DIY LN2 POT

Not sure who remembers my last pot, which was just a copper sweat cap & pipe, I decided to improve upon the design.  The pot lacked any real mass at all to combat rapid temperature swings.  here

That being said I looked up my local copper supplier and got a solid copper plug, 2" diameter, by 2" thick.

Then I took a 2" sweat cap, and cut off the top of it to make a lip for the hold down bracket.

Not much to it is there? Nope.

Now to increase the surface area, while still retaining overall quantity of mass:

Marked out 1/4 20 holes and threaded it.

All the holes go over 1.8" down into the core.  I can't tell you how long that took to drill almost 2 inches in, but it took almost a day for that task itself. (just your average drill press was used)

Then it all came down to soldering everything together:

Then we clean it up a little and lap it:

Hard to see, but all those holes are threaded to increase surface area.

Drilling the hole for the Thermal Probe:

Inserting the Thermal Probe:

Nice job nate, this must be what you were talking about in chat last night?  My newest revision is still on the drawing boards, but I will send you some sneak peaks when we begin construction.  Good job man!

How much this thing cost you? And more importantly how much would it cost me

Those temps look good. -60c is much better than what you were

LN2 is the ONE THING that is missing from the whole equation, this was temps with DICE.  I measured the actual DICE chunks by sticking that very same thermal probe into the chunks and they measured -72°C.

Considering the 10°C increase in temps from natural temps of DICE, I would say this pot is uber success.  The previous pot did I think -40ish°C
If I only had a dewar id be cooking with gas....err liquefied gas :P

that temp was taken with the thermal probe wedged between the bottom part of the pot (not the part that touches the CPU, but that semi-round area) and the foam that insulates the cpu.  I would imagine a more accurate reading (and colder) would be read from the hole that I just put in the actual base of the CPU.

The really nice thing is that I couldn't "cold bug" the Q6600.  I could just completely fill up the pot with dice chunks and walk away for a few minutes to go to the bathroom, or tend to a crying baby etc...

everyone cares about the bottom line eh?

the copper core was around $50  The pipe you have to check with your local pluming supply.  The sweat cap (what is now the collar) was $7.00 at Lowes.

    Retail price $250

    Evga member special $200

Get it into production, and plenty of profit left over for you-know-who!

Also, seriously you should apply for patents on your creations.

we'll have to talk offline about that one ;)

This is 775 specific... BUT, if you look at the mounting plates  you can see multiple holes so lets say it also works for the i7 socket.

That is savage! Have you tried/planned to use LN2 on it instead of DICE? It'd be pretty interesting...
What did you OC the CPU to during the testing? And how hot did the northbridge get?

Just curious about how you stop condensation from forming around the cpu and on the back of the board. Ive never read up on extreme cooling so I have no idea how they stop the condensation from happening.
