Hello everyone,

As mentioned in the title I am having a problem trying to obtain the temperatures that other people are reporting for this card such as running at 72C when under full load at stock settings. Originally the card could not even hit its base clock without throteling this was also with fan speeds at 100%. I then switch out the thermal paste with Arctic Silver 5 as the original stock paste turned out to be a huge mess. This has allowed me to achieve base clock speeds. Though I still cannot get the temperature bellow 80C with 100% fan speeds, my card has an ASIC quality of 67.1, any help that you could provide would be great.

Thank you in advance.

What case do you have? That might be the issue.
Also what are Idle temps and your room temp?

My case is the Antec 300 two, my idle temperatures are around 26-27 C. And my room temperature ranges from 22 - 25 C. I cannot control my room temperatures as they are controlled building wide in my apartment.

How is your case fans arranged?  Looking at that case, it does not look very cooling friendly.  Looks like it only comes with a rear and top fan standard with optional front and side fans.  ACX cooler is much more sensitive to case type and fan arrangement.  It dumps most of its hot air back into the case and relies on the case fans to exhaust it.  That's a mid-tower too, so that doesn't help either.  One way to test is take the side panel off and see if temps improve, if they do, your case is the issue.

Temps improve very slight by maby about 1 degree, though that is only noticilbe becuase the card will on average boost 20 Mhz more.

Can you please describe your case fan arrangement. I would recommend a front and side fan as intake and the top and back fans as exhaust

Currently i have a side fan pulling in fresh air straight onto the GPU, and it is exhausting through the back and top. The front of the case is open mesh, which allows the exhaust fans to pull air passively through the filtered intake. Also my power supply is isolated as it draws in air through a dedicated filtered intake on the bottom and exhausts it out through the back.

Ok another way we can tell if it's your airflow is by taking off the side panel and taking a fan and pointing it straight at the gpu. A box fan or any other large fan should do the trick

I already tried that it lowers the temperature by about 2 degrees or there abouts but it stays at 80C due to the card uses that to boost itself, maby i need to really the Arctic silver 5 again and put a little bit less on and see if it is seated better.

How did you apply the thermal paste?

I first spent 40 Minuets cleaning out the mess that was there from the factory the entire chip was covered even the SMD's around the die. I then put a single dot in the middle then pressed the heat sink down. I may have put a little to much or to little on. The reason i used the dot method is because AS5 is conductive and I don't want to fry my chip. :P

Usually people use a pea size to rice sized(uncooked) dot of thermal paste

Ya I may reapply thermal past I put about what i would call a couple grains of rice, well practice makes perfect right.   :D

Shouldn't affect temps much to put a couple grains size on. It sounds like something else is the culprit.

I re-aplied the thermal paste about 2 hours ago this time putting even less on, and the temps still go to 80C though they are more controllable from how it appears to me. Instead of increasing to 80C in about 12 seconds it takes about 1 minute now, hopefully after the 200 hours of curing time it will be even better and one other thing is that the absent temperature in my apartment is 25C, not really the best thing ever but can't do anything about that.

Well after doing a burn in of 2 hour at around a forced temprature of 85-90C I can now maintain a base frequency of 1005 Mhz will staying at a constant 80C and 60% fan speeds. This is the best results I have had, if any of the information about artic silver is true I should be able to expect and adition 2-5 C drop after 200 hours of heavy use. This sgould allow the card to maitain its full boost speeds. Time to wait.....

Thank you all for you help

Well after extensive testing I believe I have finally found the problem. It appears there may be a defect with my card or maby it is just because the ASIC of my card is 67.1, but it looks like my card trys to force as much voltage through the chip as possible. Even when it would be running at its stock 967 Mhz it would be running at 1.167V. This kind of makes a good deal of sense due to even if i under clocked the card it would still some how manage to get to 90C. But as shown in the screen shot bellow the card is now running above its original boost clock and maintains temperatures bellow 79C while in Heaven benchmark at a 20C ambient. To achieve this I needed to force the power target well bellow 100%, due to if i just try and use the temperature target to get the temps i want the card would throttle back to 866 Mhz and run at 1.167V. and still manage to get to 79C. So i would much rather get extra performance out of the card and get decent temps, then get worse performance and worse temps. Don't you agree?

I have the same problem, EXCEPT> I took my fans off to put a waterblock on before finding out it doesnt fit.. ****. Cleaned(was a pain like you said) reapplied arctic silver 5 and my temps are like.. 20C hotter.... not even kidding. I didnt use much paste... im gonna try the spread with CC method and see... i also changed my fans as i added watercooling. Have CM 600T with 2 high static pressure fans pushing colt air from top through rad, front, mesh side(DIRECTLY in front of fan intakes on gpu) and an exhuast out the back with isolated PS. I cant mount the fans to push air through the rad out of the case because of clearence issues... so thats how i set it up. The one side panel with the fan is mesh...

Mobo idles at 30C and card idles at 40C...under load it shoots up to max setting (85C) in like 20 seconds then throttles. Ill update after i change out the paste again.
