This thread is being started for any of us that would like to openly discuss the 2013 Chimp Challenge. We want to improve on the mistake we made, and leverage the strengths we have. The efforts had been tremendous, however we as a team may have expected more to happen on it's own than what actually happened. This thread is an attempt to improve our internal communication and find ways to create a foundation that is impervious to the outside elements that are out of our control.

The idea is simple... We all should have a "Safe" place to openly discuss the next CC. This can include...
  • What rules should we propose
  • Captain's
  • Should we participate
  • Time of year
  • Test ideas for formulas
  • ETC
The rules...
  • Always keep in mind the idea of the CC is to grow our team and other teams as we raise awareness to what Folding is. It is not about winning! However that can be "Part" of why we do it, it is not the only "Reason" to do it.
  • Post ONLY if you can start and follow through with an "Agree to Disagree" / "Constructive" comment, topic, discussion or response.
  • Any bickering or bantering, or even deliberate acts of pushing the "Spirit" of these rules will result in those posts being deleted.
  • We are looking for all to feel safe and free to offer their own thoughts/feelings on this topic.
  • If you have a complaint/or have an issue with a part of the contest, great! We ask that you at least offer a solution to your complaint/issue in the same post you make to offer the complaint. Or two!
  • Any EVGA member is welcomed to comment, regardless of their level of production, new, old, past, never have folded. It simply does not matter. Some of the best conversations, ideas come from those that once folded or never have.
  • All rules are subject to change as time allows, because Stone Cold Said So...

Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 17:40:06 (permalink)
I will start...

I am done with other teams telling us what to do and why the rules have to be handicapped to their own advantage, to yet sit back and watch them abuse those very rules to their advantage. The focus of CC (IMHO) has been dumbed down or diluted to "Winning" a web link to a photo. That does not extend, improve or save lives. FOLDING does...

My proposal...

We build/focus our team to do what CC is meant to do for all teams. GROW/Create awareness! If we happen to win the contest along the way, cool. This way our spirits/attitude/efforts are not rising or falling because of the outside influences.

Please do not confuse that with not participating or being a part of all the other teams. I mean in the spirit of our teams' focus, we need to take control and focus on what is important to our team "During" our participation.

Couple of ideas...
  • We set a goal to a set number of new folks to attract into folding. We actually did a pretty darn good job of this this year.
  • We focus on informing/educating those that do fold for us during the year on what CC is and how they can help.
  • And so on...

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 18:19:23 (permalink)
I have to agree that the CC has lost focus and what it has taken to win the last two years was the team that "borrowed" the most folders from other teams.  Thus, AB's idea to do our own tracking of new folders is an excellent way to get US back towards actually increasing folding participation, which is really the goal of CC.

If we do choose to participate next year (and that's a big IF) I have a few comments:
  • While I understand the reason for folding under chimp names, it also lets teams hide "borrowed" production anonymously.  If we use our own folding names, we can track new members AND it becomes a lot easier to spot "borrowed" team members.
  • PMs are an EXTREMELY slow means of communication.  My experience trying to get ahold of people that were ALREADY part of Folding M@dness and simply needed to make their picks shows that some folks only log in to the forum every 10 days or two weeks.  If we are going to use PMs, it should start at least a month ahead of CC.
  • We need AT LEAST a month between any other team challenges and the CC.  It's too hard to spin up interest again for nearly back-to-back challenges.
  • I'd still prefer the "10-90" or whatever we want to call the non-scaled scoring system, as it puts the top teams much closer together.  The scaled system creates huge gaps quickly and teams lose interest quickly.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 19:34:27 (permalink)
We need to work on recruiting, as well.  This year, we entrusted one entity to do their part and the ball got dropped, we went into the challenge with people not ready.

Time of year, as well, will play a key difference.  Do we schedule it to ease the summer slump, do we go and add another contest to the busy winter season?  I vote for a contest in the fall.  We've got so much on our plate that realistically, it's the only time we're not in a contest.

As for captains and scoring, I feel a team as large as EVGA needs at least 2 captains as it's got to be overwhelming.

Scoring, a direct system only.  No more of this "x amounts of real points is equal to y amount of this point, and x - y is equal to z which we divide by zero to get your true score" crap.  It's demoralizing to fall ever further behind because the score hinders us.

Also, the handicaps need to stop trying to cripple teams that can't pull every member and then some in on it.

As mentioned, ditch the team names.  Well, we use the 'team name' as the stats name, but add up all the team players to get the stats.  After all, that way conversion is who signed up, not who signed up, remembered the contest, got the name right, and pulled people from other teams cause EVGA can't be #1 at anything... (can you tell I'm upset and thinking today?)

Getting the word out needs to be done at least 3 months in advance, as well as more often in the challenge area.  Also, any team who wishes to be a part of the challenge should realize that they have to actually show up to meetings, instead of free-coasting things to pull a "veto by time delay."

Also, if push comes to shove and no one wishes to compromise, we can take our team and do something else at the same time.  I wouldn't be opposed to a round of EVGA vs Chimp Challenge if we sufficiently handicapped the 7 or 8 teams that go against us.  After all, if they don't play ball with compromise, we shouldn't bend over backwards and kiss our heels for them, playing a game we have no chance of winning.

After all, the contests we do are fun because all teams have an equal chance to win.  We don't handicap one team into oblivion.

How about having EVGA & EVGA only control the prizes for all the contests!

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 20:35:26 (permalink)
I have two questions for everyone to think about as well...

  1. Do we honestly believe that we should even participate, or that the other teams even want us to?
  2. Why was there a low conversion rate?

My thoughts...

If they wanted us to they would be trying to find a way for all teams to have a good time. Not the same predictable ones. Is that NOT why they forced the handi cap to begin with? Yet when they are in the winning position, all is well... No need for change...

My gut is telling me that a team of our size, and that 85% of those that are members may only glance at the forums once a week or in off and on spells, that to many folks think all 210,000+ members log in everyday. However they simply do not. A smaller team can reach their members far easier than we can...

Are this contributing factors? Yes...
  1. Lag time (Other teams dragging their feet till the last moment)
  2. Communication
  3. No chance to win, so why switch when I cannot help our team win?
  4. Part failures
  5. Time of the year
  6. Consistent feeling of not being welcome and is used as a door mat instead of leveraging each teams talent/abilities.
  7. Internal bantering
  8. Etc

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 21:12:01 (permalink)
As a new folder and first time CC participant, I really don’t have a frame of reference against which to compare this year’s event.  However, I do agree with several of the points already mentioned.

After reading through some of the forums archived from previous years, it does seem that the atmosphere of this year’s CC is considerably subdued.  Even though I had been crunching on WCG for years, it was the enthusiasm I saw displayed during last year’s CC that convinced me to add folding to my DC efforts.  I’m sure there will be some debate as to the cause(s), but here is my perspective as a “noob”.

It seems that the focus of the CC should be two-fold;  1) to attract new members to the folding family, and 2) to encourage existing folders to keep up or preferably increase their folding efforts.  While the CC and other competitions are great ways to gain the needed publicity and pique the interest of potential folders, I think they can also be daunting or even deterring to a lot of people, whether they are a novice folder or a veteran.

First, the easier we can make things for new folders, the better chance that they will remain in (and be productive members of) the folding family.  Spending large amounts of time and effort to recruit new members and then as soon as they get settled in and comfortable, we tell them they need to change their folding name, enter a new passkey, change their folding engine configuration, etc, etc, for “only 10 days”  and then change back.  If they had any amount of confusion or difficulty getting things set up the first time, and they get the impression that this is a frequent occurrence, we’ve probably done a good job of chasing them away.  For the veterans, especially those with multiple machines, it simply becomes an unnecessary hassle which they can easily avoid by simply not being a part of any competitive effort.

Second, a lesson that I learned after 22+ years in the military:  a little “smack talk” goes a long way.  In the end, we are all part of the same effort – to bring an end to diseases that have scourged humanity for centuries, and perhaps even prevent new ones from developing.  When we allow team affiliation, past history, differing personal goals or motivations , or anything else to become bases for hostility towards ANYONE else in the DC community, then we should not be surprised that we find it difficult to recruit and retain new members to our cause.  Please don’t misunderstand me, I’m not trying to squash any competitive spirit, but when friendly trash talk turns to something ugly, it’s time to suck it up and remember why we’re here in the first place.

Third, is the timing of the event.  I’m not trying to alienate any of our DC brethren in the southern hemisphere, but the fact is that the vast majority of team members are situated north of the equator.  This being the case, any event between late spring and early fall which involves producing more indoor heat, seems to be immediately at a disadvantage .  In our current economic state, it seems counterproductive to encourage increased folding efforts, when it will certainly result in large increases in electricity usage, both to power the production systems, and also to disperse the resulting heat.

To sum this all up, future CCs (and any other events) should be kept as simple as possible; no configuration changes, no difficult to understand point formulas, lest we discourage any from joining or staying with us.  Trash talk can be a great motivator, but only when kept in check.  Everyone has their own personal boundaries, and when it becomes apparent that they have been crossed, let the situation drop.  Lastly, consider moving the event to a winter setting to help offset the heat issues.  Perhaps January would be a good month.  Take advantage of the New Year (and all those potential resolutions) and use the publicity of the CC to promote the science of folding as a means of doing something rewarding and beneficial for the rest of humanity.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 21:23:01 (permalink)
This was my 4th CC. I started folding during the CC 4 years ago and always believed this was a great recruiting tool. I don't have the same feelings today. It seems to me that the CC is more about winning than trying to get more folders. We (all folding teams) have lost sight of our goal.
Now why did this happen?
[H] is a powerful team that hasen't participated in a few years because of in team arguing. I respect their decision no to enter to keep their team together. But to see them join other teams just so EVGA doesnt win is not part of the CC spirit.
Team EVGA is in a slump. I haven't seen this team so down since I joined. There are many reasons for this. Maybe it's because we are going to lose the 1st palce spot. Other teams are CPU based and have many more multi CPU systems. Or just some people are upset with how the PG group is running the point system.
Whatever the reasons...we need to get our heads out of our backsides and come together as a team.
I don't think we need to participate in nect years CC if there are not some major changes in the structure.
We do much better at in team contests than we did at this years CC. Look at the time zone challange.
I'm not giving up on this team no matter what place we are in the standings, so I'm going to leave my systems on [link=mailto:F@H]F@H[/link] instead of switching back to crunching for a while.
I think for our next contest instead of prizes we donate anyone who wants to, should throw in some money to paypal enough to build a multi socket rig. That would get a whole lot of people folding again.

^^ I am doing both now... Folding and Crunching... I let PG get to me and it took me a while to get over it... However my heart is with the team regardless of the projects we choose to support individually or as a team... In other words, you're not alone

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/23 22:01:14 (permalink)
2 observations:

1. other teams have a grudge against us because they feel we are 'paid' to play by our buck perks, and therefore feel superior to us because 'they are the true folders' (this may or may not be relevant to cc 2013, but it might be a cause for some of the issues.)

2. changing names is a major inconvenience for a lot of people. consider the non technical guy who set up a few console folders on linux to get max output then promptly forgets how he set it up and what the command lines are to change the name. (not sure how many of these guys we have on the team but, I almost fit in that category and I would be willing to bet the name change is a deal breaker for a lot of our team.

point 1 is hard to deal with. its just immaturity and human nature working against us here. reaching out to make friends of them is the only way i can think of to overcome this. no one likes to feel that they are in a contest against a bunch of paid monkeys (no pun intended)

point 2 is for you guys with contest organization skills to figure out. but use KISS (Keep it simple, stupid) and make it real easy to join the contest and things will be better for all teams especially if the goal is additional awareness and new folders.

oh and one last thing. the 1st contest i participated in for this team was march madness. a big problem there was that there were prizes but not enough transparency in the rules at the start. people started to feel like they were being cheated. arguing ensued and a lot of people lost motovation. the answer to this is make the rules. expose the resons for the rules very clearly, thenm stick to them no mater what. prizes can be used as a motivator, but remember a lot of people will compete just for the prize without caring at all about the cause. we need to figure out how to balance that out so we arnt just paying people to boost the contest but actually are getting new forlders for the cause.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 02:24:35 (permalink)
Well,... I spend time doing other things to day and to my surprise when I checked in we have a new cc2013 discussion thread

Good idea AB

im going to cover this in sections

this years contest

1. there was nothing wrong with the formula. if we had met last years conversion we could be in 1st(16-18)M or close to it
if we had met last year's ppd(12M PPD) we be in 3rd (we doing 9M this year).

the problem was lack of conversion - getting members to switch to the apes
furthermore production was down - had we met march folding madness numbers we be slugging it out
28M(top team PPD) x 60%(last year conversion)   =17M(ape PPD)...and OCN was doing 16M...be a tight race

we even could have won..if we had lower Team output and we could get the team switched over with higher conversion

2. FORMULAS

for people who couldn't understand the categories it's simple

conversion is ape output/team output  this gives a %...it's then normalized (from 10-110) lowest get 10pts... highest team get 110pts

growth is based off last years numbers this year
(output - last years/ last years)  this gives a +- % growth then it normalized the same way from (10-110)

and PPD category is just normalized against the other teams (you don't need to divide PPD by 1m to get points then normalize..it just shifts decimal places)

the formula was more than fair - we did after all bring in members from other teams (I do thank the crunchers that came from other teams on a trek with us as well as members from other teams that popped in...we might have had a few - there people I knew that would)

my only issue was that I would have like to weight the three categories
(ie like 40% PPD, 50 % growth, 10% conversion...- this is an example the weighting can be tweaked - worked on)

why? conversion directly affects growth and PPD if you get new members or conversion you get growth and increased PPD
and large team joinups can't affect it greatly by large amounts if you do that

and growth directly affects PPD - ie 10% growth in production should be a 10% increase in PPD
so we are counting the numbers twice???
and if you add conversion 10% more people switched should relate to 10% growth and 10% PPD increase...so 3 times???

to me this was an improvement over the exponential formula zodac had

so for me it's...  what we should consider to be more important PPD or growth...(Id say growth)?

anyways this would all change if we get rid of the CC names

3. lack of lead time - yes this was an issue
there is no way for one or two people to PM that many people...it take 10 of us about 3 days each working on a section to get a message out, and then you wouldn't get everyone. blocked pm, full inbox, away, left team, machine down - no email, folding name not matching evga name - so no sendout

if this is to be done it has to be coordinated by either
A) a team, with multiple waves(3 sendouts - in case they miss or forget about it)
B)EVGA - mass email blast - they have the member list - they can bypass pm - and directly email home email address
c) EVGA forum banner
d) all above

4. timing of event - yes this had an afffect - it was late - near june - heat would be an issue for some
it was later than the previous CC which put members out of sorts...and at one time we all thought we wouldn't even have one

5. Team Spirit? -to early to know for sure how this played in
it could be we might be back to our old selfs and and happy ...just the other factors  did us in
but it could be we are still a little sore from March folding and Some with PG..

if we aren't ourselves we need to find something to rally around and get our mojo back
ie recruitment treks and  hoodie contest ...we need something to get energized again

6, EVGA's commitment to the DC group
they dropped the ball a bit - they promised the PM/email last...we got the banner - and it was late

given they had short lead time  - I can understand as well
next year provide we had good lead time - we can have the banner and maybe a mass email/market blast by EVGA
if we can convince them to add a little more support as well like small prizes like hoodies (ie FOLDing hoodies, crunching, DC hoodies- that have both ), lanyards, coffee mugs??

seems OCN can manage to get hoodies out this year - yet EVGA can't???

Im buying 2-3 new EVGA gpu's soon and then a MB and CPU for a new build
be nice to know that EVGA backs up the team seeing the $$$ and time we put in to it and people we bring in

we aren't asking for Hardware (although the last years signed fermi was nice during the anniversary)

next years discussions

1, I already had proposed to continue discussions after the CC for next chimp to avoid the same issues...that met with silence

2. proposed month was april - unless it was changed since (others were against fall) - reason - cooler
doesn't matter what season you pick some team will oppose

3 CC names - drop them or keep them will be the fight
seeing how OCN did so well they shouldn't complain next year about the switch

4. general prize pool? every team donates into 1 big pool
this would be beneficial to smaller teams that has a harder time with donations

5. Folding in honors page... we set up a yearly page were we add fallen members too

6 we have to have an official site - OCN and my page are not up to a official site that has been well planned and laid out
with a chat page, inter-team prizes, folding in memory of (fallen soldier)page, good graphs and stats page, and a new team invite/sign-up page (for those teams that are watching or wish to join for next years chimp)

team preparedness

1 we have to get our mojo back... we have to quit bickering and convince past folders to ignore PG and fold for the team - because it's a good cause...just like I do crunching - do both because you can

don't quit or complain because PG  changed things or you got the brush off at foldingforums.
it not much different with crunching projects - bugs and fixes and forum help is not very good - and lost work you don't get credit for
at least PG will try to recoup lost points (can't say the same for DC projects - which vary on quality)

we gave them a good snub...that's enough
Id suggest we try letting it go a and work to get the team bigger and more powerful like [H]

if it means we go on treks to other folding teams (sub teams) and make new friends - and get them interested in EVGA and what they offer..it's a good idea

2. coordination with EVGA on contest has to be worked out (for all of them)... it be nice if EVGA would at least work out contest banners ,stickies and email blasts to members for important contests.

that might mean a mod or two that works with them  to do this

3. A team effort to keep informed - check emails and pms every couple of days and read the folding/crunching threads for news

4. go back to folding heads up(member to member) - to energize and gear up our members to be ready anytime / anyplace to duke it out

5. encourage people at every opportunity in your community to look into folding for EVGA - talk about it, how it makes you feel

contest rules

1. as was noted contest rules should be spelled out early...and no changes after the rules are in place
that was the fiasco in march

2. members must be courteous - I don't want members to insult, malign or threaten any other member in any way
we have members that have left because of that - lets try to get them back

3. when you enter a contest it becomes your responsibility to read the rules and the prize distribution thread and keep informed
if you miss out on a prize because you we're not present - sleepin on not on it's your own fault for not keeping up
(we'll be a day or two for you to check in and  respond to to distro method we use - currently punchy has a good system)

maybe this will wake some members up that logging in and checking in every once and awhile is a good thing

just like it's the responsibility to keep to the original rules from the onset for the contest volunteers (switchin midstream the rules that change team positions or team outcomes is not good)

4. we can't bar teams from recruiting other teams or people
how could we know(we we only know from the few that do tell)?? - they can just switch - they can even create new names to fold under

we do the same - we got some this year

in fact if you go out and recruit and make friends we might actually get some to switch here ..ie  steal a few from [H] or elsewhere
permanently

For me, bottom line... the scoring system is a joke. I fired up and came back to folding for the CC (missed you guys and I will keep folding). Last year was my first and I had a blast. This one frankly (and bluntness is my strong point/curse) sucks. I will reiterate what many have already pointed out (hi Tank), the scoring system should go back to the way it was or something along those lines. The CC should be about nothing else but recruiting new folders and motivating current folders to find a way to fold more (I also have military background AF). We as a team should not be knuckling under to other teams that are only trying to manipulate us as a team (and we are the greatest team) and the system to handicap us to the point we have no way of winning. OK, I'm done (for now). EVGA Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1. i say go back to the original point system.it was good before evga won.
2. have the contest  in cooler months, burning up parts to try and win a contest add,s more problems for members.
3.see if a C.C. thread can be set to show up in the top spot in the forums when anyone clicks the, posts since last visit, in the forum menu tab.
4.tell people that live around us about folding contests with prizes and evga. we may be able to get new people to try folding if they have a chance to win a nice prize. and there will be a few that get the folding bug.
5.no more posts about any evga team folder that is not shed in a good light.if you have to complain about something a member may have did that you did not like,pm him or her. this bickering between team members does not help recruitment.

well i am not the sharpest tool in the box,but this is just my idea of the way i would like to see it. i used to fold almost 24/7 and after a few things popped up with pg i did not like.i just quit folding.the only time i fold now is in contests to support my team.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 05:44:40 (permalink)
Well, hard to add much that hasn't already been said and bravo to those thoughts!  A few things came to me as I was reading all of the above, so I share those here.

  1. Should we participate in CC2013?  At this point, I'd have to say that I'm not convinced we should, unless it can be fun to do.  I'm not feeling it anymore, but do want to...
  2. Our team is basically in an exhaustion mode compared to where we have been.  CC2012 came too close to March Madness and people needed a break.  So, my suggestion is that we allow at least a couple months in-between major contests.  We can't expect our team to run all-out, all of the time.  That is not reasonable or doable and we are overdoing it to have CC run right after any major contest.
  3. CC was not fun this year in any way for me and I'm not bitter, just disappointed that I invested time and money in it as a contest.  I could have been Folding the same amount without CC and would not have missed anything.  When a contest is fun (like the Time Zone Challenge), I get energized by it, look forward each day to seeing how teams are doing, enjoy the chat/banter, etc.  CC held none of that for me this year and I will not blame anyone or EVGA either.  It just wasn't any fun as a contest.  Had there been the least little bit of "contest" in it, I'd of enjoyed it.
  4. Get rid of the Chimp Names plain and simple.  I don't feel any more a part of the team just because I have to take that action.  I know that it works for others that way, but all I see in it are issues that aren't necessary for a great contest.  We don't require it for all the other contests we run and they are indeed fun without the need for all of us to load up into a single user name.  Getting rid of that requirement will solve a lot more issues than it provides in the way of team spirit building.
  5. CC and really any contest like it needs to be well inside the cooler months if we want max Folding for the cause.  I want that and get energized by watching it happen, but can't personally pull that off in May through September.  We must fix this and I would suggest that we do it in either Oct or Jan too.
  6. Lastly, this team has got to drop the nibbling at each other even in common threads and especially in contests.  We are not a team if we nitpick each others every remark or say things that are emotionally charged.  I know that controlling that in forums is like "herding cats", but if each of us can do just a little more each day to be courteous and helpful to each other, it will go a long way to building a healthier team.

OK, one more thing I didn't address. Heck Yes we should participate next year. What, you're going to let the other teams run us off? I don't think so, that is exactly what they want IMO. Set limits, stand our ground and make it fair again next year.
My attitude is... Kick A#$ and don't even bother taking names later. (now that's some smack talk that I can back up) ((don't make me send the squirrel over...))

Personal opinion only!
This was my first CC and I think it was a joke. No blame to the hard working people on this team and others that tried to make a go of it.
I just looked at [H]'s points for the first week of the CC and saw half their usual output. Half! How many went off to other teams? How many came here? I never like people who don't like me. I can respect them but don't have to hang out with them.
I don't see the CC ever being what it once was (a good spirited contest and recruiting tool), so I'd prefer an in house contest to replace it. Our team stat's from these contests are way better than other typical monthly stats.
So I'm probably out for next year but who knows, time does heal some things.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 06:17:05 (permalink)
A couple of ideas that have already been thrown about...
  • I'm still not sure whether chimp names or team names is better for the competition.  Chimps shows camaraderie but increases frustration for new folders and those w/ many clients.  Non-CC folders will always find a way to fold for a CC team, either way.
  • Didn't seem like much movement between teams this year, which led to some blah feelings when watching stats.  Not sure if it's the normalization or scoring system in general.
  • We need better stats pages, with daily numbers that can be tracked in a graph.  Easier to see the fruits of our efforts and at least let teams find something to get behind and cheer for even if their out of the running.
  • Ditto on a shared forum/chat area for all teams to visit and talk some smack & fling some poo.  IRC was available but I couldn't get it to work w/ Firefox the few times I tried, and honestly didn't spend much time trying to figure it out.  This would go a long way towards getting to know other teams and building some common ground.
  • Thanks to EVGA for the stickied threads and banner.  Yes, an email blast would've been nice too but it didn't work out for this year.  Any way to temporarily bypass the multiple PM hurdles when notifying team folders in future CC's would be greatly appreciated.
  • Other teams gripe how with EVGA bucks we're "paid" folders and therefore not really in it for the cause. I browse other forums and see this stigma about us often. I also see some signs of entitlement here where some think EVGA Corp should be giving out more "stuff" during the contests.  Maybe they should suspend the bucks promotion during the CC month (doing away w/ amnesty) and put some of what would have gone towards bucks into some folding prizes.  Or (heaven forbid) do away with bucks promotion altogether.  Other teams seem to do fine without it.
Just my 2 cents...

They are nothing special but I have some IDE drives if you can use them.  No extra sata's right now. Let me know.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 09:40:13 (permalink)
Hey guys,
I just wanted to drop by and give a big applause to Xavier Zepherious for his truly sensible post, and then add a couple of my cents.
I guess to summarize, I'd like to invite all of you to such sensibility. That includes the following:

1) Understand that CC is not about EVGA. It's not supposed to be designed such that EVGA wins. It's supposed to be designed such that all participating teams have a chance to win.

2) It is a contest. That means you need to have rules, a point system, etc. to decide the winner. It does not mean it's all about winning, however no contest is fun if it does not give all participating teams a chance to win. Therefore, the point system needs to be designed as such, and KISS is not always (and in this case, not at all) the right answer. The point system can be complicated. It is OK, as long as it is making it more fair. Can you really argue that a simple "raw points" system, where a two big teams raced, and the others watched, is fair? Really??

3) Try and put yourselves into smaller team's shoes. Why would they even participate with absolutely no chance to win? I'm looking at the current standings and I'm happy to see BGB and CPU where they are. They are small teams but thanks to their efforts in other departments, they're gunning for the 3rd place.

4) Keep analyzing the standings.
a) Why is T32 winning? Because they came together as a team, pushed their production, converted huge amounts of people to chimp name, and recruited others for the CC. They showed incredible growth compared to last year's CC. Don't you think that deserves a nod at the least? The comment above that half of [H] joined them must be a joke, please just look at [H]'s numbers during the competition; there is barely a drop.

b) Why is OCN doing so good? Because again, they came together as a team, pushed their production beyond normal, and converted most of their production to chimp name.

c) Why are MB and CBC doing so bad? They're already at a disadvantage being a small team, but they also did a terrible job growing, plus a terrible job converting their team members. Being small is not an excuse, BGB and CPU is showing how it's done, although they could recruit better and grow better, and that's why they're gunning for only the 3rd spot.

d) Why did EVGA fail to compete for the top spot this year? It's basically because you could not convert sufficient numbers, for the reasons you already know. Any person who kept folding for their name, hurt the team in CC; there's no other way to put it. You also could not produce big numbers, and could not show a significant growth compared to last year. You sure you still wanna blame the points system? Please.

5) The points system can of course be discussed, and what XZ is suggesting (changing the contribution of the categories, such that they're weighed) is very very easy to achieve (just adjust the ranges accordingly; e.g. 100 for points, 80 for growth, 50 for conversion). Discuss a weighing scheme, propose it, and make your case. Don't think other teams are evil, don't forget you're all in the same boat of Folding@Home. I believe a well thought out system can be openly discussed and agreed upon. Just be reasonable; don't forget that the purpose should be to have a point system that gives a chance to all participating teams; not just one, not a few.

I have an idea (can you believe that? ) regarding CC organization, but I'll put it in another post...

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 10:51:14 (permalink)
My voice may not be as big being my first CC, and only been folding for about 1 month, I don't have any previous experiences to compare to. But, a lot of the complaints that I see about this year compared to previous years just don't apply to me (Changes with PG and the points system, CC rules compared to previous years, etc). For those that may trade stocks, the term "buy low, sell high" comes to mind... I bought in at what seems to be a low time in the folding realm of things, so I'm pretty content with how things are.

That being said, and from my perspective, two main areas of focus for next year should be awareness and recruitment. A new folder would most likely have the same mindset about F@H as myself... content with it as a new experience and not really care about whatever happened years ago.  And as far as awareness... there's obviously only so much that can be done with short notice, which I think everyone understands. But I believe that with EVGA fully supporting the CC next year, we'd have a much better turn out. I imagine there's a lot of corporate "hoops" to jump through for an email blast to go out, but with proper notice, that shouldn't be an issue.

Also some incentive, such as EVGA swag (as someone else mentioned). Every PC manufacturer and tech related company that I've worked for had tons and tons of swag that was given away at tech convention booths, etc, and to employees for every little positive thing that any individual did that in the end, benefited the company. I'm sure EVGA has some "tech booth swag" sitting around somewhere. Pens, cups, mugs, beanies, scarfs, keychains, branded flash drives and other tech gear, etc, etc. How many new folders do you guys think would sign up if EVGA ran a banner through Adsense across the web offering a free 2GB EVGA branded flashdrive for something like the first 100 new registrations that are able to contribute for atleast a few days? I'd so rock an EVGA flashdrive :D It would even be in EVGA's best intrest from a marketing perspective... word would spread like wildfire in the "Hey, Check this out" area of info tech/gaming/etc forums across the web. Maybe even here on our forum to some that may not visit the Distributed Computing section. My EVGA Z68 SLI that I bought recently has "#1 Folding Team in the World" on the side of the box... so I'm sure their marketing team would support keeping that on the box in the future by supporting event's such as CC from an advertising point of view.

Lastly, big kudos to XZ for sending out like 1500+ PM's. With my work and schedule, I was only able to PM 100 people, which took me about an hour after getting the hang of the anti spam PM limit timer. The forum's anti-spam system measures make mass PM'ing a time consuming process, so big kudos to XZ and everyone that was able to donate some time for that.

That's all, fold on brothers!(sisters?)

1. there was nothing wrong with the formula.

Well, as AB posted in the rules, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that one.

I don't think we even need to discuss any "formulas" until we figure out how to return the CC back to something more than just a short-term shift in folding resources.

Time to Kill this EVGA bucks, everyone hates us stuff...

All the other teams have "Multiple" team mates that come for the bucks... Then run off and point fingers. Phewy to them...

"Many" other teams give out entire systems and or parts consistently... Again, Phewy to them.

Other teams would sign up in a half of a second if their own folding team offered up to $10 to fold under their flag. Not our problem they have not done that. Seams to me EVGA is more committed to humanity to me than any of the other teams from where I sit... Phewy to them again...

Folks have to "Apply" for the bucks to get them. It is not automatic. I know for a fact that not every producer for EVGA sends in their requests.

The Bucks for other teams is an excuse for their own deficiency or lack of recruiting ability. Every single one of us can find an excuse for any deficiency if we wanted to.

TO hell with their crying. Let's do what we want and crush all their dreams of ever being a better team than us.

Re:Chimp Challenge 2013 Open Discussion... 2012/05/24 13:22:07 (permalink)
I never said it was perfect - Punchy

hence I was for a dual race -before I got sidelined and OCN dragged it back to a category race

the main point I made

team production is down 33% from march
then to only convert - only 40% of the team shows up...well math proves a point
9 M PPD is all we could eke out out of a max out put of 27/28M

we are doing 20MPPD and only get 9M?? WTH

OCN is doing 16M PPD and they get 12-13M out for their chimp team
overclockers are doing 12M and get 10M out for their chimp team

we got our butts kicked it's that simple

this is about getting the team out and growing it
we failed on multiple fronts

1. we failed to get the message out (as team leaders and as a team we all individually could have done more to get the message out)

2. some failed to get connected to the site and keep up on current activities of the team (news). not interested or fed up - lack of spirit or fun in coming to forums

3. some block pm's
4. some are more interested in folding for our own points(those that would rather pass those folding on the chimp) rather than for the team or science
5. we failed to get EVGA onboard or interested enough to help support us more

6. we come up with excuses as to why we can't at least meet last years numbers

come on guys we are going downhill ..its that simple
we got complacent - lazy or uninterested or fed up or some other reason we are not folding.

7. we lost folders from our last internal contest due to infighting
rather than looking at the reasons of why we do it and leave the hot heads and remarks at the door.

To hell with personal points do it for the team and for cures.  Don't worry about others on the team worry about your rigs and how to get more out of them or grow your farm

this is one of the reasons the team has lost spirit
-we are tired , weery of the fighting and excuses
just find some love for folding again please

I don't care if we go back to the chimp next year
the main issue is we need to rebuild our spirit. quit dog-legging ourselves, and plan out how we improve our team output in the coming year.

it be useless if we go in with the same energy and conversion we did this year.
if we go by current pattern(60 to 40 to ?) - lets drop our conversion to 20% next year?

furthermore any solutions would also help keep [H] at bay

sort of the funk [H] went thru
