Ok, my brother is able to get some more money together, and we want to know which would be better, a core i3 2100 or a core i3 550..

get the i3 2100, it's that bit better and will be able to use sandybridge motherboards

With the i3 2100 you will not be able to overclock it at all though.

I don't mind the overclocking part, cuz I need something rock solid, and has a warranty in case it breaks while i'm at college...

The Sandy Bridge chips can do up to 4Ghz range on the stock cooler, but unfortunately can only be done on on the 2500k and 2600K, the i3 2100 is completely locked to stock frequency http://www.anandtech.com/...-core-i3-2100-tested/3
