I was looking at some lower priced ones around $250. Wish I had a bigger budget for the nicer 8ch dvr's.

This was my new pick since its weatherproof, hope ice doesn't affect it xP mic on this is a nice plus

Old pick was from Lorex till I saw it wasn't waterproof. Two way talk was cool for the front door.

Now, for those that have em, question, how do you go about powering these suckers up with their short power cord? Lorex I seen someone post up it was 4ft cord. Do you hire like a certified electrician to install dedicated power sources nearby the cameras? Anywho, thoughts? Other products? Experience from using them. Its mostly for the front door and driveway for the cars, thinking of adding 2 more to these 4ch devices eventually. Theres been many burglaries in the area lately, so far I think all the houses that did get broken into all didn't have house alarms, ours does thankfully and no trouble so far. Its just scary, cause both our neighbors on the left and right side of us were broken into. Maybe that alarm sign out front in the yard does justice xD

I wouldn't spend the money on a surveillance system unless you get a reduced insurance premium out of it. The only possible way it could help would be to catch the person(s) if they break into your house, but that's highly unlikely. Your situation already demonstrates the fact that you don't have to have the most secure house in the world, you just need to have the most secure house on the block. I'd just let your alarm and insurance serve their purposes and not worry. In general you shouldn't worry about thing that aren't in your control.

None are really wireless. I would suggest getting poe cameras and just streaming the feeds to your laptop or whatever.

One of my buddies from work has a bunch of Raspberry Pis with webcams around his house that he rigged as security cameras.

    Smart idea LOL

Tried wireless cams and too much noise(cell traffic etc) to get quality picture. Those Uniden cams use 5vdc and you can use a recharagable battery to power them. Rather than change batteries I would use a solar charger to recharge them. That really is sun dependent so not doable in a cloudy climate or too far north. Swain is what I had until I went with Q-See for mobil app so I can monitor anywhere. Highly recommend wired and look on e-bay there are some 4cams with dvr under $200 you provide hd for dvr. Since most cams run on 12vdc it is a safe do it yourself install.

I've got the Logitech alert covering the front and back doors, shop and also the living room it's not wireless but all you do is plug it into any outlet and the signal travels through the electrical lines through out your house, so no need to run wires to each camera. I always have it running when I'm on the PC also I can see it from any tv screen in the house has sound to which is nice, I can hear people talking a 1/2 a block away if I turn it up. supports up to 6 cameras, I only use four, video is download on to a 1tb hardrive.

Almost forgot another nice thing is you can watch it from your smart phone live, I have is set so if there is movement for more than 10sec it sends me a message.
Price isn't that bad I have around $1000 into it with 4 cameras, system I was looking at one camera was $1300 but the video was a little better too. Base system with one camera is $350 then each add on camera is $280-$230 with discounts.
