Here is where I am. I'm wanting to setup folding on a SR2 with CPU's E5645 & E5620 20 cores.
What would be best to use for this in the OS of Windows 7 64bit, Virtual box or
something else & what image should I use?
Some of the links in linuxrouter's thread don't seem to work for me at this time.
Is there some new help on this somewhere I'm missing? Links would be a great help.
Been a while since I've done a VM so I may need some help a long the way.
Thanks

Best is Linux. Use the setup guide for Ubuntu from the [H] forum. Here's the link.

I got vbox working. Picked up a 8101 right off. Is that a bigadv WU?
Working only 18 cores to start with.

Excellent to hear Wolf.    The SR-2 in my mind is the sweetest Xeon mobo ever built and still a viable contender for many uses today.  The 5620 overclocks well considering it is coming from 2.4GHz to start.  Mine were most stable at 3.8GHz for Folding and I expect the 5645 may go a notch or so further.

Musky's guide for Ubuntu 10.10 installation is very thorough.  Just open that Guide in your browser (while in Ubuntu) and you can copy/paste the command strings (line by line) right into your Terminal window (saves a bunch of typing).  One part of the Guide that I found did not function was the part that instructs you how to pull the FAH software over from Stanford (Step 8 in the "Basic Install" section).  I think Stanford changed something with the links after V7 became the norm for them.  So via my browser, I pulled a copy of the 6.34 Client direct from Stanford and extracted it into my FAH Folder in Ubuntu.  Here's the link and under the "Other Available Clients" section, you want the 6.34 client for Linux 64bit download.
    http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download2011

Follow Musky's Guide step by step and it will get you there.  Linux is the only way to go because I don't think any of the Bigadvs can be obtained via Windows anymore.  Beyond that, Linux is just way more efficient for Folding and yields the best performance anyway.

At this time I do not want to go full native Linux as I still have some use for W7.
Plus I kind of want to see just how much PPD I could get by running a video card farm on this board.
18 cores for bigadv & 2 cores for video & other things I'll be doing.

Here is a SS of how its doing at 3.8Ghz. I did have to up my vcore a little as I got a BSOD with the Vbox
folding as where at 1.23v it folded 20 cores in W7 stable. How do these times/credit & PPD look at this speed?

Edit: I wanted to stop & go to full 20 cores, but if I remember correct a change in cores will cause the loss of a WU when folding in Linux?

Looks like you are running a TPF of ~30mins on that 8101.  I have not run an 8101 on my SR-2 yet, so I can't comment on the performance.  If it was standard SMPs or even some of the previous Bigadvs (6903,6904) I could offer some comment.  How do you feel about Vbox from a multiple OS perspective and switching between Win7 and Linux (user feel)?

Yes, I would not make a change to cores in the middle of a WU.  I'd make sure the Folding session had the -oneunit argument set and complete the WU before making a change to hardware settings.

I left a post in the other thread to help you with getting a vbox setup going.

I like it a lot, its like running any other application or regular folding to me in a way.
It makes things so simple, a big thanks goes out to linuxrouter & others for there time and effort put in this guide.
I've used it in the past and its still one of the best out here in my opinion.

Trying to wrap my head around what is required to install Vbox too.  Does it require that you have a separate HDD to install the Vbox Folding image onto?

One thing I'll say for my brief venture into trying out VMware Player is that is was very easy to install and use.  They got that part down to a finely tuned, easy experience IMO.  It's just too bad that it isn't a good choice for Folding if you have greater than 4 Cores.

Vbox sets up just like vmware to me, a few difference steps, but nothing the guide will not walk you threw.
I went by the pictures posted & there settings. Worked great. No a extra HDD is not needed.

I may be a little dense today, but I'm not exactly following the installation process on Linurouter's web page for installing a "Virtual Box Configuration".  He says "Install Virtualbox with default options".  Does that mean I need to locate the base Virtual Box program somewhere on the net, install that and then return to his installation process?

The link for VirtualBox 4.1.8 Installer is down in the lower half of his Edit: image page.
On the pictured guide page you will want to skip to: Virtualbox Configuration
    Install Virtualbox with default options.

on that page & began there.

See edits above for a little clearer "I Hope" post.

Edit: don't forget to download one of the images on this page.
I'm using 1.4.1.7 at the moment because 1.5.0 was dowloading so slow last night.
I already have a vb setup for 1.5.0 and will start it once this WU has finished.

Wait 1.4.1.7 maybe be the best for I7, I noticed some changes to the cpu's used in 1.5.0.1

Sorry for double post. Maybe someone else can confirm 1.5.0.1 is ok to use for i7 cpu's?

Reading his "change-log" it appears that he simply updated the image to include some additional processor families.  I saw that the latest image (1.5.0) does include Tear's latest version of "the Kraken", so that would be a good thing to have IMO.  I'm gonna try-out the 1.5.0 image.

Ok I just noticed when starting 1.5 there wasn't a option to pick a i7 cpu in the list.
But it may have been there since I didn't explore it very much.
Just trying to get/give info and not miss lead anyone.

I'm still waiting on the download of 1.5 (your right it's taking quite awhile, but I'm about 50% home).  I'll report back if there is any problem using 1.5 with an i7.

Yea it was real slow compared to 1.4 DL speed. I was tiered and wanted to get to bed.
Yes please do post your findings. Will be helpful once I finish this WU.

OK, got ver 1.5 installed OK along with VirtualBox.  First thing I realized was...ack, no GUI for me!    I'm used to running Ubuntu Desktop where I have that squishy warm feeling of the GUI.  Then I thought about it for a moment and realized, OK this is just a big Terminal window in Linux.  Probably a good thing since it will use the least resources in this Virtual Machine environment.

Since I'm no Linux command expert, but do know the basic Terminal commands for Folding, I decided to fire up a standard SMP on my SR-2 to see how it compares to a non-VM environment.  So far TPF is very similar to what I was seeing if I ran an SMP in a non-virtualized Win7 environment (~10 seconds slower using VirtualBox).  But, so far so good and I'm now using all my cores as well.  I don't think the Kraken would have been able to wrap onto my A3 core since that has to be done after you download the initial core by requesting that first WU.  At least that's the way it works if I'm installing from a new Ubuntu setup.  I really don't know what all is going on in the background with Linuxrouter's setup, so I'm a bit shaky in my understanding at this point.

Once it settles in those time may get lower.
I noticed my times went up a little in vb while I done web base things and using paint for pictures & other stuff in W7.

Just checked the running processes using the "top" command and the kraken is not yet wrapped onto my FAH A3 core.  I could also see the effect of it not running by looking at the Performance window in the Win7 Task Manager.  Though all the CPUs are being heavily used, they are not maxed out at the top of the usage bars (looks like ripple up there).  So, I guess that I need to stop the WU and then see if I can manually fire-up the Kraken.

Just to chime in on the PPD of you 8101, what your getting seems right. I was doing those with a pair of 5620's at the same speed for around 101k ppd running native linux. And also leaving the machine alone except to check progress once or twice a day.

What cpu did you pick from the list in 1.5.0? The list is much different in the 1.4.1 version.

That Processor type selection list was a strange area with only two selections as I recall.  I went with what it defaulted to, but can't recall the acronym that was in the list.

As to the Kraken, stop your WU with Cntl C to get back to a prompt.
    Then type this command:
    ./thekraken -i

It will display some data and ask if you want to continue through sub directories and I selected "yes".  Then it said that it had successfully wrapped 1 item (which for me was the A3 core since I'm running a standard SMP). TheKraken has to be run (only once) with that -i command for every FAH core that is downloaded.  For example, If I start up a Bigadv next which uses the A5 core, I will need to again run that Kraken wrapper command so that from then on the Kraken is attached to that Fah Core.

Then restart your WU and you will see some stuff about theKraken float by as the WU starts up.

Just thought I'd mention that the good news is...I think this VirtualBox software is working pretty well.  This could be what I've been wanting for some time to allow me to still have Windows running while Folding in Linux.  So far so good even if I do yield a few seconds to the TPF Gods for having a Virtual environment.

Edit:  Onward to Bigadv if I can pull off an 8101 on my SR-2 5620s @3.8GHz.  If not then there probably is no need for VirtualBox on this Rig and I'd have to revert to standard SMP using Win7.

When starting the vb at 1st boot kind of like a motherboard bios you will see
a red box, you then hit one of the up or down arrow keys it will pause there &
you can pick from a list of other CPU's in the list by using the arrow keys.

    Thanks for posting zophar.

I stopped fah & the vb and changed the amount of cores to 20 in vb restarted now the FAH has all 20 cores loaded 100%.

./thekraken -i doesn't do anything in 1.4.1v, says file not found.
I'll be sure to do that tho once I swap over to 1.5v, thanks for the tip.

I was up in the top root directory when I typed that kraken command.

    Typed:
    cd ~
    ./thekraken -i

Maybe you were in another directory?

I've seen that CPU splash screen you mentioned when first starting up VirtualBox, but before I can even read all the choices it scrolls off and goes onto other things.  Are you doing something to make it hold while you check those selections?

Just to chime in on the PPD of you 8101, what your getting seems right. I was doing those with a pair of 5620's at the same speed for around 101k ppd running native linux. And also leaving the machine alone except to check progress once or twice a day.

Thanks for posting this info is useful. Its showing around 103K PPD with 18 cores or 218K credit for the WU.
I'll have to let it settle back in with the 20 cores & I'll re-post what it looks like then.

The SR2 is working great I got from you, Thanks for such a great deal.

Edit: yes just hit one of the arrow keys, up or down on your keyboard.
make sure your locked in to the VB & not on w7 desktop tho by clicking the VB with mouse.
