  • Use a CD Burning software to burn the .iso image onto a blank CD (Nero, Alochol 120%, MagicISO etc.)
  • After it has burned, insert CD and restart the machine, go into the BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
  • Now set the CD Drive as the primary boot device, or press escape while the system is booting to select CD as the bootable device.
  • After flash remove the CD, and power off PC Completely.
  • Turn on the PC and load defaults in BIOS

USB FLOPPY Installation - Recommended installation method
  • Download the following executable: E758_43.exe
  • Insert blank floppy disk into drive and run executable
  • After the floppy has written fully, restart the machine, go into the BIOS and load defaults, save and exit
  • Now set the USB Floppy as the primary boot device, or press escape while the system is booting to select USB Floppy as the bootable device
  • After flash remove the floppy, power off PC Completely
  • Turn on the PC and load defaults in BIOS

USB Flash Drive Installation - Alternate installation method

Darn - I was hoping for a BIOS that stopped the dreaded double/triple pump at boot that makes my system take longer to boot to Windows than my wifes 4+ year old AMD system (and old laptop too).  Not to mention the issues with the S3 sleep that would make booting faster if I could use sleep reliably.

This is the bios for Gulftown 980x. If you have rev 1.1 you should not be experiencing S3 sleep issue. I put my computer to sleep in S3 and never had a single problem. Not going to update the bios since this does not apply to me.

Enabled - but thats so I can run 64 bit VM's.

I have stayed away from sleep because it somethings will come out of sleep and just lock up after a while.

I wish they would address the long boot process since it kind of negates the fast boot I get with my SSD's.  But despite this I really love this mobo.

If you have Virtualization in the bios enable it will double boot, that's a feather and it's normal.

Not in my case.  I have it disabled now and I can shut my machine off, power it up, and watch it power up for 2 seconds, watch the lights flash, hear the the system cycle down for a partial second, then power up for 2 seconds, watch the lights flash, hear the the system cycle down for a partial second, then power up and finally start to boot.  Its always been like that - to include with the BIOS it came with and the one to which I updated last March/April.

I posted about this when I first got the board and someone posted that this was normal.  Could this be due to my O/C'ing or something?

CXE also causes this. if you disable that your double pump should go away.

now my funny Bios issue that has survived through several Bios flashes is a happy face that appears when i change my PWM options.. i have flashed my bios 3 times since it firsted showed up and it wont go away :P

But why is CXE enable from the start then?

CxE a power saving feature. and i guess since most everyday users want there system to use less power its defalted to Enabled.
same reason Speedstep is defalted to Enabled on a lot of boards.

In simple words it increases your cpu multiplier by one value. Example stock multiplier is 20 with turbo enable you will have 21 when you are in windows and open up cpuz you can see this.

    Case: Cool Master HAF 932
    Board: EVGA X58 E758 rev1.1

This is clear, but is it only for the new 32nm processors, because every BIOS has this turbo mode at the moment?

thats what turbo mdoe does by default and its always done that with EVGA boards read my post in this thread, its number 6.

    http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?m=120699

If you want to see what a more likely explanation for Turbo performance" (your not far, it is to do with Turbo mode and multiplier but not the 1x bin multis like the 920's 21x multi, there are also 2x bin multis but they have stricter rules that need to be met in order for it to kick in, seems this "tweak" allows that to happen more frequently.  a bin is an additional +1 to the multiplier)

to check this out open eleet, for the 920 you should see a 22x multi pop up more often but it will still drop back to 21x.  For the 965 this is a 26x multi which i am seeing alot more with "Turbo Performance" Enabled.

Enabled - but thats so I can run 64 bit VM's.

IIRC, back in the old days, VT was only required when running a 64 bit client on a 32 bit host OS.  Is it required in later VM software for a 64 bit client?  Or maybe for best performance regardless of "bitness"?

    Z.

I'm not at all an expert on this subject, but in my limited experience, it appears that VT is required in order to use more than one core in a virtual machine.  Maybe there is another way around the issue, but in my experience, I could not enable more than one and up to 8 cores without enabling virtualization technology.

VT is required to allow 64bit VMs to run, and allow VMs to utilize additional processor capabilities like SMP, multicore, etc i believe.

I'm running 196 QPI with 20x multi,  with both Turbo and this new 'Turbo Performance' mode enabled, e-Leet reports Core 1 as 22x, and the other three cores as 21x in the 'Overclocking' tab... so does that mean that Core #1 is running at 4.3GHz and the other cores run at 4.1GHz? e-Leet just reports 4.1GHz like normal for the overall 'Core Speed'.

It will depend, do you have CxE Function enabled and are you using Windows 7?

There is no guarantee that you will see the 22x multi at all (why EVGA probably states that you may see a performance increase), when it does kick in though Core 0 (referred to as Core 1 in Turbo Mode section of eleet) will run with a 22x multi.  If you sit and look at eleet you may should be able to see when it kicks in, i am seeing my 26x multi (which is the 965 equivalent of the 920 22x multi) alot more frequently with Turbo performance enabled (this is running my system at stock though with CxE Function set to C6 and SpeedStep enabled, this multiplier has strict criteria when it can become active) alot more, infact it kicks in every fre seconds from when it disables and when it does become active it stays alot longer than it used to before.  Before this BIOS or with Turbo  Performance disabled the 26x multi on my 965 is a very very rare occurrence, with this new BIOS and Turbo performance enabled its pretty much taken over (on Core 0, also shown as core 1) from the 25x multiplier, the base multiplier for the 965 is 24x.

CXE also causes this. if you disable that your double pump should go away.
     ...

Actually I do have CxE disabled - and I have speedstep disabled too.   Hmmmmm....

CxE does not cause the double pump - I have it enabled along with speedstep, and do not exerience the double pump, the only time I get it is when I shut off power completely to the system, or change something like ram timings in the bios. I shut down and power up every day and do not get the double pump as a general rule.

Disabling Virtualization in the bios, which by default is enabled, will help get rid of some of this. Only reason you would need VT enabled is if you want to run a virtual OS, like say Windows XP mode on Windows 7.

This is the bios for Gulftown 980x. If you have rev 1.1 you should not be experiencing S3 sleep issue. I put my computer to sleep in S3 and never had a single problem. Not going to update the bios since this does not apply to me.

I think perhaps the rev 1.1 board fixed sleep in some instances, but certainly not all. There are still several folks that cannot get a functional S3 sleep mode on their rev 1.1 758 boards, including myself. Might work 3 or 4 times, then crash upon resume, either frozen mouse or bsod.
I have tested extensively on my board both at stock clocks and at my current overclock. I won't be trying S3 sleep mode again anytime soon, unless I see a bios update that states further improvements to S3 sleep were included in the bios udpate.

I have rev 1.1 board and it fails to resume from S3 on 3rd attempt if I overclock the system. If vcore is set to Auto and lower overclock is used, it can resume 5 times. On sixth time, the VREG becomes obscenely HOT and the only thing you can do is to reset the box.

So, no, S3 resume doesn't work on rev 1.1 board.

I was so hoping that a new BIOS will fix S3 but EVGA has other plans. A new BIOS comes out, still no signs of fixing S3, and we are left with more wait....

Yes, that has happened to me as well - the vreg geting hot on a resume when it did work a time or two...

Sad to think it worked so well on the 780i and 680i boards with Vista and XP!

Its a shame that we don't even get an acknowledgement from Evga on the S3 issue. Its so easy to reproduce! Just OC to > 195 BCLK with manual vcore and try to resume from S3 multiple times.

My experience with Evga is really sucking at this time. I don't seem to be able to get rid of the huge fan noise on my 9600GT either.

If I am not overclocking > 195 BCLK is S3 safe without hassles?

Sometimes fans run all the time and are loud because an air path is plugged with dust.  Have you checked that?
