Hi there people!

I have good news. I have solved the rattle problem in my 780 classified ( I think that this should work in regular acx cooler too)!!!

I have taken some photos to show I did. And if i did you can do it too.
First undo the 5 screws that hold the cooler to the card(four in the “center of the picture” and 1 in the left/down side of the picture left to the sli rubber dust cover.

Next slowly rotate back and forward the card to separate the card from the cooler.

Now, with the cooler of the card pass your finger on the fins of the cooler and find out if are any fins loose that will create the rattle at some rpm of the fans. In my case I find that the fins closer to the monitor ports were very loose. I´m pointing them with my screwdriver.

Them I had some thermal tape around here and decided to hold those fins with the thermal tape (not thermal pads).

I cut some of it (0,5cm X 3,5cm) and placed it on the side of the fins were they are “closed” so no airflow would be restricted.

In case you wanted to Know what thermal tape [

Then I reapplied them tim (I’m trying out the Phobya Nanogrease Extreme and I got 4ºC off my max temp)

And put it all together and the rattle was gone! I tested this with the precision X, seting it to manual and incremented 1% each time( from 29% to 100%) to see if the rattle was gone and it was gone.
I choose this meted to see if it work and it did, but I don’t know if the thermal tape will hold the fins  forever because I don´t know if the resonance is strong enough to dislodge the tape. If it is I might use some adhesive thermal conductive paste to “glue” those fins.

Now I can hear some small noises(very very small and definitely not any rattle) at some rpm I suspect there are some more fins loose, but nothing compared to those that I marked and fix, and I think they are near the power connector to the card. Or the ones that I fixed are still a little loose on the right side of this photo, near the plastic cover:

Can some forum moderator pass this information to someone that can do something in the asseble line to prevent this hapening to other grafics cards? (can i have a Job at EVGA for this fix?.....a grafics card?....a T-shirt?....no? something...? )

I hope you all can solve it like I did and if you have any questions just ask. If you try this please tell me if it worked here at this post.

I cant post a link until I have enough posts, but can you please go to youtube and type in

'Evga 780 Classified at about 1500 rpms, fan faulty'

I have put up a short clip, and if you click on my name, you will see another video uploaded with the system in idle.

Can you please let me know if this is what you fixed?
If not, is it bad, worth returning?

Yes you can RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) but make sure you did have registration within 30 days of the purchase date for Warranty?
If you not happy with noise and If cannot fixed then don't and do contract EVGA Customer Support to RMA!!

Hi wolfie81.
I just saw your vid and it looks like the same problem that i had on mine. But could be something else too. If it is the fins loose....no it is not bad( the card wont die from it)....just very anoying. Try to slow down one fan with your finguer(in the center of the fan to not hurt yourself) and see if the noise stops. If it does probably you have the same problem as me. If the noise continues after slowing down each fan with your finger try to stop completely one fan and if the noise stops its probable the fan.

The noise is constant or it cames and goes at diferent % of rpm?

thank you for your response, the noise will come and go, depending on the rpm. After 1500 rpm itll disappear and then reappear about 70% speed before it disappears again towards 100%

Not a prob man !

Them it most likely be the same problem as mine....the loose fins.

Now....you have 3 options:

1:Rma it like coolmistry says

2: If you can live with noise, let it be.

3: try to fix it like i did (if you had aplyed TIM in the past you will be ok just dont use any conductive TIM)

I´m going to have lunch...so dont "panic" if i dont respond soon

Let me know of the outcome.

Ill love to hear someone that DOES not have this problem so we know its not the 'common' sound among all and some are just more sensitive to it.
If the problem remains on my replacement, returned card ill apply the fix in this thread.

Re:ACX rattle / noise problem fix 2013/09/13 09:07:26 (permalink)
Nice one.

I infact have the same noise ( i havnt seen the vid but i already know what ur talking about) and i get it at 70% fan speed and now and then at around 1500 rpm aswell.
For now i skip those RPM's.

Now im going to replace my TIM soon anyway(when i can be bothered ot do it) beocuse my temps are high, i suspect i have a hot running chip but i might aswell try (and hope) that a TIM replacment with some NT-H1 will help.
When i do this i was planing on checking the heatsink anyway becouse i suspected it might be metal burs left over from the fin cutting process.
However loose fins was also a possiblity and you have just confirmed this.
A big THANKS from me atleast. I know where to look now insteado f searhcign blindly.

As for RMA's, this is such a wide spread issue that RMA'ing could simply lead to yet another card with the same problem not to mention going through the silicon lottery again.

I decided not to RMA my card when i got it becouse i realyl cba to go throug hthre process. I recently went through a month long RMA argument about a case i 'was' going to get from a retailer and it totaly put me of trying to RMA this card. Nothign against EVGA, or the retailer i bought this card from, i just didnt want to go through an RMA wait. And i stil ldont :P

So...
Yes well done i was hoping som1 would have the balls to try fix it themselfs. problem for me is ..i have no thermal tape so ill have to try somthign else. Maybe just some thick doublesided tape + light card, for regidity. Who knows.

If you do give the fix a go, do post here of the results for those who have RMA'ed their cards yet still have this issue.

I just dont know if this is a widespread issue. Are we the only ones complaining? Every review site had these cards as silent..

Re:ACX rattle / noise problem fix 2013/09/13 13:27:08 (permalink)
Unfortunatly what 1 person considers silent can be totaly different to another.

I had a really loud Rig prior to my current one. it was a Dell XPS 720 H2C, all of them were loud, u can find vids on youtube. That said, i stil ldont consider this card silent or quiet. To me silent or quiet is just that..i shouldnt hear it when at load unless its ragging along at 100% fan speed.
Now the rattle would be nice ot get rid of so i will try the fix when i get around to it. But i also find the huming/resonance/motor sound from the fans rather noticable above 50% speed, and since i have a hot runnign GPU, im always above 50% speed when gaming. So its deffinatly not silent.

Unfortunatly pulling apart a fan itself is easier said than done and even if it were easy its likely not somthing that can be tweeked at home. So im just gunna deal with it.
For reference this is my card
http://sdrv.ms/14SQLRg
I made the vid a while back around the 20th of august.
Its best to wear headphones to properly hear the sound as its hard to hear over the ambient 'hiss' in the vid. In person the room and the rig is almost silent (when the GPU is idle), my old digital cam corder is just ...well its crap tbh :P Oh and i was talking quietly as ppl were asleep in the next room, i done the recording at night to reduce the chance of ambient noise getitng in the way.

Hey, I had the same issue, was virtually the same fix, but i also found the fan cable on the rear acx fan of the card isnt fastened down the same as the front one and was slightly rubbing on the fan. mine was very obnoxious https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVx9xgsKOpY , but now its fine.

I have same issue unfortunately :/ It makes me almost crazy.
I'm gtx 770 w/ acx user and gonna send it next Monday for rma.
I dont wanna use one with ACX cooler anymore.
So, is it possible to change my card to another model using reference blower type cooler like '02G-P4-3771-KR' or something else after I send my card for rma?

They will send you an acx version. The latest acx coolers should not make this noise so you will be fine. Or just try to make this fix...is up to you.

Best of luck

So done my own version of the fix using double sided tap + cardboard for regidety.

The fins for me were loose in the same place but ALSO at the power connectors.

Anyway the rattles have gone. no suprise there.
The'humming' or resonance by the fans is ever so slightly better but still very much audable at certain RPMs. The 3 screw holding the fan to the heatsink on one of my fans were a tad to loose so i tightened them, may have helped.

I also replaced the TIM with NT-H1. Unfortunatly it did not improve temps, if anything im running 1 or 2c hotter, could just be margin for error. Though NT-H1 doesnt have a break in period it does tend to improve after a day or 2 so bassicaly temps are the same :(
Anyway temps running valley on loop were hitting 75-77c before and were at 77-78c now. Room temp 21.5c both times. Fans at 85%. Running at 1256mhz on core with 1.175v.

Directed to EVGA:
The way the fins on ur heatsink are linked together is crap imo. The ones that link ok are fine, but the ones in the 2 places i mentioned above are VERY loose. Ether you need to figure a different way to structure the heatsink or u need to impove quality control. Im not going to go through RMA becouse im not paying even more money for P&P to ur EU center (iirc its in germany). I'd also point out that atleast one of the 2 fans on my card 'humm'/'resonate' so again ..quality control.

I have a GTX 760 FTW, and I've noticed a slight rattle when the fan is spinning down from being under heavy load.   It only lasts a second or two, and then stops as the fan levels off to idle speeds.   I wasn't sure if I should be concerned about this, but as long as it just happens like it currently does, I'm not going to worry about it.   Glad to see it's not an issue specific to my system.
