I was wondering when and what Nvidia will be releasing in early 2014? I'm looking to upgrade, and I currently have a GeForce GTX 670 SC and love it, but it's time to move on now. I'm specifically looking at the $400 price point which usually offers to the 2nd to the top single core GPU.
I'm assuming it will be called the 800 series. I see AMD just released the Radeon 290. I've had Nvidia cards for a long time, and the last time I had a Radeon was the Radeon 9800 Pro. After that, it's been all Nvidia cards.
I'm hoping Nvidia will release something, since I'm used to Nvidia, but I'm open to going back to AMD if need be. I'm looking for a card that will allow me to run pretty much any game on it's highest mode. I specifically play Battlefield 3, 4 and SWTOR, and I'll be getting TitanFall, when it's released next year.
Thanks in advance.

Some rumors have circulated that the 800 series will be released 1H14, but the problem with those rumors is that 20nm won't be ready until 2H14. nVidia could release Maxwell first as a 28nm GPU, but it would have the same performance and size as a GK110. Then only later would we see Maxwell as intended (think GK104 vs GK110). I wouldn't expect something better than the 780 Ti for a year if you plan on waiting.

Note, nVidia is already countering the new cards from AMD. The rebranded AMD cards are now fighting lower priced nVidia cards. And the new top-tier AMD card is now facing the 780 Ti. AMD will have to do another launch to stump nVidia. nVidia has been carrying the lead ever since they launched GK110.

Typically, probably early april-ish and youll see the 880 and 870 cards with the 860 to drop early june, judging by other releases, but this is only my opinion. Of course the card you have should keep you happy and hitting that target you want in most games for awhile yet, since theres very few games as taxing as BF, Crysis and Metro....unless your going triple monitor, higher res or both.

Well my upgrade will be bought with tax return money.  I'll wait a couple of months, but after that I'll either get the fastest Nvidia card at $400 or AMD.  Does Nvidia have an answer for the Radeon 290 right now at the same price point?  I know the 780 Ti is faster, but I'm looking at the $400 price point.  I've set up an upgrading solution that really seems to work for me very well.  I upgrade my whole rig every 4 years, and I upgrade my video card every 2 years.  So, this rig I have now, I built in 2012 and next in 2014, I'll be getting a new card and then in 2014 I'll be upgrading the whole thing again including a card.  This is has been working very well for me for the last 2 upgrades.  Sure I'd love to get the 780 Ti, but it's just too much and honestly, it's not needed.

I only have one monitor, a 24 inch Asus LCD 1920x1080, and as I said before, I want my games to run at their highest possible resolution.  I understand that I might not be able to run Battlefield 4 at it's highest.  I don't know yet, since I don't own the game.  BF4 will be one of my Christmas presents.  I played the Beta, but it didn't run that great.  I don't know if that was the beta or the game itself.  I understand if I can't run BF4 at Ultra levels on my current 670 SC, but I want to make darn sure that I'll be able to do that on whatever I upgrade to next.

Now I know I could get the 770 GTX next year if the 870 isn't out yet, but honestly, I'd rather get a Radeon 290 over a 770, because of how much faster the 290 is.  I'd really rather stick with Nvidia, since I have for a long time, and I've been a loyal EVGA user since either the GeForce 3 or GeForce 4 Ti4400.  Even if it was the GF4 and not the 3, I've been a customer for a long time.  I know that, at least in the past anyway, Nvidia has had the best drivers, while AMD's track record hasn't been that hot.  That may have changed in the last couple years, I'm not sure.  Anyway, I hope I can just stay with Nvidia and EVGA!!!

Just a single monitor, I just hope BF4 runs as smoothly as BF3 does on my rig.

Looking at the benchmarks, it looks to me like the only real competition of the Radeon 290 is the GeForce GTX 780.  I wonder if the 780 might drop again to around $400 or $450?  Probably not I'm betting.  Sigh.  I'm reading the reviews at Newegg, and it appears the R290 runs hot (which I already knew), but it appears to not be as reliable as, well virtually ANY EVGA card.

Looks like I found a rumor that looks like it might be true. There are a couple sites saying Nvidia will be releasing Maxwell in the 1st Qtr. of 2014. Looks like the new 20nm process will be delayed, but I'm totally fine with using Maxwell at a 28nm process. http://videocardz.com/45403/nvidia-t...ell-in-q1-2014

I'll admit, I'd rather get a Nvidia card since I've had so many with very few problems, but at the very worst I'll end up getting a R9 290. I guess that wouldn't be too horrible.

I'm not sure why you'd take what he said months ago as being true...considering he wasn't very accurate about the rest of the stuff he posted.

I agree. He hasn't been very close in any predictions. Also, why would you buy a new series card on the 28nm process when you have that now? I doubt even the 880 (let's just call it that for now) would be much of any improvement on the 780ti. If it was any improvement it would be very slight, and it would probably launch at the same price point as the 780ti. All of this is just my guess, but I personally would either just wait for the 20nm tech or just get a top-of-the-line 780ti when they launch more non-reference coolers.

Re: GeForce GTX 800 Series Release Date?? 2013/11/27 10:11:27 (permalink)
My whole dilemma is a little different but similar. I own EVGA GTX 760 FTW 4GB and BenQ XL2420TE. I went with 4GB cuz I know that 2560 x XXXX 120Hz + monitors will be hitting in 2014. I went with XL2420TE over XL2720Z because I knew that I would want to upgrade monitor in 2014. I just want whatever scenario will get me the highest framerate in Skyrim @ 1080p now and even 2560 x XXXX 120Hz+ later.

I am a beta tester for Elder Scrolls Online but I am highly disappointed in the quality of the "megaserver" so far. I have over 800 hours of gameplay on Skyrim and so it will most likely continue to be the game I play most.

To make matters even more complicated the prices are lowered on GTX 770 but not GTX 760...yet...and GTX 770 4GB SLI is still too far out of reach for me financially. Do I get 2nd GTX 760 4GB and SLI and wait for GTX 800s to hit? Or sell my current 760 and go for GTX 770 2GB SLI only to want to upgrade as early as April?!

My hopes are with the GTX 800 series that we may see a 384-bit/3GB+ VRAM @ around $300. I tried to go AMD and absolutely hated it. Went back to "old faithful" i7-3770K + ASRock Z77 OC Formula. Haswell "refresh" around the corner as well as DDR4 RAM. LOL, craziness!

I like the idea of a single card scenario over SLI any day but what framerate will that get me on Skyrim vs. 760 SLI ?

I seriously doubt high end desktop Maxwell cards are being launched in February. A few reasons why: 1) Usually there are plenty of rumors flying around right a month before launch. 2) Low end laptop GPU's have launched first the past several series (we should see 810M or whatever soon). 3) High end desktop cards tend to launch in March-June or October-November time frames. They also just recently refreshed the GK110 (780 Ti) back in November.

I would regret buying it if GTX 880 hits in next few months or so. But if you got money to burn I say go for it!
