In 4 to 5 years, Amazon will deliver your order within 30 minutes by Drone. Called Amazon "Prime Air". Octocopters will pick up packages in small yellow buckets at Amazon’s fulfillment centers, and whiz through the air to deliver items to individual customers 30 minutes after they hit the “buy” button online at Amazon.com. I'm curious how they'll home in on a destination address. Sure, machine vision may have made some big steps between now and then, but I still think they'll need some sort of specialized receptacle or homing beacon to get to a front door; GPS just isn't enough.

I don't see it happening soon because there's gonna be lots of planning over how to combat rough weather and thieves/hackers who try to intercept the drones.

I knew I wasn't hallucinating when I thought drone use for commercial gain is against the law. It's illegal still until 2015 apparently under FAA regulations. Primary issues being use of a drone above 400 feet and use of a drone for purposes of commerce. The new law fixes that in 2015 though. Read about it a year ago or so. http://www.flyingmag.com/news/congress-open-us-skies-drones-three-years

I wouldn't write it off so quickly. At the very least, it's a way to push our current boundaries on with research with autonomy and control systems.

I think it would be absolutely fantastic, if it weren't beyond the realm of impossible for most locations. The nearest Amazon distribution hub to me is Allentown PA. I'm pretty sure a drone is not going to make the trip from PA to NH in 30 minutes. Second, my address is wrong in nearly every mapping system there is. So if I ordered something via drone delivery, I'd end up having to pick it up out of the woods about 500 yards down the road from my house.

Because I would want to stand right under some mighty sharp blades in order to grab my pizza.. I'd rather wait a bit longer and have it delivered by something that can't decapitate me unless they're insane and are wielding a machete.

So I wonder how they fly in 30mph+ winds? Here in Texas the wind is almost always blowing hard out of the North or the South. Then there are the severe storms we have in spring, and 110F with dust devils flying all around in the summer. Just wondering how stable they are? I use to fly r/c planes and they didn't like the wind very much. Not to mention they will have to fly 50mi. to get to my house.

clo007, Let alone entering restricted airspace and such. So, what about these being hijack/reprogrammed, for evil, and civilians dont live in restricted airspace? And how would you shoot these down if need be, in a non-military area with civilians, Im sure these things could carry enough C4 or worse to cause alot of damage and or chaos....
