switch between them.  Some projects will overlap, so each teammate will have to think about what runs better on their rig and when to switch, or run projects side by side.

You got it, I think that is the general tactic.

I was just thinking about this.  I missed out last year because of the move back from Okinawa.
Opolis, if you registered last year, are getting email updates on it for this year?

I'm starting to run some projects on the Pentathlon list that I've never tried before. So far, eOn on the CPU and Moowrapper on the GPU. All good so far.
It was this race that got me interested in new projects last year and it's happening again.

No, I have not received any emails from them.  Someone mentioned it in the new thread in the folding contest section and I thought "totally forgot about that, I wonder when it starts."  So far it looks like the website isn't updated from last year except for the dates and project list.  The registration form doesn't work yet either.

By then I should have another GPU to thrown in the mix as well.

Okay!  seti.germany sent me an email and it looks like the site is updated for this year.  I will make a separate thread where we can vote on the projects we want for each discipline and then I will use the outcome to sign us up!

Good call, Yodap!  Skynet POGS has been announced as the marathon project, which spans the entire contest.  I wonder if they'll release the optimized application before then.

Nice CPU, Orange.  Bringing in some heavy artillary...I'm excited for you!

    Thx Mate^^
So Skynet POGS will be the marathon, going side by side with the other 5 and 3 day disciplines right?
Interesting, I may have an advantage here, running a small handful of anklebiters, easier to run parallel projects.
Never did any for Skynet, all I know is they have nice badges

Yep, Skynet runs the entire length, and the others will run aside it.
So we either have then just 2 projects running side by side or maybe even three or 4.

So a question to all you pros: HT on or off with it. This may be the only project I´m gonna run. All I have is my 2p intel with 2 E5 2660s
edit: with HT on and 32 cores running I´m getting the full multi on the cpu. So my question boils down to: is it worth dropping cores (or HT) altogether to  really speed up things ?
I first need to get up my BOINC runtime to be able to build up a nice bunker ready for dropping on the 5th in the morning over here.

Aye Mr. B Nice to meet you

Just downloaded a batch of the Skynet WU's to have a look at them
I received "fitsedwrapper 3.40" Dunno if those are the one we will get during the Marathon.
    On a i7 980 @3,33Ghz, they vary mostly from 2-2,5hrs, cpu only.
They put WCG wu's on "Wait" while they let Astroids run (0,01CPU +GPU)

My personal experience with HT is that the total gain with running with HT off, is marginal if any.
However, with HT off, the cpu tend to run a bit cooler.
A while back, we ran some huge LLR's, roughly 100hrs pr wu. Here we was recommended to run with HT off, due to possible CPU cache buffer overflow.
I will evaluate during the run, but I will leave it on for starters. My CPU's are stock clocked, so temp is rarely any issue.
Besides, my climate is cold compared to most, so I have all the cooling I could wish for right outside my window.

Very nice of you to grind this one with us

    Thanks Orange!
For while I had set it to "only" using 24 threads instead of 32, and things had only marginally sped up from just over 2h to just under 2h. Can´t do any ocing on those  cpus anyway. So I´ll just let them run full speed on all threads at 2.7 Ghz.
Most of my current tasks seem to land in an indirect bunker as my copilot on these is from Seti Germany.
So I´ll let them run without shutting down the network connection for a few more hours, so I can up my Boinc runtime on that computer. Right now its only @ ~50%.

I'm running them on a C2Q @ 3.2 that doesn't support HT and am seeing roughly the same times as Orange. I just moved some to my 2600k with HT on @ 4.4 and the reported time is less, from 1:38 - 1:52. I'll let it run for a while, let the Enigma tasks finish, and report back.

    This tactics might backfire.
The only two "Official" Challenges I've participated in, had this rule:
"Work units downloaded before start time will not be accounted for"
This was a Clear rule With Prime Grid's Super Secret Challange, and the recent Shakespear Birthday Party challange.
So, we will most likely get an exact time, and WU's downloaded before this time, will not Count in the Challange.

I also suspect they have a big pile of WU's in the back, possibly special ones. I would be surprised if they are not prepared for this event, running out of WU's just before a Marathon would be silly/ unlogical.

However, I have set my preferences to "Obtain work for atleast 2 days, and 1 day in addition, just to be certain to have enough WU's. If they run empty in a middle of an event, they usually solve this pritty quick, but With 2 days of work, you are fairly safe.
Unlike folding, If you abort a WU, they get "Recycled", they are not lost, some others will get them.

I have a problem of confirming this Pentathlon rule about download time, I'm on my way abroad, and will be on a boat and pritty unavailable untill mid day saturday, so if someone can look into this, and perhaps confirm, it would be great.

However, I have a good feeling about this Challenge, I think we will kick some butt here

Orange, the problem with that theory is the fact that the Prime Grid challenges are ran by the project itself and can track when a task was downloaded using their own servers to track the download times. The Pentathlon is being ran by a team, Seti Germany, with no access to the servers. I seriously doubt they have any way to track when a task was downloaded.
