Hi everyone, Still a i7 920 with X58 fanboy. I consider since the first i7 upgrading, but I always found that OC this i7 is awesome for my use. The problem is that now my laptop (ASUS N55SF) beats my desktop, which kills me! I lost my OC settings a while ago, and I'd like to go again and am ready to OC this setup: EVGA X58 3SLI MOBO 312 Intel I7 2.66 GHZ (was OC once upon a time @ 4GHz, lost the settings..) Cooled by Cooler Master V8 EVGA Gtx 570 GSkills Sniper DDR3 Triple Channel RAM 12 GB (3x4GB) Crucial 256GB SSD (Going to upgrade later my MOBO to have all the SATA3 power) Win8 x64 *If I forgot anything, let me know. Of course, I found what I followed in the past this post http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=20028&mpage=1#20028 along with linuxrouter in order to have a 4.0 GHz on air that was 100% stable over 24h of Prime95, under 80 Now that I lost it all, I now have Windows 8, and it throws a clock_watchdog_timeout, which seems that the CPU is having trouble in coordination (http://www.reviversoft.com/blog/2013/01/clock-watchdog-timeout/) something like that. So if anyone could help out, best regards! XboxNissan

Do not follow that guide if you have a D0 stepping cpu. The older C0 steppings required more voltage. If you use those voltages it could fry your chip.

Try to find a overclock guide that uses a D0 stepping cpu. Also these are only GUIDES. They do not work across all CPUs. Due to differences in CPUs you could get a 4.5Ghz overclock on a 920 while on another 920 you can only get up to a 4.1.

If you're using VT then ok. I thought you may have had it enabled by mistake. I don't know what affect if any it would have on an OC. I would disable it while your working to find your stable OC then re-enable it later. Best way to OC is by going up in increments and testing in between. Start fairly easy. Set your bclk to 181 with a multi of 20 for a 3.6ghz OC. If you're not using vdroop, set vcore to 1.30 and VTT to +100mv and dim voltage to mfg'r spec. All other on auto. Your pic shows ram specs set? If that's the case, leave as is. Don't worry about your ram clock speed yet. Now while monitoring CPU temps with Real temp, run a stress test for 10 min or so. Let's see how that goes. If all is good, up your bclk by 5 & test again. Once you bsod, note the code so we get an idea of what voltage to tweak. We'll start with this until we get stable at a 201 bclk. Just watch your CPU temps.

Yeah, that's looks like what I would expect to see for those settings. Now leave everything as is, but up the blck by 5. (186) and test again. EDIT: Just to clarify...You did set your DIMM voltage to mfg'r spec and all other voltages to AUTO except for vcore & vtt, correct??

DIMM voltage to mfg'r spec, you mean auto? All other voltages to AUTO except for vcore & vtt: this is the test settings I took for Prime95: https://www.dropbox.com/s...3-05-28%2011.07.06.jpg
So should I test again with only CPU VCore to v1.3 and CPU VTT Voltage to +100mV, the rest being auto?
My memory: http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=393
Thanks so far!
No, for DIMM (ram) voltage, it would be something like 1.65v or maybe 1.50v. And yes, don't change vcore or vtt until you get a bsod or crash. That's when we adjust voltage again. Just up the blck at this time to 186 & test again for 10 - 12 min.

Ok, looking at your ram specs. The voltage is 1.5v and the latency specs are 9,9,9,24. Make sure to set them in the bios accordingly. Also, set your QPI/PLL voltage back to auto.

Okay, so I changed only the DIM to 1.65 (see previous picture for the other voltages that I haven't changed). I just want to be 100% sure, I change nothing else there or I put auto for QPI PLL VCore/other?

Ok, great... Now, the only change to make is upping your blck another 5 to 191. That'll give you a 3.8ghz OC. Test again for 10 - 12 min. Don't make any other changes. If you bsod, make note of the code so we have an idea what voltage(s) we need to tweak. Ahhh. Sorry, I missed your last statement about the bsod...hmmm let me think.

Ok, try this. Set bclk at 186 where you 1st got the error. Then set vcore to 1.325v and QPI/PLL vcore to 1.2v and re-run the 10 - 12 min test.

Hey bud, I have to step out awhile. I'm not leaving you hanging. I will be back in about 4 - 5 hrs. If you want, you can keep upping the blck by 5 using the last settings I gave you in post #21 until you get the next error or until you reach a 201 bclk whichever comes 1st. Then when I get back you can tell me where you left off & we can pick it back up from there. How's that sound??

Seems to work for now!
Great...is that with the settings I suggested in my post #21? If so, up the bclk another 5 and test again. But I really must take off now. Did you read my post #22 ?? See you later on.

No problem, we have our lifes ! Yes it is with the Post#21 Thanks a lot so far!! Just an update, so that we are on the same page. I'm including the 201 and will test it right away on the next post, this is just to give you a complete update. Else I'll put the stress test until you come back. Update : I tried 196, it just gets too hot. 13h29 (Before Prime95) : 48-53 41-42 45-46 41-42 13h30 : 83-88 79-86 85-87 81-84. Ok bud. Looking good so far. A couple items you can change: "Maximum Payload Size" - 4096 and "HPET Mode" - 64 bit. Ok, 186 was good with temps and a 10 - 12 min test, right? Have you tried 191 bclk yet with the current settings? That would net you a 3.8ghz clock speed. As I mentioned earlier in your thread here, the Coolermaster V8 is pretty cool looking, but not one of the better CPU coolers out there I'm afraid. Try the 191 blck. See if it will pass a 10 - 12 min test and see what the temps are & go from there.

''the Coolermaster V8 is pretty cool looking, but not one of the better CPU coolers out there I'm afraid.'' I should have known better... :/ I'll try the 191, I just installed a M4 256GB SSD to kick this old beast even more :)

Just keep an eye on those temps. Don't want to toast your chip :)

Sorry about the waiting, I'm still updating Windows 8 (like it was before). FYI: I bought an M4 Crucial SSD and I had to switch to RAID Mode to boot, else it would fail to boot up. So I'm currently updating windows and I shall post the results shorty, sorry again for the delay! I'm curious: For the same price (at the time i7 was the newest fastest CPU!) as the V8, what could have I bought to have a better cooling solution? Thanks!

Update: It lasted 1 minute, same BSOD as before (WHEA_UNCOLLECTABLE_ERROR) Any ideas?
