I can play Max Payne 3 with a core overclock of +160 and memory anywhere between +200-250 yet Tomb Raider seems to crash quite frequently when I overclock my card. I can get +150 on the core but around +50 on the memory. (Sometimes even less for both, it's very much hit and miss). I should note that MOST of the time it runs ok when everything is at stock I'm just curious if overclocks can differ that much depending on the game?

If one game is more graphically demanding than another, then yes.  An example for me is with 1 of my 670's, I can only OC to a +13mhz on the core.  This is fine running some benches like Valley or Heaven and even a few game like BF3 or MP3.  But when I use that same 13mhz OC on Tomb Raider or Crysis3, it will crash.  Both those games with very high/ultra settings are more graphically demanding.  If I just use stock core clocks on those 2 games, no crashes, everything runs great.  So where you think that your +160 on the core is stable, it's probably a bit too much to be 100% stable.

Ah that's great thanks. So are you saying that the more graphically demanding a game is, the less stable it is with a higher overclock?  It never artifacts, I have to ctrl alt delete to see "..... has stopped responding"

Not exactly.  More like if you're OC'ing and testing that OC with say Valley bench and you are stable at a +160mhz core.  It doesn't necessarily mean you'll be stable with that same OC when playing a game that is more graphically demanding than the Valley bench was.  I would guess that if you backed down on your OC a bit more, you'll find that perfect OC that will then run anything stable.  Anything currently that is.

Sounds like you're right on the edge of stable to unstable.  Probably a bit under your +160 will be just right.  Whatever the next lower 13mhz increment is.  Maybe 26mhz.

I'll have a go at +140. It's weird because that original overclock is completely stable in MP3 and I played Tomb Raider for an hour at +160 on the core (nothing on the memory). I can't overclock the memory a lot of the time as it just crashes. Seems strange to me-trying to get a balance between core and memory. Do I need to lower my core  a lot to get a decent memory overclock and are they equally influential as each other?

I thought it was like this... Find your stable highest core, then find your stable highest memory. Seems as though the higher the core the lower the memory has to be, in my case anyway

Typically you can go a bit higher on the core if you don't go as high on the mem.  It's up to you what you want.  My suggestion would be to try the higher core with lower mem and save that to a profile.  Then create another profile the other way around.  Maybe even a 3rd profile with something in the middle.  Then play TR again while monitoring FPS and GPU usage and see which of the profiles yields you the best performance with no crashes.

Ahh I didn't know that, everyone seems to get much higher overclocks on their memory with less on the core. The highest I got on the memory whilst my core was at +160 was only +75 - that was in MLL. I'll have a play around and save profiles, thanks.

Just annoying as I've had the card for a few weeks and thought I'd found a stable point... guess not!

As lousy as 1 of my cards are for OC'ing, I could always use a +13 OC on the core.  Then when Crysis3 came along, I always crashed until I tried just using stock clocks.  Then I found the same was true for TR and now even Far Cry3.  Those 3 games are only stable for me using stock clocks.  Anything else I play I can use my measley +13mhz.  lol

lol that extra 13mhz ... Yeah FC3, BF3 (someone told me not to overclock on that one though), Metro Last Light and Tomb Raider are a real pain in the ass for me because the clocks are different across those games
