My SR2 has an SPDIF header, alongside the normal audio header. But the mobo did not come with an adapter, and I have hunted high and low, not hits so far. Do you know of any? What I want is just a bracket that I can put in one of the slots, with an RCA connector. No optical connector, no coax, just an RCA. The header on the MOBO has two (correct me if I am wrong) connectors. I could make my own, but better just buy one. Do you happen to know what brand is making things like this? And while I am at it, it is a pity EVGA did not supply it with the mobo.. Ingvar

SPDIF is digital only, you would need a device to decode the signal and has outputs for RCA, sounds like you just need a sound card in that case. Generally the SPDIF port on the motherboards is to feed into GPU's that don't have the audio built into them to pass through HDMI like the older 9000 series cards, i'm not sure about newer generations though.

What moose said is correct. The SPDIF header was intended for use with graphics cards. Cards prior to the 400 series needed this cable attached for HDMI sound. If you really want to use another connector besides the 3.5mm, you will have to consider buying a sound card.

moose517 SPDIF is digital only, you would need a device to decode the signal and has outputs for RCA, sounds like you just need a sound card in that case. Who has said I have not? :) I have this: http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/828mk3 I use my EVGA Classified SR2 for professional multi media. I have dual xeon 5680, so it it probably the most powerful multi media PC around. But there are conflicts with for example Cakewalk Sonar and "ordinary" applications, like the Windows Media player or simply using the browser to play back online sound. Because I like to work with a sample rate of 88 200 / 24 bit, and normally the Windows setup is 44 100 / 16. I assume that I can solve this by directing Windows sound to the Realtek SPDIF output. I can the connect the MOTU SPDIF input to this output, and get he best of these two worlds. There are directions for assembling your own, like this: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=997533 But if I can just order one in an Internet shop, I would save time, even if I have knowledge and tools for making my own. So, to reiterate my initial question: Does anybody know of a ready made SPDIF adapter with RCA output, to plug in an ordinary RCA (phono) plug? Ingvar

Ive listening to my processors.. mouse laser and a bevy of other sounds because I hacked together an unshielded analog audio cable to get quick sound.

This is what I am after, and I have googled too, but all I find is on eBay and Amazon and that is ok, but I live in Norway and had hoped this item was available here. Well, I have to oreder from over the pond, it seems. Anyhow, I see no reason to use an optical cable, so all I need is actuall just a connection fronm the two SPDIF pins on the mobo, to a RCA connector. That's it. I am temted to make my own, now. Hi lollygag, I don't get your picture right.. According to the table printed on the PCB, ground is on one of the sides, but it looks like you have put it in the middle. And what is "left" here? Ingvar

Im just stoked the OP's P got me to look closer and now I dont need to go buy an X-Fi just to get a single digital out for audio.. It sounds great.. it spits out a 24bit 192000hz studio quality signal and passes dolby prologic through to my surround reciever

>feel like an idiot Don't! I appreciate any help, regardless :) I will post a follow-up as soon as I have solved this (as soon as I have more experiences with it) From this thread: http://forums.evga.com/tm.aspx?high=&m=765967&mpage=1#765967 "It's somewhat interesting that EVGA doesn't make a backplate S/PDIF bracket, but the demand probably isn't there." EVGA would probably benefit from marketing this mobo to the multi media market too, much more than now. We, who edit sound, make sound/music and especially work with video and 3D apps (Carrara, Cinema 4D) - we sit all day long and watch gauges crawl along at snail speed. I had a job where the render process alone took 5 hours on an Intel quad core! Loading the same project into my new PC with the SR2, it takes 14 minutes :) Luckily, Adobe After Effects 64 bit, and daz3D Carrara, use all 24 cores fully. Other applications lag behing. But some, like the eminent Video NLE Sony Vegas, can be run as multiple instances, dividing the job, to take full advantage of all 24 cores. I built this computer to get things done, working with multi media. And it is another world, I am now maybe 3-5 years ahead of the pack. Ingvar

Actually I thought I read that here.. but maybe I dreamt it because the fact that mine works coax rca out.. and that plate has the toslink adapter coax to optical converter and its a standardized unproprietary format I'd guess its gonna work. I think I did read that in another thread here.. a guy couldnt get the optical to work which is why I never messed with mine until you posted this thread.. and now obviously it works. Maybe somthing changed in the newer bios.

lollygag .. and now obviously it works. Maybe somthing changed in the newer bios.
I don't think it is like this, but I am not sure. But this is how I assume it works: The SPDIF output is digital TTL technology. That means, plus 5 Volt for digital 1, and 0 Volt for digital 0. This way, a chain of 1s and 0s come from the pin on the SPDIF header on the SR2 PCB, and you can then connect a cable to any device that accepts SPDIF input, i.e. accepts a chain of 1s and 0s which is 5 Volt and 0 Volt respectively. When it comes to the optical connection, I think it is very simple. As LED is turned on and off, corresponding to 1s and 0s in the digital chain. You just have to supply the LED with power, and a simple digital switch, which is governed by the SPDIF digital. The power needed for the LED is taken from the third pin on the SR2 PCB, which is 5V. But it could as well have been taken from a battery or any external power source. My point here, to sum it up, is that there is no advanced logic behind this at all. And the BIOS is definitely not involved. I only assume, but I think it has to be like this. If this is correct, it just has to work, as simple as that. Ingvar

This is what I ordered 2 months ago... http://www.amazon.com/Gig...-TOSLINK/dp/B003E7HS24 Seems to do an OK job but you have to remember that its only 2 channel.. Never tested input.. I opted for an ASUS DX card. Just noticed IMX-Master posted about the same addon..

Hi everybody! here is an update. I ordered this: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Gigabyte-Motherboard-S-PDIF-RCA-Out-Plate-Cable-Bracket-/230381728199 For $9 I have a completely new world for my multi media PC. It worked immediately, just plugged it in, and connected it to my MOTU breakout box. It worked as expected!!! Having struggled almost one day with bit rates and settings, I finally had everything working fine. For some reason, my system, the MOTU, has problems with 96 kHz 24 bit, but 88.2 kHz 24 bit works just great. Hooray! :) Ingvar

I will try to explain again why this is so fantastic. If you work with multimedia, and especially sound, the application in question will command the MOTU (or any other box) to use certain sample rates and bit rates. The standard 44.1 kHz 16 bit is fine for final results, but if you have stuff you want to process using effects, you most likely want a higher resolution. When working with the DAW Cakewalk Sonar, I use 88.2 kHz 24 bit. This is fine as long as only Sonar is on. But what if I want to add a sound to the mix, that I find on the Internet? Windows works with 44.1 and a conflict occurs. Either Internet is silent, or Sonar is silent, and you get a lot of nasty error messages and sometimes I even had to reboot my computer. Using the S/PDIF, I can have Windows use the onboard Realtek audio device. And then send this sound out in a digital format to the MOTU box, and use the built in mixer in the MOTU to mix everything together. So now I can work at high resoultion in Sonar, and at the same time listen to YouTube, download sound clips, mix and match, no problems anymore. This little device I bought changed everything! Pity it did not come with the SR2 mobo, but maybe few will use it like this. Ingvar

Ok I see...you're using the internal DAC and bringing its output into the main mix. We have 896's that have SPDIF inputs but never thought about using it directly. With coax the only thing I would be concerned with is possible ground loops or voltage differentials causing (SPDIF) link dropouts.
