I seem to be getting Wininit Warning messages on my system in the Event Viewer.  The error references a .dll which I do not show on my system and seems to be related to starting up unsecured .dlls.  This is Windows 8, but if you have it in Windows 7, please advise.

The reference shows:
C:\PROGRA~2\NVIDIA~1\3DVISI~1\NVSTIN~1.DLL

Custom dynamic link libraries are being loaded for every application. The system administrator should review the list of libraries to ensure they are related to trusted applications. Please visit http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197571 for more information.
This may also be related to error messages concerning the Windows 8 Fast Start or Hybrid Start, which is where a hibernation file is written at shutdown and the system uses it to resume.

Thanks

This website explains where this is:

http://www.freefixer.com/library/file/84823/

It's an NVIDIA file so the best solution is an uninstall and reinstall of the NVIDIA drivers. However, after the uninstall check the folder where this file is referenced (it might be a hidden file) in the folder (in the link I provided). If after an uninstall the folder is still there delete the folder, then reinstall.

As you suggest, uninstalling the driver in Device Manager and checking the Uninstall all versions box, removed the driver and when Windows put it back the .dll file was there.  But the Wininit error continues to occur.

I think I have found a way around it.  Since I don't use 3D, I don't normally allow the 3D drivers to be loaded.  But Windows 8 does that by itself so I am trying to uninstall just them from the Programs panel to see if it helps.  I will also uninstall the Updatus driver since I am seeing errors for it also.

I will post back if the uninstalls helped.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply.  I had seen a site earlier that had directed me to the registry key mentioned in your post

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/197571

This is where I picked up the location of the errant DLL along with the Wininit error message.  Not sure if it is relevant, but the Microsoft Net Meeting server (mnmsrvc) was mentioned in that same location in the "Default" key.

Turning off the loading is probably an option, but it would be nice to find out what was causing the problem in the first place.

The uninstall I performed seems to have two benefits.  I did not get a Wininit error on my last boot, and the Windows 8 hybrid boot did not give me a Kernel-Boot error (29) with a 0xC00000D4 error code.

I will keep watching it to see if anything changes back, and after a while I might try reinstalling the 3D drivers to see if the problem returns.

Thanks.

I didn't find that file in my system but I've never installed the 3D drivers. One of the AV program trial versions that I had tried changed that Registry key and I started getting errors again until I changed it back.

Re:Anyone show this file on their system? 2012/12/29 12:49:58 (permalink)
It looks like the simple answer to my question is if you have install the 310.70 update, you will not have the file.

Windows 8 will install the 306.97 update which includes the .dll and modifies the registry.  The 310 update removes the .dll but does not remove the registry entries, which create the Wininit warning messages.

So, as Zuhl3156 was showing in that post, I went into the registry and removed the offending entries, which for me were to set LoadAppInit_DLLs to 0 and remove the reference to the .dll in AppInit_DLLs  in the following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows

I was hoping this situation was related to the Kernel_Boot error messages, but it went away and has not come back, so I cannot verify that the problems are related.

Thanks for the help, I think the situation is solved ...

I have been doing some more research and the only way I can stop the Kernel-Boot errors in the Event Viewer, when booting after a system shutdown, is to uninstall the 3D components of the Nvidia drivers in the Programs and Features dialog.

Wondows 8 Fast (Hybrid) boot will then return to a normal operation.

I've always had this issue, using nvidia (geforceGT540) with intel HD3000...
I've manually installed Nvidia (via devgmt.msc >> Browse for .inf), as with all other devices (quite a chore - to get opencl you need to run OCLSetup.exe)

I've fixed lots of issues with a reinstall (currently no software, but no errors, only warnings)

about to try , but pretty sure it'll kill optimus

drivers (Dell XPS l502x, win7 Ultimate x64)
