OK, so I posted in the Christmas thread that I was down for the count on my main cruncher.  It's pretty much the end for that Windows 7 install and I know how to proceed on that front.  The issue is, how do I migrate all of my 'tasks in progress' from the old drive (in this case the saved windows.old directory) to the new setup?  Where are the files stored?  Can they just be moved?  Since I'm at work there isn't much time to research and I still have to rebuild the Windows 7 environment tonight.  Would like to expedite getting my clients back up and running.

Found this at the help page.  Pretty much what happened to me, but there's no explanation on restore process.  I presume it must mean I just start the units over and it remembers my queue?

You'll need to move Boinc's data directory which could be found in a few places depending on your OS and Boinc version.  I'll try to post URLs which describe the process, but since I'm a noob, this may not work so well.    In the forum I'm going to try to refer you to, you'll want to dig into the "Backup and Restore" and "Running the Model" posts.  All the info you need is in those.

This is what I was looking for, many thanks!

Per this LINK, the folder is C:\ProgramData\BOINC\

and the whole process is all too simple, outlined HERE.  Will try this when I get Windows going after work.

Got everything installed.  Updates take a while.  Ugh.

Data migration worked on first try, minutes after Windows Install was completed.  Thanks again Col323!

EDIT: Well BOINC just reported all tasks "Aborted by Project" and I now have all new ones... guess they didn't like that.

Bugger.  Sorry to hear that.  If possible, can you go to your result status page under My Grid, find an Aborted unit, and check the log for it?  You should be able to click the "Aborted" hyperlink under the Status column.  And you can filter by status to help find one.  I'm just curious to see what the client thinks went wrong.  If you followed those steps, it should have worked.  Perhaps there's a message in the log which will give a clue why they aborted.

While the units not completed, or unstarted say "Detached" with blank log... two units say "error" with the following logs:

Re:Crunchy Migration 2011/12/15 19:38:36 (permalink)
Nothing too exciting there, just that we're missing input for computation, so it makes sense that it dumped those.  If you restored your folder prior to installing Boinc, did it ask you to attach to a project?  That's a warning sign that the migration didn't take.  (In that case, don't attach, uninstall, and reinstall making sure the path is exactly the same.)  If you got beyond that point fine, another option is to disable network access.  That way if Boinc finds something wrong, it won't immediately call home.

Regardless, I'm glad you're back crunching.  I'm really sorry for the loss of units - I have this sick obsession with crunching everything that is thrown at me, and I suppose I project that onto everybody else.    The good news is, those units will be adopted and find good homes in other warm processors.

Your ribbon is well-deserved... because I didn't have to redo my settings

Unfortunately I installed, let it make a directory, attached, immediately set to not get new work, then closed, erased files and injected the old ones.  Followed the guide:
__________________________
To restore a backup.

1) Stop BOINC as above.
2) Click on the BOINC (data) folder with Windows Explorer.
3) In (menu)Edit, click on Select All.
4) In (menu)File, click on Delete.

5) Locate the desired backup folder.
6) Open this folder.
7) In (menu)Edit, click on Select All.
8 ) In (menu)Edit, click on Copy.
9) Move to the location of the now empty BOINC (data) folder.
10) In (menu)Edit, click on Paste.

I'm very glad to hear the units aren't lost...whew, I stress about that.

Egads, man!  It's too bad I don't have a video of my reaction to your post loading.   I saw the quote of my post, but the image didn't load right away.  It basically gave me enough to to think, "I wonder what this image will be?"  Then it popped in.  I was not prepared.

Cheers, guys!  You have a great team comprised of some fun people.
