Many thanks Zophar :) Well I really love Retro hardware, the quality of the hardware is also lots and lots better than today's hardware, the mainboard is made in Taiwan under Supermicro's strict regulations and quality checks. Just due to the Made in China stuff we get these days, the parts might be of high grade, but the labor used on these parts is just terrible, mainly the quality of the solder used, is of very awful quality, all them GeForce cards that land in the ovens for example, I never had this with any of my 3dfx cards,as they were all made in Mexico or USA. Due to such things and the interests that lay around them, I always tend to lean forward to these oldies as they always have proved me of a very reliable and fun experiences. This system will be mainly used for my Descent 3 Scored games which I fly for Gold Phoenix Guard, my squad at Descent Rangers which you can see here: http://descentrangers.com...48f6-a7b5-a16800ce4ff6 Since the Voodoo5 5500 is made to render D3 in Glide 3.54b the extra VRAM Mod on the V5 will allow me to run the game without issues @ 1600 x 1200 even with FSAA x2 enabled. But yaps sorry for all the pro retro hardware there I am after all a Retro gamer, this system will be very well suited for any Descent type game , that's for sure I will make a video of the system once build, the Compaw S710 17" CRT arrived today haah always a pride to receive sucha nice piece of retroness! 1024 x 768 x32 @ 85 Herz, just lovely. It's a temporal solution for now, until I get my hands on a 22" EIZO or Sony Flatron CRT, that is where the real fun shall begin These babies do 2048 x 1536 x32 @ 87 to 107 herz hehe and have similar image quality to a high quality S-PVA panel, major advantage is that a CRT has a limitless view angle, I still find that CRT's have better image quality that TFT's heh.

No build from this era of computing could be complete without a U.S. Robotics 56K PCI Modem. Those things gave me low 100ish ping in the original Counterstrike and Diablo 1/2. 56K Modem sound for those that were not fortunate enough to experience it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gsNaR6FRuO0

Many thanks for the replies guys Well back then I had the Dual ISDN PCI from Fritz! Card, I skipped the 56K6, went from a 33K6 from Fritz! Card to Dual ISDN 16KB per sec up/down, and this was blazing!

Makes me think back to when I had 2x Voodoo2's (8mb cards) joined together for a powerful 16mb of video ram - least I think it was the voodoo 2, its been so long lol. Also had a Pentium 2 300mhz, that had a jumper on the mobo that let you OC it 450mhz.. the good old days lol. Looks fun, Good luck Gold Leader.

Made me laugh a bit when I saw that old 16 bit PCI slot on the end of the motherboard.

That is no PCI slot that is a 16 Bit ISA Slot ;) PCI are always the white ones, the short ones are PCI 2.1 32bit 33Mhz, the two long ones are PCI_X 64Bit 66Mhz/33Mhz they are also backward compliant with PCI 32Bit 66Mhz & 33Mhz The AWE64 Gold has the 16 Bit ISA connection for that Black Slot: The PC Flashed Voodoo5 5500 PCI Macintosh has the PCI 2.1 32Bit 66Mhz/33Mhz connection for them PCI-X 64Bit/32Bit Slots & Regular PCI 2.1 32Bit 33Mhz Slots: As you can see the connectors are totally different Te PCI-X 64Bit slots can be used for a wide rane of things VGA cards3dfx & Matrox support the 66Mhz Bus, Matroxx also makes PCI-X 64Bit VGA cards like their Parhelia PCI 256MB for example. 3dfx's Voodoo5 5500 PCI & PCI Macintosh cards support 33Mhz & 66Mhz Bus speeds for 32Bit PCI. PCI 32Bit 66Mhz is equivalent to AGP x1 as where PCI-X 64Bit 66Mhz Mhz is equivalent to AGP x2. So it's really not that bad actually, PCI-X 64Bit 133Mhz is equivalent to AGP x4. That 16 Bit ISA Slot is a vital need for this project, it's needed to fit the ebst sound card for Midi Sound FX & music. This card is named as the Creative labs AWE64 Gold. there are two models the CT 4390 and CT 4540, I have both, the CT 4540 is the refresh of the CT 4390, here a picture of both, the CT 4390 is the top larger card. Top: Rear: Headshot: Here a video of my CT4390 in Avenger M99 which lets you hear the sound quality of the AWE64 Gold with Midi music: This system will use the CT4540, since the CT 4390 is used in Avenger M99.

I am putting this in a case I paint modded in 1996 & 1999 the Addtronics 6896A Entry Level Server Tower, it's something personal to me too that I amusing this hand made steel case. This is the case it will go in to: Here some other old pics of it with my Compaq S710 17" CRT: The parts in this case will be removed, then I will clean the case from inside out and all it's needed parts, and then I will neatly build in the Dual P3/S 1400 gear. This system is dedicated to Descent3 and Freespace2, so this case has the perfect purpose. This case used to be Beige, but I always didn't like the boring look of them cased, thus I always painted mine
