Ive never posted my own question on why we fold. After reading  previous posts and adding my own reply I always came away feeling inspired and reasured my efforts are worthy. The Ones That Fold Due To Immediate heath issues with loved ones or past terminally Ill loved ones, Inspire Me to make use of my stuff for medical research. I am humbled By the Many people who Grieve and Fold at the same time.
My personal Reasons Remain The Same, I simply couldnt find a more challenging , worthy , way to put my resources to work for than biological research.
Please sign on with another hands up for team folding and folding for the most productive team in the world.

I use to run SETI@HOME but when Stanford started FOLDING@HOME I thought it was a more productive use of my PC resources and decided to fold and I now fold 24/7 instead of just when my screen saver kicked in.  Sometimes I wonder if all these PC's running FOLDING@HOME are the best use of all that power consumption/money but I truely do believe the research Stanford is doing will go a long way toward finding a cure for many diseases.  I have recently lost a close friend due to cancer.  I grieve.  I fold.  I hope to help to make a difference.

I fold because I can, since my computer wastes time by just sitting there.

I fold for my great grandma who died last weekend, she was buried this Monday.  She had Alzheimer's and her life was no fun for her at the end.  I've been folding much longer than that though, I fold because I hate to see my PC go to waste when I'm not using it and it's also real fun to see my points go up and to watch the WU's be completed in fahmon.

I don't fold a lot, but I still fold. I go in spurts as I'm able. I can't always be around to babysit my computer due to health issues of my own that keep me away from home for sometimes extended periods of time. I guess that doesn't really answer why I fold though, just my folding routine.

I fold because my grandfather died of alzheimers, my cousin of leukemia, my aunt of cancer, my late wife of cancer, my best friend of cancer. Although the folding cannot help them, as they are already gone, and most likely will never help others or myself in this lifetime, I still have a hope that the effort and research done today can help people of tomorrow from having to experience as many problems and heartaches as in the present.

I have personally taken care of 3 immediate family members from diagnosis of Cancer to Hospice and to burial.

I am taking care of my dad at the moment that is in the early stages of Alzheimers/dementia.

I know they may not find a cure in my lifetime, but I could not live with myself if I thought I couldn' t at least not try to do something in the

advancement of knowledge and research towards a cure for either.

plus I am addicted now and must feed my nasty $500 a month electrical habit......

    Fold On!

Well my systems use to run idle all the time just doing simple tasks overnight, so I figured why not put them to good use and help others in the process. Plus like I said in another thread, I had family members that have died of cancer in the past and I fold in honor of them.

I fold for all those whose second x-ray isn't clear, who find a lump where there shouldn't be one.  I fold for uncle Roger who died from cancer and for uncle David who doesn't know who he is.

I fold because I am lucky to be a one eyed, left handed, color blind guy with addison's disease who lives in a country where I have the freedom to fold.   I am fortunate enough to have the ability to help someone else, and I pray every day that the folding I do will help a doctor be able to say "Yes you do have cancer,  but we have a cure and you are going to be fine".

I fold for my grandmother who passed away just over two weeks ago. So that nobody else will have to lose mobility entirely and forget what happened last week, I'm just grateful she remembered who everyone was right to the end.

I fold for my Grandfather, Kay who was taken by cancer in 1984.  He was a big part of my childhood and helped make me the person I am today.

For my aunt Suzie, who was like a mother to me,  taken by cancer when she was only in her 50's.  She was like a mother to me, and the values she passed on to me are still with me today.

For my cousin Julie who was taken by cancer and was about the age I am now when she passed.  She never gave up, and fought for her life with never a thought of quitting.  It was as if I lost a sister when I lost her.

For my grandmother Eleanor, taken a few years ago by cancer.   She always showed me right from wrong, and the value of hard work.

Every family member of mine who has passed, has been taken by cancer.  I fold for them, and everyone else stricken by this wretched disease.

I fold because it feels good to be part of the largest supercomputer network in the world. Since I leave my computer on 24/7 (hosting a private Microsoft Exchange server), why not put the other parts to work as well when they're just sitting there idle?

I fold mostly to give my computer something to do. It also seems like a worthy cause. Two of my grandparents died of cancer, one from breast cancer and the other from colon cancer. My remaining grandpa was diagnosed with Alzheimer almost 10 years ago but his symptoms haven't worsened at all so it we don't really know (he's pretty darn with it for a 96 year old guy). Some day I would like to be able to say that my computer cured cancer (or helped anyways). Nice to know that my computer hobby can actually help do some good for everyone.

I fold because it gives me a reason to buy lots of computer parts and write them off at tax time. I'm obsessed with building computers. And if all this prevents someone from dying someday, all the better.

My wife and I have been going to the same tax preparer for a few years now, I told her about folding and that I run my computers 24/7 most of the year doing this and she said we could write off the hardware I buy as a charitable donation. This will be the 3rd year I take in my receipts :)

I built this system and was left with a feeling like all that hardware should be doing more for me than a few hours of gaming a day.   After coming here for some input on some problems I was having with the rig, I got curious what all these "folding" points were in everybodies signatures..

I do think of many current and passed family members.  Alzheimers, Cancer have been fairly common in the family.  I do think of my future self eventually getting one of these diseases and so part of it is hoping the effort now might actually help me or someone else close to me in my lifetime.

The points and stats are also fun to watch the progress and be a part of a top folding team.  I've been running this less than a week and have almost 50k points.  I didn't even know about the EVGA program and the stuff the sometimes give out to the folding team when I started.  That's pretty nice incentive too and I sure hope they continue it next year so I can participate in that as well.

I know my system doesn't really match up to the points a lot of you put up, but I'll contribute what I can with the hardware and budget available to me.  Still reading through stuff and looking into maybe getting the SMP client going soon here.  All the different options are a lot to absorb.

I started folding and crunching back on my old E2200 because I wanted it to do something productive while I did other work, DLed files, or browsed the web. Then I got hooked. Since I have a PS3 to game on my Rigs became dedicated Folder/Crunchers besides the occasional Torchlight session... :)

Well you can claim anything you want.  Just that if you get audited you may lose the deduction.  For most things you need to be able to substantiate the "time of use" that the equipment is going to use for say, a home business.  In the case of charity like this, it's a grey area.  Usually donating equipment means physically giving it to the charity.  If you also use the equipment yourself some percentage of the time, that portion is definitely not deductible.

If it were a slam dunk deduction, it would probably be mentioned somewhere on the folding at home site as this would no doubt give them an exponential lift in participation.

Probably should hav ea forum moderator put these posts in a new thread.  We're getting pretty far off topic.

    I apologize for the derailment.

I Fold because I have lost relatives and friends to Alzheimer's and cancer.   Also my Mother and Step-Mother both are Breast Cancer survivors.   I want to see these eradicated in my lifetime!

Also I enjoy arguing with my wife over the power bill!
